How to fill small space near window

Hi all.

I have a wall run of 120" x 2 sides of a 10x12 kitchen

The main wall w/appliances: approx 33"fridge/15"base/24"DW/36"sink base

Perpendicular to this wall is a wall with 2 windows on it. The windows are different heights, one of them is a fire escape.

This wall : window range window

The opposite wall facing fridge: 28" base/(steam pipe)wine fridge/24"base, next to this base is the fire escape window. I cannot put a cabinet there so I'm putting 10"D shelving. 2 towers will sit on top of the bases with open shelving between the towers.

My original counter extended a few inches across one of the windows. I am leaving approx.12" inches from the window wall to allow space for the deep windowsill and outside window frame molding.

What is a good solution to fill that space(14"D 12"W after the sink base ends? I plan on extending the counter to the wall, I installed an outlet for toaster/electric kettle, so whatever I put there must support the counter.

The cabinets have no toe kicks , they are on legs, which I like since toe kicks get grimy/wet if there's water accidents. AND since I just put down an (expensive IMO) Italian porcelain floor I want to see my tiles !!!

I am having difficulty tracking down the cabinet manufacturer so buying a piece is not an option. I bought 15" base, 24" base, 28" base, 36" sink base, 2 glass towers, 1 glass 1 solid upper. They are maple (glazed)fronts,3/4" birch ply, dovetail, all base have pull shelves and one has pull out counter. The construction and insides(pull out shelves and deep drawers(what a LUXURY)is what convinced me to buy them. I paid $1000 for them SO I can now get my LARGE Franke professional SS sink/soap dispenser/water filter and satin nickel pull out faucet :). My sink is my workhorse.

Is my only solution hiring a carpenter to make a simple open cabinet with one shelf ?

I have a photo on my computer that shows similar cabinets but I don't have an account for any photo posting svc., so I can't post :(

My kitchen layout is forcing me to be creative...I like that.

Hope layout clear...Tile installer, it is Grout day :( left 'bout 40min ago haven't had hardly any food in days just Pastisio last night :)

Read the "New to Kitchens..." to learn many things including how to post pictures. I need visuals. For me its very laboring to read descriptions and dimensions to determine the shape of things, unless of course its prose. Pictures always help me. Though I am no expert by any means.

I was smiling about your user name, and then I discovered that you signed up on Halloween. Now I'm really tickled! Did you see the post recently about what people put in their kids' lunch boxes? Incredible amounts of Real Food, and *nobody* admitted to ever putting in a Twinkie.

As for photos: there are several free, easy to use places to store your photos. I chose Photobucket and it took me about 5 minutes. Flickr is another possibility. I know there are others. Like Enduring, I do better with pictures. If you don't get it figured out pretty quick, post again and I'll post the streamlined directions for photos.

Sherry, The clematis is about 4' from the base of the rose. The space between the shed and trellis is only about 2' to 2.5. The clematis is about halfway between the shed and trellis. Although, the plot is part of a larger bed, the area I'm referring to is about 10'x2' smaller than what looks like in your photo. I wouldn't worry about the shade. I'm far from an expert on clematis, i've killed a few PS is my only true success, but convential wisdom is the roots like to be in shade; the vine likes the sun, but eventually the vine will find sun. One of my vines gets very little sun at it's base. Polish Spirit is a heavy bloomer but is not for a normal shrub because it get's very large. I made that mistake and the reason I have 2 is that it split when I moved it. I wouldn't plant PS any closer than 3' from the base of the rose. I'd be inclined to try one at one end of your arbor like near where the liriope is now. PS is dark purple, it may look nice with the pink. If it doesn't work you can always remove like it did. Moving it for me was a little difficult because it was only about 1' foot from the original rose, but the vine itself reestablished without much ado. I think the risk is rather small. Other rose plantings I've successfully tried: I have two ferns (a japanese painted and an autumn fern) a couple feet near another large rose (Traviata) in filtered sun. Both seem to be happy, happier than alot of others under more conventional conditions. In another bed I have hardy plumbago growing around 2 azaleas, The Dark Lady, and Queen Elizabeth. The shrubs are all healthy and seem unaffected by the plumbago. Plumbago has a pretty loose root structure and I don't think either of the ferns I mentioned are particularly aggressive.

Great set of photos, thanks! Makes it far easier if there is a good set of photos to base the discussion on. First thing I would do would be to move the sand cherries into another bed before they get any more settled in. When they grow up they will block the view to the front door. Something with similar deep purple foliage but with less height would be one of the smaller deep purple Weigela. Hopefully someone can weight in with one that they like. If you want something for focus, perhaps a bird bath, piece of artwork, or a fountain would work there. I would probably remove the shrub that is partially in front of the left side of your big window and just leave the ones on the corner. I think it just looks a little awkward with just one side of the window covered. I also might limb up the right side of the tree a bit, just where the branches reach down in front of the house and door. Having good sight lines to your front door makes the house look welcoming. It is a bit difficult to tell, but the white flowered shrub near the end of the drive looks like one of the weedy honeysuckles (Lonicera). I would post both that photo and a closeup of the leaves and flowers on the Name that Plant forum, and if it is, remove it. It will seed all over courtesy of birds eating the berries. I think the rock wall along the drive is really nice looking as is the brick walk (though the walk looks a bit narrow for two to walk abreast.) However, I think that the issue of what's bothering you about the planting is less about specific plants and more about the relationships ( or lack of) between the plants. Right now the bed behind the rock wall along the drive is only really deep enough for one plant, leaving you with pretty much a single file line of plants. I would make the bed 2 or 3 times as deep so that you have room for more than the single row of plants. A deeper bed will make a much more interesting tapestry along the drive. I'd keep most of those plants relatively low, though they can be a bit taller further from the drive. You want to mostly have perennials rather than shrubs right at the top of the wall so that they won't be damaged by snow and snow removal, and also so branches reaching out don't damage cars using the drive. Think about repetition along the driveway bed, either of color or textures or specific plants. Not simple alternating 1 -3 plants, but a more flowing mix. To see some examples of that, get from the library or a book store one or both of Tracy DiSabato- Aust's books, The Well-Designed Mixed Garden: Building Beds and Borders with Trees, Shrubs, Perennials, Annuals, and Bulbs or The Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting and Pruning Techniques. You will get help on planning to get a nice rhythm going on up the garden along the drive, and can work on interesting foliage along with flowers to create a long season of interest. You may find inspiration from Fine Gardening magazine's website as well. Here's an example of designing a long border like yours "A Strategy for a Long Border" and another one showing some great examples of repetition as you look down the borders in this set of photos (use the arrows to see additional photos.)

Just a note about closed versus open storage: 1. Closed storage lets you put more stuff in. Closed storage is great if items are NOT always picked up. A nice mix of closed and open storage might be 20% open (for decorative items) and 80% closed. 2. Open storage means it always has to be neat and spotless - great if items ARE always picked up. May be best for decorative items or books.

Sorry I didn't post the other areas....here they are. The hutch/china cabinet were separated for the move. I looked and looked for a tv credenza but didn't find any I thought would go. Then I saw on Pinterest how people took old china cabinet tops and put them on legs so did this until I find a credenza I like. We bought this set in 1981 when we got married...it is solid and better made than what I could buy today so decided to keep it. We redid the handles...it originally had teeny gold handles. Oh, sorry for junk on DR table....am about to make chair covers. LR furniture/art/rug will be replaced in a few years....not crazy about the charcoal sofa/chairs anymore but living with it for now. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Thanks suzannes1: I will look into those photo posting sites. I know this will sound far out but I need to find a friend who has the wires to hook up my camera to my (borrowed) Mac. I have a camera but left the cord/instructions in Ireland on my last trip(2009). We were supposed to go back sooner but started reno then my sweetheart had to work alot(I guess to pay for the sink)... My husband is supposed to remember to it bring back...I am the GC/project manager on the kitchen. This is because I wear Red Wing work boots. You really can walk on any debris with those on ! He wants it done by 20 Nov. when he returns. HA ! I told him change his ticket...stay another 2 weeks(he's booked for 3 wks right now)

Hi hlove: I LOVE GREEK FOOD. Pastisio is my favorite along with okra/onions/potatoes cooked in olive oil and tomatoes, lemon potatoes, roasted chicken marinated in pepperocini, lemon and Greek oregano, OH DID I MENTION Horitopita, Creatopita and Spanikopita !!! How about gigantes beans baked in tomato sauce with lots of garlic/oregano ? I always cook(Italian/Greek/Chinese/Indian style)but alas stove is unhooked since I just completed having the floor tiled. I told my friend that no one cared about me so he took me to dinner :) Hopefully tomorrow my friends can remove the part of the gas pipe that is old(20+yrs)so new gas hose can be hooked up. Better happen fast because I just ran out of cat food, I cook her food and freeze it. Her Royal Highness doesn't like takeaway...it must be fresh from butcher !
Didn't realize it was Halloween when I posted because all days are blurring together...could be the reno (we gutted the apt. last fall)or could be the Guinness...

(1) Most recent macs have a camera built in. Look for an application called Photobooth that runs it.

thanks AngieDIY: HA HA . I forgot about that camera...even though I've been talking to my sweetheart over Skype all week.(I hate the term husband, sounds like we're married :)People assume that our friend who's doing the electric/plumbing/sheetrock/carpentry etc is my husband so all are confused...seems like he lives here since this job started. Can't wait to post a photo, maybe someone can identify these cabinets.
