Mosaic marble counter tops

I have a pretty large supply of marble trophy bases. I'd like to cut

the marble into blocks which will eliminate the holes left from the

trophy, leaving marble blocks approximately 2"-3" square.

I'd like to use those marble blocks to "mosaic" my kitchen counter

tops and I'd like to ask for any suggestions y'all might have. My

plan is to use a sealed plywood substrate (5/8"), thinset as an

adhesive, and regular (sanded) grout. I think I'd have to seal the

surface of both the marble and the grout, and I'm not sure what to use.

My mosaic experience is not vast (I've primarily worked with stained

glass thus far.) I've set regular ceramic tile on a counter top and a

bathtub surround eons ago and I think the process should be pretty

similar. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Hubby is a master carpenter and with his help I think my plan is

doable. The only drawback is marble is traditionally for a more

formal home, and our home is traditional but very comfy casual in

style. Will the fact that the marble is not a solid surface, but more

mosaic style help it lend a more casual feel?

I'm very open and receptive to all suggestions to both my process and

my style questions.

Thanks so much!
