advice needed on kitchen layout
Comments (6)Believe me, I struggled with the placement of the DW. We definitely eat most of our meals in the breakfast rm in our present house, and I assume the same will be true for the new one. I plan to put a dish drawer in the breakfast room end of the island, so that I can stand at the open DW and easily put dishes away. Every day glasses will be stored upper cabinet to the left of the sink, handy to the sink for quick drinks of water and fairly close to the frig. It "feels" more normal to me to put the DW to the right of the sink; it will be handy to unload the bulk of the dishes straight into the every-day-dishes drawer. My nice glassware will be stored in the cabinet across the room, first cabinet nearest the door. I wanted something pretty to go there, so that when you walk into the room, that's what'll be right in front of you. But the pedestrian, everyday glasses will be in the other cabinet, to the left of the sink. I will have a built-in buffet in the dining room, and I also have a china cabinet plus a smaller, matching, buffet piece that will go in there. I keep my fine china in the china cabinet, my crystal in the smaller buffet, and big, rarely used items, plus things like my Spode Christmas china, will be stored beneath the built-in. I have an extensive blue/white china collection, and much of it will go in plate racks above the buffet--the type that have a narrow, grooved shelf but also a rail in front to hold the plates and platters (I have many beautiful ones that right now are hidden in solid door cabinets). Another plate shelf will be above the windows in the breakfast room, and my antique cherry buffet will go in the corner and will hold smaller blue/white plates I've collected. Incidentally, because of my grandmotherly age (!!!), I hate bending and stooping to unload the DW, so I plan to have it raised a bit--just up to the level of the snack bar beyond the clean-up sink wall. None of this is written in stone at this point. We're at the early design phase. Our architect has given us #1 preliminary sketches and now has them back to modify for #2 prelim sketch. I did take this Version 5 of my kitchen to him two days ago to incorporate into the next sketch, so it certainly is not too late to make any changes. Thanks for any and all advice and comments!...See MorePullout trash bin - knob or pull?
Comments (29)Nope, pull is better...it distributes the force of your "pulling" along the drawer better. Besides, the cabinet behind gets just as "worn" as behind a pull...I know from experience w/my old kitchen (it started w/knobs and it got worn where your fingers fit around the knob stem). However, with a pull, you really don't touch the cabinet at all... Like Trudymom, we usually put a dishcloth on the trash pull for dirty hands...at least until we install the foot pedal. Heads up...if you have soft-close, you will have to disengage the soft-close to use a foot pedal. This is actually the hold-up on our pedal installation...my DH is balking at losing the soft-close! Hafele is the only place I've found the foot pedal as well. There are two models...one for trash cans hanging from rails (like CarryScott's mother's) and one for trash cans sitting an a "shelf" (like mine). Both foot pedals are designed for frameless, but our own MeToo2 posted how s/he modified them back in 2007. Comments (8)Sorry, I didn't mean to point out a 'flaw' that you had not noticed! But, honestly, I think it would be a bigger mistake to extend the upper cabinet further out than the lower cabinets because visually it is a stronger relationship than how the cabinet balances with the upper on the right of the window. Even if you put something on the floor right there it will look odd that the upper cabs go further over than the lower. Could the granite be cut differently to put the seam elsewhere? I've seen on some TV shows an installation with a seam right in the middle of the sink and it is virtually invisible. Will your granite really show a seam that much?...See MoreThe bins in my 18' trash pull-out are too small.
Comments (17)OK...I checked this evening and you're right GardenWebber! It's a little over half-full when it's time to empty...we wait until the trash can is really full, too! Like RHome, my DH goes around and collects trash from the PR, Library/Computer Room, etc. to fill it. Also like RHome, we'd rather take out a bag that's not quite full than leave it sitting out where the dogs could get into it. One thing, in our old kitchen we had a larger stand-alone trash can that was a tad larger than the 13-gallon bags and we did find that if we filled them to the top we couldn't adequately close them...so I think we're happier with this arrangement than the previous....See Morekitchenaddict
