What is the distance between the countertop and the bottom of the fixture?

The fixture should be 32" above 36" countertop above the island if we hang it 27" below the ceiling. Would that be OK?

Is that cardboard on the floor to scale?

I would guess that the fixtures you picked would look fine in that space. Are you set on two small ones rather than one larger one?

My peninsula ended up about 47" wide and 51" long. I had our sparky rough-in two pendants over the area when the plan was for a slightly longer peninsula. The rough-ins (I haven't yet picked a pendant) are 20" apart on center. The one closest to the fridge wall is about 16" away, and the one at the end of the peninsula is about 15" from the end. The max fixture width I can do is 8". All of this is to say that my area is small and I feel like I'm squeezing two fixtures in. I don't have the ceiling height to pull off one larger fixture so maybe it's OK. Sorry, I'm rambling. Just want to make sure you considered one vs. two. :)

breezygirl, yes, it is to the scale (exact sizes, the paper mock of the square light and the cardboard 52" x 36"). I did think of one vs two lights and came to the same "problem" that my ceiling is just 1" short of 8' so big ones I liked were too long. Another thing was that this island light was going to be the "main" light despite recessed lights around the kitchen since my kids will be doing their homework and etc while I cook. So looking for a one light fixture that would either have more than one bulb or one bulb birhter than multi bulbs has been somewhat of a challenge.

Now... It may be too bright with 4 bulbs in each of this light fixture but I am somewhat of a light freak so I rather have more than not...

breezygirl, I do have a question for your pennisula light. A bit confused... My island's length is very similar to yours. According to my calculation, my lights will be 13" from either end then have 26" in the middle to have them evenly spaced. Your lights seem to be a bit closed in the middle. Is that how lights should be placed? A bit closer to the center?

Sigh.. So may things to think of... I am just glad that I have this forum people to help me through...

Jill (jillandmatt) suggested it to me seeing that I LOVED her light that would not work in my smaller island under a lower ceiling. She was soooo helpful (Jill and her sister-in-law!).

That height should be great. You can tone the light down by putting them on a dimmer or putting lower wattage bulbs in. I do that over my kitchen table. It can take 3 60w bulbs but I put in 2 40w and 1 60w. 480w (total) in that space might blind you so you might try a mix of 25w and 40w.

Can you hang pieces of cardboard from the ceiling to see if it will be too crowded? It's very open so it may be fine.

I love the light! If you really love them, why not order/buy them and see how they would work IRL.

I posted a pic of my pendants in your other thread. I just measured them and they are 8" across at the widest, but they are also bell shaped....and they are about 27" apart. I am thinking that they may look a little crowded on your island, if you try to put two.

Just wanted to chime in that I am a light freek too - therefore every light is on a dimmer in our kitchen, Undercabinet, pots, island has two different dimmers for 3 lights. Electrician didn't get it - but boy does everyone love it! 5:45 wake up making sandwiches is so nicely done with a dimmed single light that after a sip or two of tea can be brightened up. End of the day mood lighting... Worth the $$ now to enjoy for the rest of the years!
I also agree, hang a mark up from the ceiling, balloons on a string or something, they look abit crowded to me too.

You're correct that my pendants will be closer together than yours. I'm not exactly sure how that happened. I think it was one of those late Sunday afternoons at the filthy construction site called a house when I was exhausted, baby was screaming, and DH and sparky were pressuring me for 30 electrical decisions. I vaguely remember DH not wanting the pendant to hang too close to the aisle for fear of someone hitting their head on it (whaaaa??), and there being a ceiling joist in the way of where I would have preferred to place them. I might have uttered "whatever" and walked away towards the end of the discussion just wanting to get back home.

My placement isn't ideal. Yours is better. I may have to chose some skinnier fixtures though. :(

j-yk...I really think you will be fine. And like someone else mentioned...lower wattage bulbs are a great idea, as is a dimmer. Our pendants are also on a dimmer and I had to fight for that! Now, dh thinks it was his idea! LOL!

I need all the morale support I need. Just saw mess-ups the contractors made in my IKEA cabinets - they had wrecked the backpanels of the upper cabinets in 4 places - went to IKEA to see if they sold the panels separately but they didn't... Ikea people were astounded that the contracter managed to crack FOUR of the back panels... They do easily crack but once you make one mistake, you tend to be extra careful with it but the contractors apparently had a way longer learning curve... And they had screwed a side panel onto a cabinet from the OUTSIDE with a screw showing on the outside....

Argh.....

Now have to eat my lunch and finish packing. Just too crazy dealing with moving preparation and overseeing the kitchen remodel from 2 h drive...

Re: not hanging pendants too close to the aisle - it was something we had to consider. hanging our pendant lights was a bit of a balancing act because DH is 6'2" and sons are 6'4" so if they lean into the peninsula to get something off the counter they can hit the lights with their heads. The electrician and I balanced them between what I needed for light which took precedence, and their heights. They have learned to adapt.
