Still confused by farm sink options
Comments (3)rschleicher--We have the Blanco Cerana 33" firelcay farmhouse sink. It has been in since August of 2012. I am no expert on the fireclay, but I can tell you so far so good. We have a disposal and haven't had any problems. After reading on GW about the sink grids I finally decided that I would try one. We went with the Blanco Sink Grid as seen in the link below. This has been great! There are many advantages to sink grids, not the least of which is that is protects the bottom from scratches. I am loving my sink! Hope it stays that way... :) Here is a link that might be useful: blanco sink grid...See MoreQuestion about sink base cabinets and Apron front/farm sinks
Comments (12)I have almost NO room at all under mine. The garbage disposal just about fills it. In fact, if you look closely on the left door you can see the black marks were it rubs against the inside of the door. The GC had to rout out some relief to get the door to close completely. I also had to carefully wrap all the hanging cords around the drain pipe to clear a bit of storage space above the pipe for the fertilizer and watering bottle for my plants. Still, I got the sink and the look I wanted that has the sink sitting forward, seemingly on the legs (that's what brought the disposal up against the door). Think about what you want under there. I could have gotten a smaller disposer (I compost so use it infrequently). And I don't use a lot of cleaners. I also don't have things under there like instant hot water or a soap dispenser -- just the guts of an airswitch. If you want those things think about where they'll all go. All in all I'm very happy with the look and the storage works for me. But you should be aware going in that it's sparce!...See MoreQues. about farm sink caulk??
Comments (11)I'd probably use white silicone caulk if I were going to use caulk at all. Clear caulk might come out looking dark next to the white cabinets and white sink. I found the non-silicone caulk a lot easier to work with, but i think it dries out and looks bad after a while. However, either caulk would be hard to apply in such a tiny crack. But I don't think I'd caulk at all. It looks barely noticeable. In fact I wouldn't have perceived it as a mistake at all. We worry about every imperfection while we're in the middle of something, but never once notice it again when it's all done. That's been my experience, anyway. By the way, you put me to shame. I made my own cabinets, and am embarrassed to say I didn't think to cut a curve into the base at all -- I have a square base and a rounded sink bottom. Making a little curved cut-out is on my list of things to do, but that list seems endless, so I doubt I'll get to it any time soon!...See MoreNew here - Please help me with a farm sink/counter issue!
Comments (6)I'd also consider a drip rail. We did it to hide our shimmed up sink and love it! It's basically a bullnose that was nailed on after everything was installed. You could also consider using a drip rail made out of a strip of your counter material - this looks great too. Also, we have the negative reveal (you can see top of sink) and I LOVE it, much more than the positive reveal I used to have. It doesn't get "grimy and black" at all because you wipe it right down with the sink! To the contrary, the caulk on my positive reveal got a lot dirtier because I would forget to go peeking under there to scrub. It's harder for counter installers to cut an exact negative reveal, so if I were the suspicious type I might quietly suggest that's why they're pushing the overhang. ;-) here's my drip rail: negative reveal:...See Morepirula
