pics of Woodmode cabinets (and a couple of Brookhaven)

I think someone had requested recently pics of Woodmode cabinets. As part of school I had a chance to take pics of some at my teacher's design studio and in a model home for an over 55 community where she is the in-house designer.

The design studio is set up as vignettes to give people an idea of available options so these aren't complete kitchens and bathrooms.

the model home had a basement kitchenette associated with a game room and then a butler's pantry, hall pantry, laundry room and kitchen which I photographed and set up a slide show in photobucket.

Thanks for the post. As I am anticipating quotes for my dream white kitchen from both Woodmode and Crown Point it was interesting to see your pics.

Thank you so much for the pix. I love seeing all those examples. Tearose, I got bids from both of those places. Woodmode was quite a bit more expensive. I ended up going with a local company. I am also doing a white kitchen.

For what it's worth, my old kitchen had 20-30 year old WoodMode cabinets with metal drawers like yours, and they were in absolutely fabulous (perfect) shape, even at that age. (Kitchen was tiny and ugly, so they had to go...) They worked perfectly, held considerably more stuff than 3/4" thick wooden drawers, and were excellent in every way. I'd choose them over wooden drawers in a heartbeat -- even for a moderate upcharge. But that said, they shouldn't have been a surprise to you. I'd seek clarification from an independent source as to which costs more, and from your KD, which style your order specified (if any). IMO, you certainly shouldn't be charged more for a drawer style you didn't specifically authorize, and a good KD would have reviewed all of the options with you so you could choose the one you preferrred. My best advice? Know that these are really, really good drawers. If you haven't been taken advantage of financially, I'd see if you can learn to like them, now that you know they're really, really good drawers. But if you can't learn to like them, you should be able to get them replaced, seeing how they weren't what you wanted.

We just got BH cabinets but I never even considered using Home Depot or Lowes. The experience of the KD we used for Brookhaven blew me away. Quality wise, I think BH is much better than what you'd get at the big box stores but that could just be me. Our KD was amazing and worked with us to get what we wanted in our space. The quality of the BH cabinets in the showroom was really good and they seemed much sturdier than the ones at the big box stores or even through other Kitchen Designers. BH has a lot of different options - framed vs frameless (which we got), particleboard vs plywood (we got), tons of different inside features, really solid drawer glides and soft closes, etc. We wanted cherry and their cherry was really nice and much better looking than other lines. Note, we did not look at full custom cabinets and our KD actually told us that there was no need for us to look at their Wood-mode line since we could get exactly what we wanted with BH and spend about 30% less.

About half of my kitchen is the same Brookhaven cabinets that sarahandbray has. They are wonderful -- well made adn beautifully finished. Since I just saw a thread about cabinet depth, I will point out that standard wall cabinet depth on Brookhaven is 13" and allows you to fit larger plates and bowls in your upper cabinets. Don't get trapped into thinking that wood is necessarily better than composite materials. There are different grades of wood (generally plywood) and MDF, poarticle board or other composites. I've had plenty of plywood around here for home and school projects. In fact, there is a sheet sitting under concrete blocks on my driveway because it had some serious warping issues. Plywood is very vulnerable to warping. I can also tell you that in the two years since I had my cabinets installed, I have had several water issues -- my plumber didn't connect the prep sink properly. I had a leak inside the cabinet. Even though I mopped it up and thought I caught it fairly quickly, the bottom of the cabinet bubbled in places. No -- it wasn't MDF or particle board. This was inside my all wood Woodmode cabients on the island. On the other hand, I had water run through the pan of my rangetop and down into the cabinet belwo when someone turned their back on the new and fast flowing potfiller. I was sure there would be a problem, but you would never know. Similarly, the main sink and faucet were also not connected properly (the plumber was the source of the bigger pains in my remodel). I have had water in the bottom of that cabinet at least three times before everything was caught and hopefully fixed. No problems there either. Both the rangetop and main sink cabinets are Brookhaven. Another thing -- my KD ordered the cabinets on the end of each run with wood sides -- not because they wood was better but because she wanted to assure that the finish was the same on the ends as on the front (I have seen the two materials with the same finish and they do look different). Overall construction and finish should be more important that generic terms like "wood" or "MDF". I have heard of Crystal here but don't know anything about them personally. I don't get the imprssion that they are on par with Brookhaven though. If Brookhaven and Kraftmaid are within a few hundred dollars, I have no doubt that I would pick Brookhaven -- for the finish (which also has a lot to do with how well your cabinets last over the years), the added inch of depth and the overall quality. Plus, you have the Woodmode company behind you if you have any problems.

Hiding a 6 inch filler on a Wood-Mode cabinet

The good news is that the kitchen designer is going to see about getting a beadboard panel to cover the whole cabinet side. We discussed putting on a chamford edge on the front side of the panel. To make sure it fits, she says that she'll order it slightly longer than required and then have someone scribe it in. We are hopeful that the new "someone" doing the scribing will be more skilled than the other people. Crossing fingers. Why did the 6 inch filler become necessary? Without guessing, I only know what I have been told: This cabinet and the cabinet to the right were ordered as a perimeter pair, attached to each other. My wall is not a straight wall, however. The wall sinks backwards 6 inches. So, the cabinets were placed 6 inches from the wall leaving a 6 inch gap behind both the loveseat and the left cabinet. A small wall (unplanned and unexpected, at least by me) about 21 inches high was built so that there would be something behind the loveseat and the other cabinet. There was still a gap. I was assured it would be taken care of. Finally, while the tile people were putting the tile down, the mismatched piece of 6 inch wide filler was placed and the tiling was completed in that spot very quickly. The tile job was another nightmare I won't recount here. So, that is how it happened. Why it doesn't match? I am told that it is a different batch of my paint finish and each batch can vary. Thankfully, this problem is hopefully going to be solved. I am really hopeful that everything goes as planned and the side of this cabinet is made to be presentable. mamadadapaige ~ thanks for the posting the pics. I am going to have some open shelving in my white kitchen and 2 of the pictures posted had some great ideas (I think they were in the pantryÂs). I am not much for open display, but for design reasons on both sides of the range I will have open shelves. I have been obsessing about what to use in the two spaces. Your post gives me hope that I can make it look simple but attractive.
You must be in he Boston area. I am on Cape Cod. I loved your post about the Design Center ~ showed them to my cabinet maker and he was very impressed. I hit the jackpot with him. He personally has been over seeing the whole job and was here both for the templating and installation of the granite. I have an operational kitchen (sink and range) but lots more work to be done. Again THANKS!

Thanks for posting Mama! What a great studio. I've been secretly coveting your design school adventure, thanks for sharing your experiences.
As a sidenote, I've had Woodmode cabs for 19 years and they've held up tremendously. Two doors had splits in them (I don't even know when it happened) and they are going to replace them for free. I was lucky when we built, a friend was a designer and gave us a great deal. Thank Goodness she did because I was 22 and clueless!

mamadadapaige: I think maybe your post is in response to mine requesting info on WM's white/off-white finishes. Thank you very much! Now this is probably asking too much, but by any chance did you note *which* white/off-white finishes were used in these?

For the record, my choice had been ANTIQUE WHITE, which I now suspect may be too white. I want something more subtle. The only other choice for me seems to be FRENCH VANILLA, which might be too yellow. This room has no natural light.

Don't know what to do.

Bethpen~I am in Orleans (didn't my name give it away..Nauset Beach!) I saw in another post that you were happy with your granite install. I used Ricciardi in Hyannis and could not have been happier! They got several slabs in until I found the ones that had the coloring I wanted. I have been lucky with the tradesmen so far. Hope Mama gets back here...Her posting of her "school" experiences give me lots of ideas..what eye candy!

I'm back! was a busy weekend.

I spent many a long summer day on Nauset Beach. It is THE best. I am north of Boston in Cape Ann. Bethpen, that is great that your cabinets are holding up so well. My in-laws have them in their kitchen and they are really nice, but I think they spent in the order of $60-70K on the cabinets alone. I priced them when we did our kitchen and they came in at the high end ($34K). We went with Crown Point whose original quote was about $26K (we managed to add a few items and I think the final was pushing $28K).

The Woodmode cabinets I saw the other day were really beautiful and they had been highly customized by my teacher so I got a lot of good ideas. School has been a great adventure. I am loving it. So far it isn't taking too much of a toll on anyone. I stay up late to do my homework so that it doesn't come out of the kids time.

Angelina... I did not get the color names on those cabinets. Sorry not to be able to help with that. Is your sample on the way? When I looked at Woodmode, the dealer had a number of kitchens set up and all the door styles and colors to see. Is your dealer close enough to visit? Good luck with it. Picking the cabinet color was the hardest part for me (and made a little easier by the fact that we opted to save money by not going with a custom color... I can't even imagine the headaches that'd caused).

Mama~I go to Nauset every day in season..helps that I have 7 grandchildren ages 3 to 20 and they all love the beaches here! Yes, I am a senior on this forum..my friends can't understand why I am doing a new kitchen. GW is the only place I can get ideas about measurements, granite, etc. They have NO sympathy for me when they come by and see a sight like the one below!

That was last week ~ I can now cook and I have a sink but more cabinets are being made. Keep posting the pics from you classes. You home is beautiful. Thanks to all you GWs for helping me to feel I am doing the right thing!!

mamadadapaige, what do you think about your Brookhaven cabinets? Woodmode is out of my price range. Our home will be 2400 square feet plus a 1600 square feet finished basement. We will have cabinets in the kitchen, laundry room, master, jack and jill bath and full bath in the basement. The estimate for the Brookhaven cabinets is $33,000. The estimate does include several glass cabinets, and decorate accents. What do you think? Thanks!

I didn't actually use Brookhaven. Those pictures were from a showhouse I visited. I think most of the pics were of Woodmode.

I saw your other post about Kraftmaid vs. Brookhaven. I have the sense, but could be wrong, that Brookhaven would be a little better.

I think $33K for all of that cabinetry sounds good, however, there is a HUGE range of prices out there and as many on this board have found out, sometimes full custom cabinetry through a local cabinetmaker is less $$ than going through a Brookhaven, etc.

I think it is worth shopping around to a few other manufacturer's. Just as Brookhaven is semi custom to Woodmode full custom, Omega has a semi custom line... perhaps give that a look. Depending on where you are, try Plain and Fancy... they are very nice cabinets and when I was shopping were the least expensive.
