Problems with framed/inset cabinets
Comments (15)Hi Redroze, Our cabinet maker put on exposed hinges-which I really liked the look of. YES... cabinets can start to "droop". I mean, within a couple of months the doors were not square anymore-I believe it is because my contractor used the cheapest hinges a person can purchase. My husband wanted the durability of the European hinges. I really fought him on this because I like the exposed ones. In the end, now we have the European hinges by Blum. They are very practical and to be honest for all the angst I had about it, it is really not that big of a deal that they are not exposed. Maybe even a cleaner look. Bottom line... whatever hinges you get, don't get the cheap ones!...See Moreneed your help on inset cabinet hinges
Comments (8)Thank you everyone. We have a local cabinetmaker making these cabinets, but he has only done inset doors once before and used Euro hinges on them. For our inset cabinets in the dining room we want visible hinges that at least look like mortised hinges so that the cabinets look like ones that were originally in this 100 year old house. We thought it best to avoid mortised since it cannot be changed easily if there is an error. I got samples of the above hinges and the only ones that are big enough visually are the non-mortised extruded brass (the second ones) These create a 3/32 inch gap. http://www.myknobs.com/clb2581bz.html (Classic Brass) OR http://www.horton-brasses.com/products/hinges/butthinges/100 (Horton Brasses) The Horton Brasses ones are much less expensive. The only other option is some non-mortised wrapped steel from Classic Brass or Alno: They don't look as good, but leave a smaller (1/16 inch) gap. http://www.myknobs.com/clb2511bz.html (Classic Brass) http://www.hardwaresource.com/Store_ViewProducts.asp?Cat=952 (Alno) Does anyone know anything about the quality of any of these hinges? Has anyone used them?...See MoreInset cabinet hinge question
Comments (7)This looks more like the style of your hinges, but surely the price in the link can't be correct? (ETA, I read the fine print--that price is for a quantity of 50. I hope I didn't cause you to hyperventilate ;) Wrought Iron finish: PK3175TBWI Here's another listing, with the same pictures and product number, but believable prices: My kind of prices. Compared to the similar style in your link:...See Moretilt out under sink inset cabinets hinge too long for sink
Comments (5)"if I have to seal up the tilt drawer to get another inch closer. I am short ... every inch counts in my world" I have that problem also - being so short! I also planned to have my fake drawer front turned into a tilt out when my handyman changes my sink this next yr. My counter top already has the sink hole in it (obviously there's a sink in it now) so there's the possibility those inserts will be too wide (front to back) to fit - hadn't thought of that!...See Morevelodoug
