Need ideas for a farmhouse style dining table update.

I have never posted before but have always found the forums to be helpful.
Anyways, I have my partners late mothers tile top dining room table that he does not want to part with. Unfortunately he had already jumped the gun and ripped all the tiles out, before thinking the project was too much work for him, so for the last year I've had a table with no tiles and a table cloth over it to hide it
We are moving to a new home in a few weeks and I really want to get this piece back in some decent shape so I can proudly use it. I will be going for a neutral MCM/Rustic/Farmhouse vibe throughout the home and really want to update the table to give it that rustic, farmhouse look. He will not let me paint the bottom half so I would like to leave that part as is. I do not think I want to re-tile it either and had the idea of just piecing together a new wood top and painting that white?
I cant seem to find any examples of this, which is leading me to think it may be a dumb idea. I was hoping y'all could give me some ideas on how you might remedy the situation. The table top measures 66x39 inches and it has a middle leaf but I may just casually forget about that. Thank you!

I'll check the name and post if its different. You can get a wide variety of color combos and sizes. We went with the largest one and when the two leaves are in we can seat a ton of guests around! Comments (4)You could put a sideboard there and/or some art. You many not be able to put furniture on the wall. It depends on the clearance between the wall and the chairs. Do you have plans for the rest of the space? Paint, rug, curtains, table and chairs, light fixture? Those should come first. Comments (9)Replace the brick with "some kind of brick or stone facade"?! WHOA - problem is NOT the original brick structure, its all the mishmash of the additions that dont relate to original structure thats the problem. What you propose will only just add on another layer to the mishmash. Not to mention an unnecessarily monumental and expensive task. i dont know if you have to go as far as N suggested - but certainly rethink windows (size, proportion, style), siding, etc. of the add ons so they relate better to the original. Yes architect or professional would be worth talking to - theres an art to fitting new additions to mesh well with old. You want it to relate and repeat some design elements of the original, but without attempting an exact match (not really possible.) Get colors for siding/trim that relate to ea other better, and fewer colors. The riot of colors youve got going there there - greens, yellow-beige, reds, white, brown, is too much. Simplify your palette - pull out some beiges/ buffs/grieges from the brick and stick to those. As much as I love green, that has got to go. If you use white it should be a creamier white, not a stark white. You could de-emphasize the red in your color scheme by choosing another color to paint around your windows (looks painted) and change he red trim.... but do leave the red brick... its very charming and unique and since it reads more like a brown red than the painted red trim... it relates well to your reddish brown roof (which I assume is not changing, or is it?)...See MoreDark kitchen... need help! Comments (27)Determining what can or cannot be changed based on budget is perfectly reasonable. We don't all have unlimited resources and sometimes have to make things work. There is also no crime in owning a small space. You know you need to de-clutter, but it sounds like you are having difficulty figuring out what you need and finding space for what need. My advice is to go through everything - but only get rid of the things you are sure you don't need/want. Place a small rubber band around each item (Handle of pots and pans, around the cords for small appliances, over the handles of serving spoons. . . For plates, platters, bowls ... buy a few sheets of tags and place one on each item. Put stuff away. Throughout the year, as you use things remove the rubber bands and stickers. Next fall you will know everything that has a sticker or a rubber band was not used in the past year and is not serving a useful purpose. (this works for clothing, books, all kinds of things in your home where parting with the items causes stress). To utilize the space above the cabinets buy enough containers to line up from one end to the other. Measure the space you have from top of cabinets to the ceiling to figure out what height. You probably have 12" from the wall to the front of the cabinets - get something narrower than this. Place a white sheet of paper on the front side and list what is inside each container. They will have a uniform look straight across the kitchen. Far better than the 100 individual multi-colored items stacked on top of the cabinets now. Amazon Link to bins that may work For the ceilings - the best fix if you can't replace is paint. Remover tiles. Prime with a good sealing, stain blocking primer. Paint the ceiling tiles and the metal grid all the same color. (White). Replace the ceiling tiles. If I were working with your kitchen I would not paint the cabinets - just clean. I would get a peel and stick backsplash - Back Splash really doesn't take a ton of abuse - this will work for a cosmetic update. I would look for something with blue and yellow I like this one Peel and stick Yellow and Blue I would then tackle removing or painting the wood panel wall - I would paint a nice soft yellow to work with the new back splash. Paint the trim and baseboard White. It looks like your countertop is square edged laminate. I would also cover the laminate counter top with sheet laminate. Not hard to do - get nice white counter tops for a couple hundred dollars. Take the curtain off the door - not needed, not adding any decorative value. 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoYou don't want plexiglass on top - it's very easy to scratch when cleaning and also can get cloudy from certain things used on it. And you can find a more affordable underlayment than plexiglass. It's not cheap. Any mirror/window store can cut glass to fit your table. But you'll probably exceed your budget with glass.
Maybe not modern enough, but I was thinking copper tiles would look good, esp with glass over them so they are easy to clean and won't discolor. Or maybe a piece of sheet copper, tho' not sure the cost. It would develop patina (if not under glass) but that could be cool.
This would take some diy skills to get all the wood pieces to fit, but HD will cut pieces to order.
Also, formica makes some fabulous patterns; it would be beautiful and carefree. Not sure of cost, though, but maybe even a remnant would work.

6 years agoSince you say you like the Herringbone, here are some DIY instructions using a very similar table Herringbon Table DIY, the bottom is white but you could always strip and restain the bottom.
