Please help me choose tile and counter for modern bath
Comments (9)I see your point, writersblock. My shower and toilet are in a separate room from the vanity, although there is visibility between the 2 areas when the pocket door is open. The vanity area would have the counter and ledge in Azul Macaubas and the plain gray field tile on the floor. I wanted to bring a little bit of blue accent into the shower so that that room is not just solid gray floor and walls. I need a small tile for the shower floor, and the Via Tornabuoni does not come in small sizes. I was thinking of doing the shower floor like this, with Via Tornabuoni field tiles making up the outside border and mosaic in the middle. Comments (29)Fwiw, I just mixed faux-marble quartz (Lagoon) with a Carrera backsplash and at least in it's pre-grouted state, I'm really happy. It was hard for me to find a backsplash that worked well with the grey-ish tones of the Lagoon, mostly because my cabinets are painted taupe. Anything that "matched" the cabinets seemed too brownish for the counters. The Carrera blends the two perfectly. I think it also works because I wound up using a very small-scale herringbone pattern, so the patterns in the marble tiles are less pronounced. Fwiw, I don't see the calacutta tiles that the OP posted working with a greyish quartz that's similar to Lagoon, and I'd also be concerned about pattern overload with a subway tile. But having worried about the fake-next-to-real problem, I wanted to at least add my experience that it can be done. One of the prettiest kitchens on here, done by a pro, is GW user @kompy, who used a different marble subway with Lagoon counters, and it looks stunning....See MoreTalk me off the ledge...I hate my backsplash
Comments (49)I just want you to know that I'm still holding my breath. It took forever, well, three days, for the tile guy to finish with all the tile. Grouting is today. Amy, I will do pictures soon. Oh, yes, I can't wait. In fact I would have done some pre-grout photos this morning, but the lovely SF fog is back. Without lights, the kitchen looks really dull and dreary. I'm afraid the photos will just be a dark blur. I've got to say that I've learned so much from this remodel. I went into it ultra-prepared. I had all my materials. I had even hired a designer to give the final okay on everything. He was incredibly expensive, but I thought with something this new, I needed someone to make sure I was making all the right decisions. Well, once those horrible counters (yup, the designer okayed those) had to be scrapped (as well as the backsplash tile purchased to go with those, as well as all the paint colors, as well as the design concept which is now at the 11th hour having my cabinet maker do new uppers and bookshelves in wenge), I learned that kitchen remodeling is not for the faint of heart. The best decision I made was to hire a fabulous contractor. If I had it to do all over again, I probably would have skipped the designer (it cost me thousands just to have someone say okay to everything I considered). I found GW rather late in the process. I just found Houzz last week! I would have spent more time on both sites. You see, I have stepped away from the ledge. I'll post pics of the backsplash tomorrow...I hope. And I hope it is truly fabulous and perfect. And if it is not, I plan on putting things on the counter so no one will notice. Yes, I'm starting to feel that this all should work out....See MoreSecond-guessing, talk me off ledge AKA charging station in drawer?
Comments (9)Thanks, beagles! You pretty much confirmed my suspicion about a charging drawer. Scratch that idea. MamaRachel, my DH is the same way so while I like the idea of putting charging items behind a door, I wonder how well that will work IRL for us. Crazy as it may sound, I'm tempted to forgo the doored cabinet and leave that lower section open. It would be similar to these hutches: I like the division of 3 spaces below the glass doors. I'd get a simple napkin holder or basket (as shown in the pic above) for bills. lol, I found a pig napkin holder at PB! Pity I don't have a towel pig to go with it. But I kinda think DH would squash the idea of a pig napkin holder. ;-) Anyhoo, in preparation for remodeling the kitchen, we moved the filing sorting trays to the den, which is actually a good place for them to reside permanently since that's where the file drawers are. Maybe I don't need a bunch of cubbies in the kitchen hutch after all. I'd also get a decorative basket to hold items as they charge. That would put them out of sight, MOL, but accessible, a plus if the phone rings. The other option - and I need to wait for our GC to see if it's possible tomorrow - is to add a USB outlet to the 9" deep cab opposite the entry aisle from the hutch and use a shelf in that cab for a charging station. Maybe simple is the way to go. I'll talk to DH tonight and see if we can make up our minds. Thank you, everyone!...See MoreStacey Collins
