What is the additional pill bottle size piece that is occasionally by a sink. Is it for high-risk living? TIA

Are you talking about the dishwasher air gap? It's for overflow - I've never seen one in action and my DD don't have to have one:

LOL!!! If it gets to the point of Allison's picture you have big problems!! Water coming out of the airgap means you have a blockage. It really is for air. The Miele DW's don't require it, and there are some plumbing techniques, I think, that can substitute for it, but in many places it's blindly required by code no matter what. If you run a search in the Appliances forum you can find all kinds of interesting info on the subject.

Every electrical motor has a maximum rpm that it can turn without sustaining damage. Once that speed is exceeded, centrifugal force will pull the windings from the armature and they will bind into the stator. In the case of the Prius transaxle we are actually talking about a rotor assembly that has permanent magnets attached to it. Exceed the rated speed of that rotor and it will grenade. The engineers are correct. http://eahart.com/prius/psd/ In order for the gas engine to propel the car, MG1 actually has to be a generator and provide resistance for the engine to push against, as well as MG2 being a motor that helps the gas engine push the car. Using the java applets on the site I provided you get to see the normal operation of the motors in the transaxle, and how they work together. Take note there are times that MG1 actually is forced to spin backwards. The Prius has a maximum vehicle speed of 94mph, with the primary reason being risking over-revving the electric motors and causing a catastrophic failure of the transaxle. This "what color is my paint" thread turns up frequently, even when the finished paint is the same manufacturer as the sample used in selection. And more so when the paint manufacturers differ. There are several common causes: 1. No two paint mixtures are exactly the same, even from the same manufacturer and color. There are always small variations. Those who have tried small spot touch-up painting know what I am talking about. 2. And then there's the lighting that may be used to select a paint color versus the lighting used to illuminate the final painted area. Natural light varies each day, depending on the angle of the sun, the quantity of direct and indirect light in the painted space (or not) and reflections. Artificial light varies depending on the type and temperature of the lamps (bulbs) used. 3. A simple reason for finished paint to not closely match the sample: Most painted surfaces are vertical. Often paint samples are viewed, and decisions made, with the sample placed horizontally. The difference between the appearance of a vertical surface compared with a horizontal surface can be surprisingly great. Always view samples in the same plane and in the same light as the final painted surface. Combined, these lighting effects help explain why painted surfaces may appear different at different times of day, and why the appearance of painted surfaces in the daytime may appear to be different than the same surfaces during evening hours. It's a simple question with some less than simple ingredients.

I did read somewhere about the bottom of a purse being yucky. 'Losing' my purse in Italy one time, taught me a valuable lesson about keeping my purse on my person. My purse never sits on the floor. I use a purse hanger to hold it on the edge of the table. If the purse hanger doesn't work because of table design, I hang it on my knee or wear the strap across my chest. I don't carry fashionable purses because, 1) I can't be bothered and 2) I prefer function over fashion for the safety factors... primarily strap design so I can do the 'across-the-chest' wearing. Also, I had a hook in my old kitchen where I hung my purse as I had very little counter space for it to land on. No room to cook, much less store a purse. So I guess I only need to worry about the sponge, can opener, garbage can, ..... :-) Pepper ps. I did get my purse back. Bless the people at the restaurant. And now I need to think about where I can hang my purse in the not-yet-finished-past-schedule kitchen.

It was impossible to hit "Like" after reading your post, Campanula. Hearing about Mr. Campanula's situation did put the gardens in perspective. "Let the woods be woods" is sane advice. I often think that if my dh & I were so lucky as to be able to travel around the world for a year seeing all the sites and gardens I've always longed to see and if there were no one here to water, prune, weed, etc., we would return to woods.... especially considering the way tulip and maple tree seedings take hold in the yard. There's much truth in mxk3's post. A little spark does help us bounce back. Like all of you who have battled droughts and water rationing, this year's garden has become survival of the fittest. I don't expect much from my roses until the fall. And so I've also begun thinking about bulbs and looking again at my John Scheepers and Van Engelen catalogues. Campanula, your mention of T. humilis alba coerulea oculata made me smile. I've circled that one, too! I think its brilliant whiteness will sparkle in the gardens. And that blue center is luscious.

Whoa! That's a cool picture. I have NEVER seen that before! I've also never had an dishwasher airgap. From reading here for the last few years, though, I think that some places require one to meet code. I also know that people have them installed, and then replace them with something more useful after the inspection is completed.

Okay, I checked out the terms for you:

You have to have some way to prevent backflow. Some DW's (presumably inc. Miele) have a built-in check valve. You could instead install a "high loop" on the drain. Or you can have a visible airgap on the sink edge. Airgaps prevent the sink water, or anything that backs up in the line, from getting into the DW, same as high loops or check valves, and also give you a warning when you have a stoppage like in the picture above.

Lowspark is right about people removing ones that are put in just for code, but they're not useless. If you have a check valve or high loop they're redundant and unnecessary. Otherwise, you really do need one.
