Philadelphia and surrounding (NJ etc) Where can I get quartzite?

We are building a house about 1 hr. outside Philadelphia, and we want to put Blue Macuba (we think) in our kitchen. If anyone around Philadelphia/ New Jersey/ even DC has any idea of where we could look at/ buy quartzite slabs, I would be greatly appreciative of the names of stone yards. I've tried searching online but no one is really clear on what they do and do not have. We are willing to drive if need be.

Marva Granite in Beltsville, MD had Blue Macuba when I was there a month ago. They are about 15 or 20 minutes off of I-95, north of DC. It is still listed in their inventory. I would definitely call to confirm that they have it, and also confirm that they would ship to your area.

Blue Macuba was a very beautiful and striking stone when I saw it. Marva had a nice selection of other quartzites when I was there. I don't think they give out samples, so bringing any color samples with you would probably be good.

Thanks! I will call and see what they've got. We're not going to look at anything for about 2 weeks or so yet, but I hope they will still have it when it is time! I've been getting very nervous about being able to locate it!

You are correct, neighborhoods in Philadelphia are most often kept with pride and remain extremely stable over a period of years. My post was unclear. I meant that an extremely stable (read well kept, and inhabited by actual homeowers) neighborhood can be bordered by a less than stable (read not so well kept, and often inhabited by renters) neighborhood and that transition can occur in a matter of city blocks. I was sharing with an outsider to look to the margins of their neighborhood, and not to be suprised or overly concerned about dodgy borders. I should have added that in areas where there is a renewed interest (read renters are replaced by new home owners, often young families with resources), those dodgy borders tend to clean up, very nicely.

EVERYONE is asking me whether I had a cheese steak or not!! I'm afraid I didn't! There was too much other stuff I wanted to try and no offense to anyone from the area because I know Philadelphia is famous for their cheese steaks, but I can get one at home. To me, it's like having baked beans when you come to Boston! We ate at this little Chinese place for lunch one day and I got chicken noodle soup with dumplings - they had to be the best chicken dumplings I have ever eaten in my life! And I can zip over to Chinatown here in Boston on my lunch hour any time I want, so I've had plenty of dumplings. So I guess I'll have to save the cheese steak experience for another time lol!! Being new here, I didn't know that so many of you live in the area - if I go again next year (which I would love to as long as the gals don't mind crowding me into their hotel room again!) I'll definitely give you a heads up and maybe we can all meet up at the Market one afternoon. And I'll have to make sure I check out the Italian market as well! Except for one afternoon when we did some sightseeing (went to Eastern State Penitentiary because my daughter saw it on Ghost Hunters, so I just had to go! then the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall) we pretty much stuck to the Flower Show and the Reading Market other than going into Chinatown for dinner at night. I'm going to try and make some cinnamon rolls this weekend - I can't get those Amish baked goods out of my head!!! I'd probably weigh 500 pounds if I lived around there lol!! Lisa

I'm just across the Delaware River from Philly. I've stayed at the Four Seasons several times and thoroughly enjoyed it. I see twins painted differently from each other all the time here in Philadelphia and the 'burbs. The twins that are different architecturally from each I have seen in Chestnut Hill, Mount Airy and West Philadelphia, close to University City. Hey, just 'cause your neighbor likes it one way, doesn't mean you have to like it! That's the Philadelphia way. I've always called twins twins and houses with living units stacked one on top of the other duplexes or triplexes. I guess when it gets up to four you call it an apartment building. The again, I lived on the first floor of a house that had been converted into apartments, so there were three stacked apartments, but the entire house was a twin. Now that I think about it, there were some architectural differences in the two houses. I would say that I lived on the first floor of an old house. Got the message across.

Here are some stone yards that have good selections, maybe you can give them a call:
Stonehenge4stone (Chester PA), has good selection of unusual stones you may not find elsewhere in the area.

Doyle and Gerlach (Sewell NJ), you'll need to call ahead to ask questions or make an appointment, they're warehouse is really nice.

Cole Brothers Granite and Marble (Elmer NJ), WONDERFUL staff and nice selection of slabs, call ahead and they'll let you know if they have it.

Is Cambria the same thing as quartzite? (I'm only looking at granite and tend to get the other materials mixed up)

If it is and if you want to travle north towards Allentown I can get the name of at least one, if not more. All my brochures are at home so I can post them tonight if I can find them and if you still want/need them.

Thanks craftlady, but cambria is different I think. I THINK camrbia is quartz, not quartzite. I get confused too, I know some people even refer to the blue macuba quartzite as a granite, but I don't think it is...

We bought our quartzite at CH Briggs in Telford, PA.

It's not Blue Macuba, but it's worth a phone call. The sales staff there is very nice and will send you photos of anything they have.

We got our countertops (and looked at a lot of quartzite) at All Marble and Granite in Ridgefield Park, NJ. They have two locations in NJ, one in CT and one in PA.

Here is "the Creme" (as my local tile store owner/fabricator put it): OHM Int'l, in Monroe Twp. (exit 8a on the NJ turnpike).

We're outside of Philly and just went there a couple weekends ago. It was well worth the 1 hr. 20 minute trip. We made an appointment - you may need to check out whether you need to go thru a fabricator or if you can buy directly. It truly is AMAZING: it's an indoor HUGE warehouse of granites, quartzites and marble. You can check out their website at:
