Super (or lazy) Susan size question

I am trying to figure out what size turntable can fit in various cabinet sizes. Omega National Products' web site is not very helpful in this regard.

There are lots of threads here about lazy versus super, but I can't seem to find any info about sizing different diameters and cut-outs to cabinets.

One obvious difference is opening size. A 33" x 33" yields about a 12 1/2" opening, a 33" x 36" yields about a 15" opening, and a 36" x 36" about a 17" opening. I'll probably do the 33x36.

But what turntables will fit inside?

I think this will (just) fit a 28" full round, or (comfortably) a 32" Kidney, Detent (pie shaped cut-out from the circle). I guess the advantage of the full round is you don't have to set it back to a particular orientation before you close the door, while the advantage of a 32" Kidney is that it will hold somewhat more stuff.

To go for a 32" full round, you'd need a diagonal door in the corner, or a deeper-than standard base cabinet.

Is that about right? Anybody care to weigh in on this?

I may be missing something, but if you're putting a circular "shelf" into a rectangular cabinet, i.e. your 33"x36" - the maximum diameter of your circle will be constrained by the smaller of the two dimensions. This will result in lost or unusable space in the cabinet. Better to keep it square for a lazy/super susan. Good old fashioned graph paper and a compass may help visualize and finalize your dimensions. There's nearly a full square foot of space differential (per shelf) between using a 28" diameter shelf vs a 32" diameter shelf. With two levels in the cabinet, that's a lot of storage space.

We are getting a carpenter to build us Super Susans. I am sure you can find one too. We are making sure that he makes the circle as big as possible to avoid wasting space, and to avoid that black hole where things can fall off. By having your turntable on a fixed shelf, nothing can fall down below (could fall off the turntable if you spin too fast, but it's less likely). With the pole type LS, because the shelves often aren't perfectly level, ie because of weight issues they can tip, and things are more likely to fly off. Think about it, if you have a spice turntable (I have a rubbermaid plastic one that I think I paid 50 cents for at a garage sale), it lays flat on the shelf, and nothing flies off, and those are just small bottles. So, have a turntable on a solid shelf, make the circle as big as possible, and build up the sides a few inches, I think you can learn to like Susan.

Lucky you!!! Definitely rig up a shelf system. What your friend had was a Super Susan vs the Lazy Susan you have now. Any hardware store will have the turntable mechanism- they're around $10. Obviously you can set the bottom one on the bottom. And you'll need to cut a shelf to support the top one. Here are a couple of pics of super susans- hope this helps. (We still have to build them for our kitchen). You will appreciate the added space of not having to fit things around the pole, and it is far more stable.

firsthouse: if you read this, would you be able to measure the front dimensions of your corner? I'm trying to figure out how much wider the left side is than the right so I can talk to my cab guy about it. thank you! katy-lou: I have sort of the same thing now except I wasn't smart enough (pre-GW) to have DH make a shelf stepped back like yours. Both shelves are full depth and although I can keep a lot on them, it kills my back to get down low enough to dig for the stuff on the bottom back. I'm not nice and neat like you and I keep putting more stuff in there because I can so it's constantly shuffling to get out what I want. Your cabs are beautiful, though and I do appreciate the input and pic. I love seeing the different examples of how people make things work.

Oh, thanks for the explanation. That makes so much sense. What a cool idea. I'm going to visit there to see what other unique ideas they have. Looking at those prices, then figuring out how many times you'll reach for storage in that corner over the years, you're talking pennies, maybe even fractions of a penny, per each time you access stuff there. YES, money will spent if they allow you to find what you need quickly and easily. Also think of the seconds you'll save each time you use them and, if time is money.....right? And less aggravation, too. I'm sold.
