Wanted: Farmhouse Style Table

Hi All,

Its been a while since my last post. We are moved in and we are enjoying our new kitchen. I'm working on some finishing touches before I post the final pictures. I really want to find bar stools, but the most critical item needed is a new dining room table. I want to find a farm house style table, dark wood, with a distressed finish so it won't look too beat up when that eventually happens. Definitely want it to be rectangular and would hope for additional leaves to be an option.

here is an inspiration pictures...(thanks to Andi K in the banquette post) Have you seen anything like this? I will also post an updated photo of the space later when I get home. Then you'll be able to visualize why its so important (currently the table is TINY).

I also like the Hayden table from PB and I like the Cortona too, but the legs are too chunky.

Thanks! You made me smile! The dresses are in DD1's guest room (call it that since it has her old bedroom furniture) but she prefers the Shabby Chic room when she visits us from CA. They were hanging in DD2's room, last house. DD2 still lives in town, but bought her own place 5 years ago, recently traded up. DS had said "no dead animals" in his room ("dog" room) but antlers have found their way in. He lives in Chicago and doesn't visit too often, so I did what I wanted and he hasn't complained. lol I feel in love with Black Forest antlers when in Europe 10 years ago, but didn't buy any. Found those locally 4 years ago - about the time they started showing up in magazines. My favorite antlers are the ones with the head bone covered with suede or leather. The one in back hallway (not sure if it shows) is light, dirty, faded blue and has the metal tags. A local dealer goes to England twice a year to buy and I find a lot of things in her booth. Would love to shop in her house. DH doesn't hunt, but I skinned a rattlesnake and it's in the lower level den on the wall. (Not in photos, and hence DS saying "no dead animals.") The lamb is in the breakfast room and I'm on the computer at the table - glancing at it many times a day, and it always makes me smile. Glad you are enjoying the tour. btw, I have also framed a vintage evening bag that was my grandmothers and a handmade lace bride. Also in the dress room. You can frame anything, and they are unique.

So update on the table. My wonderful step dad who also happens to be a carpenter by trade, offered to build us a new tabletop however we want it! He plans on shipping it in two parts since he lives half way across the country but I'm ecstatic! He's currently finishing recreating this beautiful West Elm shelf for us: West Elm Round Wooden Shelf I believe, I will go ahead and paint the bottom white and allow the new wood top to take over the rest. I just wanted to extend my appreciation again to everyone whom replied. I hope that it is able to help others too!

Your sideboard is great and is nicely styled. It really can only support two of the wooden family photos above it, though. So, I'd try that first. The living area doesn't appear to have any lights. So, I'd opt for floor lamp to the right of the TV. Rather than the fixtures you've chosen for the foyer and island, consider glass. I think the three you've chosen might be a little too much of the same and a little more input than the space can handle - with all of the lines, scroll work and patterning. The glass is simple and will fall into the background so that your chandelier can really stand out as special. I like the arch mirror you have, but am afraid it's too large for that spot. You could consider some art there, instead. The advantage to having art there is that you'll have some color for accenting, should you choose. Here are some glass lighting options to consider. The art is there to show scale and how you can pull color from it for accessories.

They are among the easiest of tables to DIY. Super easy. Or they litter Craigslist like lab puppies litter shelters. If you want "distressed" then second hand is sure the way to go!

At the time we were looking, it felt like we looked at every chain store: crate and barrel, pottery barn, restoration hardware, thomasville, ethan allen, macy's, jc penny's, world market, as well as online stores, and local companies. Most places carried some version of a farmhouse table.

I only have a few bookmarks left from when we bought (it's been a while). Here they are:

Also, Thomasville and Bassett both have "build your own" options where you can pick the top, legs, finish, etc.

Have you checked with any local companies that do reclaimed wood? Most usually can make something for you. Also, here's a few links I have bookmarked....

I will try and post a picture later, but I got a trestle table from Cottage Home, the store mercymygft referenced and would use them again in a heartbeat. You can select your base style, the dimensions, finish and get leaves for it too. We're very happy with ours!

Ours is from Ethan Allen and we love it! We have black distressed legs and a darker wood distressed top. It is called the "new country" I think. I'll check the name and post if its different. You can get a wide variety of color combos and sizes. We went with the largest one and when the two leaves are in we can seat a ton of guests around! We also got black distressed chairs to go with it. Couldn't be happier! Good luck!

There is a place in Virginia that does high quality reproductions of antique tables. I'll look around to see if I can find it again. I LOVED the styles and quality. These looked like heirloom tables that had been in the family forever.
