only one thing matters: the crumbs go right into the sink.

Our Master bath sinks are undermounts and we have had no problems. We are moving to an undermount in the kitchen because they make cleaning up so much easier, just wipe everything into the sink. No caulk areas on top of counter that you have to keep clean.

There are three different reveals you can get:

1. positive where sink sticks out past granite,

2. negative where granite hangs over sink, and

3. zero where the sink is in line with the granite.

In our bathroom we have negative reveal and I kind of wish I would have done zero reveal but didn't know there were other choices. The reason is that in the bathroom it gets humid and you can tend to get that funky pink mildew which I am worried can get under the counter overhang (although it has not yet done that and it has been over two years since we had them installed).

I think we will go with the zero reveal in the kitchen. I think the drop in sinks tend to get much dirtier around the rim than the undermounts.

The crumbs-into-sink argument is why we will have one. (We have one now too.) They do get gunky at the seam between sink and counter, so you have to clean that. You can get different reveals so that you see more or less of the gunk, though (arguments on both sides!) However, I seem to recall the last drop-in sink getting a bit gunky at the caulk edge between sink and counter too---it's just in a different place.

Never had a problem with leaks---if it's installed properly I can't imagine why that would be any more of an issue than with other sinks. Interestingly, our cabinets clearly had a leaky sink in their past, and that one almost certainly was not undermount since we think the old counters were linoleum before the PO swapped them out for granite. So---I don't think that should be much of a factor one way or the other.

I think the utility of the sink far outweights any extra cleaning (and again, not so sure there is much of that!) We don't even have a disposal, but it's still super useful to be able to wipe crumbs from the counters into the sink and then empty the strainer.

Oh here is a good argument - If you don't get your undermount sink then your DH can clean the counter and sink for the remainder of your lives :-)

I have a positive reveal. No gunk, no leaks, no problems! I used to have a drop in stainless sink and hated the gunk and crumbs that got stuck there.

Monkeymo, that is what I keep telling him, I can't imagine an undermount sink would be WORSE than dealing with the rim of a drop in sink.

But then, I'm the one stuck cleaning around that darn rim, not him!

Don't you just love it when they get all set on something being a certain way when they aren't actually the person who's got to deal with it?

My DH is a wonderful mechanic, plumber, electrician and carpenter, but with the help of GW, I've strayed so far out of his "idea" of what a kitchen should be that he can't comprehend half of what I'm trying to achieve.

It might be different if this wasn't a total DIY project - poor guy!

Marcybaby, decide what undermount sink you want (everyone here will help) then just buy the darn thing. It's a sink. I doubt your husband will hold it against you and pack his bags. I think if you stay away from sharp cornered sinks (that maybe harder to clean)or very very deep sinks if your husband is very tall (over 6' 2) and would have to bend more, well, I think he will like it.

Sounds like he likes to tinker... perhaps this might be of interest to him. I am having my DH check this out because it seems like a possible way to undermount on a granite counter but still be able to change out the sink if you needed to.

I have to keep DH somewhat happy, or I'll be installing the darn sink all by myself. Though I ended up doing the bulk of the work with mounting the drop in sink, I'm smaller so I fit better in the cabinet. Since DH severed his finger this spring (they put it back together and it looks and works pretty good) I've had to do more stuff like that. Each month he's getting more finger strength back, but it will be a long time before he's back to where he was.

I was looking at Ikea butcher block counters and found some pictures of a apron front sink that is not undermount. Could not find any descriptions of the sink.
