Corrected marble counter installed - thanks to all of you!!!

for those of you that remember my recent marble counter issues i wanted to let you know the replacement counter has been installed and looks terrific! thanks to all of you that responded with guidance on what was and was not acceptable. while the GC was not thrilled about it, the old was pulled out and a new fabricator made a new counter.

plumbing of sink and dishwasher is scheduled for monday... need to look for backsplash tile this weekend. the end is near....thank god!

Whoa...what a difference !!! Scene 2 is so beautiful...one is NOT so much LOL. Your cabs are so pretty. I wish my cab guy would have gotten on board about the cab feet that I wanted. Your marble is beautious !!! Can hardly wait to see all. c

Agree with trailrunner, what a big difference! It must have been a huge hassle for you, but aren't you so happy now with the beautiful results??!! That new counter is calling out to be touched :-)

I know this is an old thread. But I know I read old threads when I am trying to make a decision. We put soapstone and marble and wood floors in our kitchen in 2007. So we are going on 8.5 years and I LOVE IT ALL. My kids have grown up with it. We don't baby any surface. To be clear, my style is not slick and modern. I have antiques and an older home so I like traditional materials and I don't mind a "lived with patina"-but having said that I don't think my stone has much of a patina at all. The big island is soapstone. It has a few scratches-mostly from house-sitters and the kids dragging heavy pots across it or cutting directly on it like a cutting board.. But if I oil it (which I do maybe 2-3 times a year) they fade. I did search for a long time and I picked a soapstone that was know to be harder than others with minimal white veining-so this could make a difference. I think we could have the top polished/honed again and it would look brand new. But I think it looks fine. Maybe in another 8 or 9 years. I love it everyday! The carrara marble is around the sink in the most used food prep area of the kitchen. It is honed. I just had a repair company come out (only because we had to do some other work in the kitchen and hubby asked about it) and they honed it again and cleaned it up. It looks brand new (I didn't think it looked bad before). There are a few little pits and chips that cant be fixed-but I don't think they are that noticeable. I just sealed it after the guy left. It was never really sealed before. I have gotten a few stains and I have always gotten them out. I have had etching but I learned how to get that out myself (I use sandpaper-yes and it has worked beautifully for me). I love it every day! We are about to ignore all practical advice again and put marble in our master bathroom. I hope we have as much luck with it as we did in the kitchen. In the next few weeks I hope to post photos of our 8.5 year old finishes.

Yes, I love my kitchen (and the rest of the house) mostly because it's all mine and we are settled. All the little things I agonized and fretted over don't seem so worrisome now. Actually, all the little things I own and will go on the "in the next house" list. ha! All in all, I am happy will all my choices and am thoroughly enjoying it all! What more could I ask for, eh? icheer, my cousin has marble countertops made with tiles usually used for floors. Her brother is a tile setter. The one thing they did differently with the marble is put it real close together. You really can't see the seams unless you get your nose right up there. I don't think they used grout because of that. I am out of town and so is my cousin so can't get anymore details for you. My daughter also has marble tiled floors and it is the same, the seams are so small there isn't any grout. So you might want to check this out because it might be different for marble.

I am in the central valley in California and I have been getting granite bids for a little over 100 sq ft of counters including an island. Will have an undermount sink. Granite is creme bordeaux with a bullnose edge. Prices have ranged from $3975 to $6500. Interestingly some of the ones using the prefab out of China which does somewhat concern me are not the lowest. This is because of the larger island that requires a fabricated slab. I was all set to go with the $5000 job which meant I was buying 3 slabs and hiring the fabricator seperately. The fabricator is the one who did the kitchen for the guy selling the slabs. I would have about 1/2 slab left over in this case. That is when I got the low bid which at first really caused me to wonder. I had not seen their shop so I went by. I was really surprised they actually have a showroom. Got to talking to them and found they just opened this location and had another location somewhere in the Bay area. Their displays did look good. They do their own fabricating from full slabs and don't use any prefabs. Now I have a quandry.

hi jmcgowan - he is a local cabinet maker but unfortunately i cannot refer him due a variety of project issues that occured including the need to rebuild all the doors due to a massive error during finishing.

Yikes, that's bad :-( Sounds like a lot of issues on your job. Anyway, glad it's almost done. I'm sure you can't wait. Looks like it's all turning out nicely, though. Keep the photos coming!

Fabulous! You did it! I was keeping my eye out for your new marble! It looks so right in the second pic. I hope you feel it was worth all the weeks of waiting and hassle.

But.....where is it? Where, oh where, is Babushka? I need to see him approving of the new marble. :)

I love the new Marble Counters! I also love your cabinets and I am sorry to hear about all the hassles but I am sure the wait and the stress of redoing has been all worth it!

thanks all! i am very happy with the outcome. while it was very stressful dealing with the contractor to negotiate a remedy, it was worth it to get the job done right. and, to be fair, i have to admit that during the time of waiting for re-fabrication i went on a planned vacation to italy for 2 weeks so it was pretty painless for me, less so for my house sitter!

given babushka cat has a fan base i would not want to dissapoint!

Breezy - what is the latest on those kittens? i need an update!

Please tell Babushka how stunning he looks gracing your marble. I bet he already knows that though. :)

As far as my kittens go, when we went to see them we fell in love with the mom. She's only about a year old, very petite, with silver tabby markings. She was taking very good care of her 6 babies. We also really liked the female kitten who is black with white. We decided to adopt that kitten and the mom! Then we found out the vet tech, who is fostering the kittens, got talked into taking in an abandoned female kitten the same age as her litter after a boy saved it from being eaten by a couple of dogs. Mom cat took her right in and began nursing her with the rest. The new kitten's personality seems to shine so we decided to take her as well. Two kittens! They were supposed to be ready about Halloween, but mom has now weaned them so they'll be ready before then. DH doesn't want to bring them home until we're back in our house, but I'm afraid that won't be until after Halloween given our recent delays. I still deeply miss my Archie, but I'm ready for cat love again. Somewhere I have a picture of the kittens. Trying to find it. Thanks for asking about it!

breezygirl -i am so excited for you! what a wonderful plan! and you get extra good karma for taking momma cat too! it is always hard to place more mature cats so you are really doing a wonderful thing. i think archie would be happy to know you will be having some cat love again soon! i would love to see the pics!

babushka cat is the king around here. his poor sister has to hold her own - he runs this house and everyone in it!
