repurposing tabletops into island countertops?

I was trolling craigslist for chairs and of course they usually come with tables, so as I scrolled by hundreds of table pictures (thank goodness for craigslist fusion and Firefox) - with wood tops, granite tops, even marble tops, usually for $100 or less (or $200 if a set with 6 chairs), I thought, "why don't people repurpose these tabletops into island countertops?" The average table is 42 x 72 which is probably larger than most islands (not on gw, but in the real world). Seems that even with the fabrication to make it fit and redo the edges if needed, it would come out cheaper than buying new wood tops or granite/marble slabs. Has anyone done this or thought of doing this?
