For those of you who have refinished /painted cabs with factory f

I am really hoping to get some feedback on this one. As many of you know I am planning to have our upper and lower cabinets repainted in a few weeks in an antique white color. All of the doors will be replaced using Woodmode which is the maker of our cabinets.

The uppers will be taken out and professionally refinished. The lower boxes will be refinished on site and hand painted. We have soapstone on them so taking them out also is not an option nor is spraying them on site.

After some reading, I am concerned about the durability of the lowers.

Can I get some feedback from anyone who has refinished cabinets with a factory finish and what your experience has been? And what paint you used if you have had good results. Recently I was told about Muralo Ultra.

I would love to have all of my cabinets the same color, but would rather keep my green lowers if the bottoms are not going to be durable or if they are going to look very different with the techniques used. Thank you all so much. You have been very patient with me with all of my questions..

So let me see if I have this correct, woodmode is going to send you all new doors drawer heads and moldings presumable in white. Than you are going to have someone local finish the uppers in there shop and the lowers in your house.
If that is in fact the case and the guy who is doing it is good and if he is spraying woodmodes material you should be ok. If he is brush applying youÃ¯Â¿Â½re in trouble as there will be a distinct difference between that and the new doors.

This is one of those things again where you could get several bids for the job and end up with several different opinions on which way is best. Every painter has their own way. Spraying the boxes on site is very common, though I would consider just brushing them if they are oak. Because oak has such deep grain, it is very easy to achieve a sprayed like finish even with a brush....the grain makes the brush marks pretty hard to see. Of course, you cannot brush lacquer though. The lacqeur smell will linger for 2-3 weeks, depending on how much ventilation you have. Some guys have gadgets they set in windows to blow all the fumes outside. IMO it's not worth it. I don't think you are gaining durability and most lacquers will yellow over time. If somebody is saying lacquer will give them a factory finish but latex will not, then I would guess they haven't sprayed much latex. This makes sense because some guys are just lacquer guys and don't really think that any of the modern day waterbornes/acrylics are as good, so they never learned how to use them.

huh. That would bug me. My sister had a custom kitchen and the mitres were just not good. They remade all the doors. I don't think your rails and stiles are joined properly. It looks like they hoped paint would fill it in. As for the panels, it looks like the same thing. Many wood doors are configured so there's some tiny play between the frame of the door and the panel. To compensate for wood's expansion and contraction. When that small gap gets partially full of paint, I think it looks badly done. I'd just tell them you're not happy with the joinery that just isn't. Let them talk and use the handiest tool of all: silence. Then repeat your statement and ask how they're going to fix them. Custom cabinetry is crazy expensive. You shouldn't have anything like this to notice, IMHO.

We purchased a 1989 Cape that had been untouched since building. The layout and number of closets are fantastic! The adundance of draperies, mismatched floors, and the kitchen were AWFUL. Draperies were easy to lose, floors are slowly getting done, and the kitchen - well, it will take years to save for a full reno, but a coat of paint is a miracle worker! 1) Do you have any regrets Absolutely not! It made the space so much brighter and cleaner. 2) What did you paint - crown molding, kitchen cabinets, baseboards, door frames, doors only? Base cabs, upper cabs, beadboad on the back of the peninsula, beadboard wainscoting around the room, door frames, and a closet door. 3) What color or kind of paint did you use? Benjamin Moore Advance in White Heron. I discovered I adore the Advance paint. It self-levels, filling in pores and grain lines. It's not as workable as oil, but it's very different than acrylic wall paint! 4) What would you have done differently I thought I'd save some time and mess by NOT sanding the frames between coats. I did sand the doors. You CAN see a difference, but only when you open a door. The sanded door fronts are very smooth - the grain nearly disappeared. 5) Where did you start? i.e. finish a specific room and then move on, baseboards, crown molding, doors The kitchen was the focus, but now, we have some "spare" cabinets that were relocated to the laundry room. I plan to paint them aqua. I can't wait to buy more Advance! 6) What made the biggest impact Color. The original kitchen is fairly large - about 13x20, with half as the working kitchen and half as a seating area. The original counter is a rich blue-green Corian - and there's a lot of it! The original floors are unsealed whitish tile with white grout. The golden cabinets became white and I painted the room to match the counters (for now). From green and orange and beige and dirty gray floors, to crisp green and white - such a transformation. 7) How long did you devote to the project About 3 weeks, working 4-5 hours over 3-5 days a week. I had to clean everything with TSP, then sand everything (someone re-poly'ed the cabs to shiny them up for sale - ugh!). Two coats primer, two coats paint, touchups, sanding between each coat. Not to mention, I also painted the interiors of the uppers, as I still plan to buy glass front doors for those. 8) Any other comments you think are relevant I refinish furniture as a hobby - I love to see wood grain and bring an old piece back to it's original beauty. But I've become a white kitchen convert. It's SO EASY to keep it clean! The cure time is a full month, but 2 years have passed, and it still looks perfect.

I've had both: in a previous house I painted our cabinets (I really spent my time doing the prep and painting) and in this house we have a catalyzed lacquer finish. Our cabinets were made by a local custom cabinetmaker (who had the cabinets painted) and they have a low sheen (I didn't want any gloss). Maybe it's a satin finish? Anyway, so it's funny, because in the short time we've had this kitchen we've had a number of dings, all by the appliance installers and floor crew! None by my children, my pets, my husband or myself. Go figure. The cabinetmaker gave us touch-up paint for the dings but I haven't touched them up yet. They're small and I have to really look for them, plus I'm lazy. In the kitchen where I painted, even though I did a good job there were dings, and those were from us (just my husband and me -- hadn't had children yet). But you know what? That was back in 2001 and paints have changed a lot since then! If I had to do it now, I think I'd go with Benjamin Moore Impervo or Cabinet Coat. Have you seen pirula's kitchen? She hand painted her kitchens and has written that she's had no problems with the paint holding up. Or bayareafrancy's in-progress (of being painted) kitchen? She's using the BM Impervo, and it's painting like a dream. We have wainscoting and trim which is painted with the BM Impervo and I can tell you how terrifically well it holds up to scrubbing! No burnishing -- it's amazing. I have sticky fingered children, plus my youngest likes to draw with chalk / pens (when I'm not looking, that is) and again, it comes off the BM Impervo painted surfaces just like that! But I have a harder time getting it off the catalyzed lacquer finished cabinetry. Anyway, so based on my experiences, I think both can be really durable, but with one you get a "hand made" appearance (paint), and with the other, you get a really smooth, even finish. It depends on what you're ultimately after for your kitchen.

rggrrbrg- the upper cabinet boxes will be sprayed with paint from Woodmode in the antique white color and all new doors and drawer fronts will come directly from Woodmode. The lower frames will be finished on site. The paint will be color matched and the lower frames brush painted. Hope this makes sense. All of the doors and drawer fronts will be consistent.

I have factory finished painted cabinets and have been very happy with the finish. I wipe them often as they are creamy white and they have held up very well.
Because I live in Ca I especially did not want an onsite finish.

I''ve also used Fine Paints of Europe for my mom' s remodel. Having a fine painter is essential, but that is a topic for another forum. The cabinets are white, and still look great after 8 years. Almost all family holidays are held in her kitchen, so lots of use. We were able at that time to get oil based paint in small cans.
Living in California, environmental concerns outweigh great paint jobs, however, as oil based paints will do a better finish IMO, but are hard to come by now.
If you live elsewhere, it may be available to you, as some retailers can color match, which we have done for house painting in the past.

Brushing or rolling on the paint will NOT have the same sheen and look as sprayed on paint. However, if you have full overlay cabinets, the only time that you will even see the frames is with the doors open, so your comfort level with that is a judgement call. However, your painter should be perfectly comfortable using an HVLP spray gun on site. It has very little overspray, and you'd only need to mask off the counters and adjacent walls and turn off anything that moves air like ceiling fans or AC's. The plastic at the entrances is more to keep out people and keep in the bit of fumes than it is to prevent garbage in the finish. It's not a big deal to do HVLP, and it's what I would expect from a pro rather than a brush job. For the uppers too. I wouldn't spend the extra money on removing them for shop spraying if the room is plasticed off properly to do the lowers. Leave all of the boxes in place and just move the appliances out of the room for a temp kitchen, and make the whole kitchen a spray booth. If he doesn't own a portable air compressor, then it's time to invest in one!
