Prices of your countertops--all countertops

I am just curious as to the different prices out there for countertops (granite, silestone, butcherblock, soapstone, solid surface, etc.). I thought we could line up all the prices and part of the country you are in just for comparisons sake. So, price of the countertop with installation:

I live in the Rocky Mountain region and I got:

Cambrian Black Antiqued. $62 a square foot installed.

willowdecor: (at least you won and paid 1/2 for your countertops: that's a plus wow! (fyi: that is why we don't take american express! lol: customer always wins!) they should have NEVER charged your card 3 days before install! (I charge cc after I get a Job Completion sheet turned into me by customer stating ok to do so!) gaps: well: have had to deal with fixing terrible 1/2 installed jobs from installer who disappeared off the face of Earth leaving 1/2 installed kitchen. We "DOUBLE durrocked the wall: to fix gaps. They left a hugh mess: customer didn't have running water for 90 days in her kitchen. We installed within one day after she came to us. (went to stone yard same day she walked in our showroom: matched 3cm Portofino Gold as best as could be: moved it: fabricated it after measure same day and installed December 23rd 2007 for her 25 person Christmas party!) WOW! Right! (also: just to let some of you know: when we install: we usually rip out the sheetrock and countertops. then install countertop: granite is 99% level and even: Walls & cabinets and floors are not always level or even. So my tile installers who do the backsplash fix "problems" after the fact: to hide wall issues and CABINETS THAT ARE NOT ALWAYS LEVEL! I make customer sign a disclaimer regarding gaps when we are "not installing" their splash. When you keep existing splash: there might be problems with gaps due to countertop install) It's possible. Just giving heads up on issues that can happen during an install. ***If they cut your countertop wrong! Put your FOOT DOWN: don't let them glue the countertop to your cabinet and tell them to take it back! buy new slab and re-fabricate correctly: once countertop is glued: they are going to try and "talk" you into keeping it the way it is. (how can people stay in business: installing this way: they move around and change their names! LOL) Everyone makes mistakes, but a good installer/business will fix the problem correctly! MISTAKES COST MONEY and fabricator ends up doing a kitchen for FREE: that is why they are usually careful! Marble can be expensive and so are exotic granites! You want your kitchen to look great and have it look right! You deserve that!

Island countertop all one level vs. bi-level with bar seating

Thanks for all the great feedback! I hadn't thought about using the island as a serving buffet for parties, but I can see how that would be very useful. Also, the point about the comfort of the counter height stools vs. higher ones. My husband is tall, but I'm 5'5" and our son is only 14 months old. So probably lower seating would be more comfortable for us (and the grandparents). Right now we're not entertaining much, since we are busy chasing after the toddler, but pre-baby we entertained a lot and I'm hoping to again, once he gets a little older. I'm trying to plan for that. And I assume that down the road, he'll be doing homework in the kitchen and having friends over after school, etc. We do have a huge table in the diningroom, but that space doubles as our home office, so it's always covered with clutter (2 laptops, mail, paperwork, printing supplies, etc.). It would be nice to have an open expanse of space in the kitchen for actual kitchen projects, but I guess I'm afraid that we'll just fill that space up with clutter, too. ;) For those with the single-level island, how do you light your workspace? We were thinking of installing task lighting under the overhang from the bar to light the counter. Now we'll have to rely solely on pendant lighting, I guess. Is that sufficient? Also, do you have power outlets on the island? If we don't have a vertical surface behind the counter, it seems to limit us in terms of where we can plug in appliances.

Is this a ridiculous price for marble countertops?

That whole thing sounds very high to me. We are also outside Philly. We went to Imperial Marble and Granite, they had the best selection of marble that we found anywhere in the area and believe me, we went everywhere (there's a slab place right next to the IMG store) and gave us a great price. We paid $85/sq ft staturietto 3cm marble (34 square feet, plus we paid an extra $25/sq ft on top of that price for a cove ogee edge) Calcacutta cielo marble from the same place, we paid $74 square foot installed (18 sq. feet) Marina argento marble we paid $90 square foot installed (14 square feet) All prices included material and install. Pics on my blog- the staturietto was for the kitchen; calacutta cielo in master bedroom and upstairs laundry and marina argento on the bedroom fireplace) Imperial Marble and Granite WAS willing to work with a slab of stone that we had purchased from a different fabricator (most places were not because it was a slab of blue bahia which is very expensive). It is hard to decipher from my old notes but it looks like they were going to charge me $30/sq foot to fabricate the blue bahia for an island top plus the cost of picking that top up from the other fabricator. I would email Nicole at IMG and ask her for a price quote. She was very nice and helpful, if you want her email just drop me a line through GW and I'll send it to you. We also did not buy our granite through our cabinet showroom. There were many reasons--one was that we were just fed up with our cabinet salesperson/KD and didn't want his firm to make any more money off of our project. We also wanted a better selection and the ability to negotiate the price ourselves. Our KD has a specific fabricator that he pushes (he doens't just sell their granite--he PUSHES it hard). He began giving us the hard sell on his granite fabricator the very first time we met with him and we got the same lecture about the space age granite sealant that this fabricator patented (it turns out that it is actually Sensa granite that is sold at Lowe's!) every time we met with him. After we heard this sales pitch 85 times (and unfortunately we had to hear the entire story--from development of the sealant for the space shuttle to the templating process that is done with a laser and turns out flawless each time!!) I decided that I really wanted to shop around and see what else was out there. We then visited every fabricator in our area and I discovered that I really wanted an exotic granite which unfortunately means more money. Because we dealt with them directly we were able to cut a deal on it. The KD is still pretty bitter about us not buying our granite from him and he tends to blame every problem we have with the cabinets on the granite, but I do not at all regret our decision. Even the cabinet installer who works for the KD said that we got a better deal than using the KD for the granite because they mark up the price so much. Although the installer doesn't have teeth and listens to Rush Limbaugh very loud all day, he may actually be right about this.

Thickness of stone makes a big difference. If you do a search you'll find this has been done a couple of times (so that will add to your data). You do need to consider the 2cm verses 3cm granite or marble though. Obviously the thinner stuff is cheaper.

In SoCal this is what i have found.

Basic granites start at about $10 per sq ft. So lets say uba tubas, pearls, etc run about $10-$20 per sf ft

Mid level granites run $25-$40 per sq ft. Most of the golds belong here.

Exotics start $50 per sq ft - blues and greens. anything azul :)

Then add about $30 per sq ft for fabrication and installation.

I took venkatbo's post to mean 45.00 sq foot including installation and an OG edge. Around here entry level granite during a "sale" is about 50.00 sq foot to start inlcuding installation with anything other than a "pencil" edge being more. (HD price now) Most fabricators charge 70-80.00/sq foot installed for basice granites, blacks 100-120.00 sq/ft and "exotics" go up from there with the sky the limit.

Where we are (Washington state) the price of 3 cm and 2 cm is about the same: The laminated edge on the 2cm makes up the cost difference.

That said, there is a significant difference between fabricators for the same stone. I haven't priced it for a year, but the verde fuoco 2cm with eased edge was around 150/sq ft. I think I could have had ab. black from this fabricator for around 70. Fabrication with these guys was a little more than some and equal to or less than others, but they had a lot of experience with VF and I like their work.

My copper counter top was about 75/sq ft but had a hellacious cut out for the apron front sink.

Butcher block, end grain, close to 100/sq ft.

These are all quotes I have gotten in the last month. I live in the Atlanta area. I have seen promos from a few big fabricators on a few granite colors starting at 37 or 39 a sf. Ususally they have 3 or 4 colors for this price. Also my fabricator has about 12-15 colors of granite that range from 40-59 a sf.

Honed Virginia mist granite, 3 cm, undermount sink, cooktop cut out, standard edge - $70/sf installed. I live in SC and my granite guys drove 150 miles round trip to template and made another trip to install.

Hi Sue,

Just to clarify:
we have 4 counters in all - for a total of ~55 sqft - and a total cost of $2500 that includes 2" matls, installation and ~40ft of OG (including a 6' window sill piece with OG).

Granted they are not custom fabricated 3" slabs, but just 2" prefab slabs - but has all the ingredients we were looking for: the color (Madhura Gold), edge (OG), matches walnut cabs and beige floors, and last but not the least, a good value.

I am a sucker for a really good deal, venkatbo, and it sounds like you got one. Why pay more to get the same granite? Good job. I will be paying that for a pencil edge and OG adds about 15-30 per linear foot so I will have to pass on that. If I had the option at your prices I certainly take it.

They said the cost was $55 per sq. foot..but when I took my total sq. footage and divided by cost...it came to $72 per sq. foot for all charges (a little for the edge, a little for the cutouts...etc.)

Our bid doesn't include the linear foot - I'd have to measure.

Item #1: Install granite countertops with custom edge (OG, I believe we chose) and undermount sink. Install 4" granite backsplash, and install granite at wall at back of sink. (At this location, granite is figured as polished 3/4" edge.) $5500.

It was a great installation job. By "install granite at wall at back of sink"....we had a layer of granite placed on the old windowsill, what's now the pass through to the family room. It does NOT have a custom edge. Basically, the fabricator was able to take a piece of our granite and shape it to fit int he windowsill. Looks lovely that way. It might have looked nicer with an edge, but it was our fault that we didn't tell them that ahead of time.

Granite is on all countertops and the island...maybe 23-24 linear feet.

I am in the central valley in California and I have been getting granite bids for a little over 100 sq ft of counters including an island. Will have an undermount sink. Granite is creme bordeaux with a bullnose edge. Prices have ranged from $3975 to $6500. Interestingly some of the ones using the prefab out of China which does somewhat concern me are not the lowest. This is because of the larger island that requires a fabricated slab. I was all set to go with the $5000 job which meant I was buying 3 slabs and hiring the fabricator seperately. The fabricator is the one who did the kitchen for the guy selling the slabs. I would have about 1/2 slab left over in this case. That is when I got the low bid which at first really caused me to wonder. I had not seen their shop so I went by. I was really surprised they actually have a showroom. Got to talking to them and found they just opened this location and had another location somewhere in the Bay area. Their displays did look good. They do their own fabricating from full slabs and don't use any prefabs. Now I have a quandry.

I have recently moved away from my beloved kitchen but we paid 73.00 sq ft installed for Santa Rita soapstone.

Our quote for honed absolute black was 83.00 sq ft installed.

Our quote in NJ from Garden State SS for Green Mountain was $90/sq ft installed plus something for templating the sink.

M Tex.'s quotes ranged from $85-110/sq ft depending on variety and I assume something for templating but never got far enough with them to ask.

We also got quotes for SS from both Garden State and M Tex in NJ, and after all the taxes, surcharges for getting the stuff into NYC and up to our co-op, templating, cutouts and install, the prices were closer to $110-120 sq ft for the mid-range stones.

In chicago suburbs paid $75.00 sq ft installed, with demi bullnose edge & cutouts for Saara diamond.
