Learn From My Mistakes
Comments (5)Some years you just have to give up on the seeds and buy seedlings. Chalk it up to experience and learn from the problems. I had planned to WS all my plants for my vegetable garden, but too much happened and I just didn't get a good start. I was happy to see that my 2 local garden centers had most of the seedlings that I wanted. The rest of my plants I can grow with direct sowing. Better luck next year. Comments (52)pippi, I think I've been all over the map on this one. Was too tired last night to try to explain. Now I have decided when I'm up to it, I'll make a simple web page w/link here, start a thread, embed just a few photos, and ask for help and suggestions. No point in asking for help when I'm not in a position to carry through with any of it and using plants that have germinated w/WS'ing. In short, the blue is my garage, that huge taupe structure is my neighbor's garage; it's sunk lower from my property line, and if I start messing there, I'm waiting to see what the new neighbors are going to be like. That's about the only place I can put my raspberries if they germinate, barely a half day of sun though. And they wouldn't look pretty like flowers or shade plants. So I'm not sure what you thought was a shed. The extension to my house there is my computer room. The garage I have a problem with tree roots, water competition, and dripline. There's a nice bleeding heart just to the right of the entry door, and forget-me-nots (not myosotis) self seed readily there. But you know what BH's look like by late July. I had columbines all across, gave one away, the others have petered out. I moved my astilbe because it wasn't happy there and have to haul water because the hose doesn't reach. On the right on my blue garage now there is a trellis with clematis and rose with canes not hardy to my zone, am ripping that out. Hard to keep it weeded there, bit off more than I can chew actually. If it would work, I'd like to plant my delphs, monkshod, couple other possible choices, and/or poppies there out further IF they could handle the dripline. It needs some height at the back. Removing the lilac bush and losing half my apple tree, it gets more than a half a day of sun now. I've planted a lot of flowers in a few places since those photos were taken. My most urgent priority but am dreading it is that I need gutters that work. Paid a guy to do a most of it, screwed it up totally, they don't work, and the downspouts have been checked for clogging, none last check. The way the drainage is now makes it impossible to plant anything around a lot of the house and garage. Rain barrels would be a plus, but more work to keep going. Right now it's 5 gal buckets at one horrible place just at the top of the steps with water pouring out of the gutter when it rains. I have to empty into the sprinkling can to get rid of it or carry it in buckets down to the street and dump it....See MoreLearning from Mistakes?
Comments (9)I can't believe anyone can have too much space in their garden - if so, i want to move to their place! My biggest problem this last year was the peppers. We had a really cool spring, and I planted them out too early and the darn things never forgave me for the insult. I also got a huge aphid infestation last year and I suspect it was because I did not have enough bean teepees up (again I screwed up on the timing of getting out the pole beans). Usually the lady bugs like to use them for their nurseries, so I am going to hafta make sure I put out lots of bean teepees this year. I planted a bunch of cosmos and that did pretty well as a trap crop, but I was an unhappy camper for about 3 weeks late spring last year. Glad to hear I am not the only one who can't seem to make enough compost (or get the timing right on stuff!). I am an avid lasagna gardener, but even layering leaves and grass clippings and straw year round doesn't keep up with the veggies needs (we have no soil here - just a couple inches of clay over caliche). I buy my compost from a local shop that is organic - top dress twice a year and side dress as things seem to need it. every time I hear someone talk about the importance of double digging I hafta laugh - when we need to dig a hole in our yard, we hafta rent a concrete chisel. Even a posthole digger won't touch the caliche. No way we can double dig here!...See MoreLearn from my mistake
Comments (18)"But really, if you had been married, would this have turned out any differently? It would not have changed the underlying causes of unemployment, drug abuse and infidelity. How would it have changed the legal process?" Financially and legally it would have been dramatically different. I put a substantial amount of money down and I may not see one penny of it after everything is said and done. No, IÂm not sure how a divorce would have panned outÂa divorce decree that orders sale of the house?Âat least we could have walked away splitting the profit in half? I donÂt know. But I imagine it would be easier and cheaper than what I am going through. A partition lawsuit is VERY costly and VERY lengthy. In most cases just the threat of lawsuit scares the bejesus out of the other party and an agreement is met. Not in my case. (He refuses to sell out of spite) In fact my lawyer, the court clerk, the committee selling the house has never seen a partition lawsuit to the endÂThis lawsuit has been a year in the worksÂand itÂs not over!!! Anyway, no, marriage would not have prevented the drastic change in his personality. But you donÂt know. Sylvia, the thing is, when we bought the house, at the time we had already been living together for 5 years. There WAS no pressure and no rush. Believe me, the way he changed and the way things went downÂI NEVER prepared (or expected!) for that. It blindside meÂand many other people in his life. I did not want to imply that you had to be married to buy a house together. I was simply warning others that there are legal documents you can draw up if you purchase a home with someone. So in the event of a falling out both parties interests are protected....See Morecarybk
