hairline cracks in Kohler Mendota cast iron tub--anyone else?
Comments (19)I would not give it up at this point. Ask the plumber to get his wholesaler into it again - they likely have more pull than a single person buying a single tub. They were willing to replace the entire tub for him, at the very least they should be willing to do what they said they'd do before. I would question the wholesaler as to whether or not this tub was actually brand new and not a return. The first thing I thought of when you said there were spider cracks around the drain is that someone had overtightened the drain (my shower base manufacturer warned me that if you get a "gorilla" for a plumber this can sometimes happen). If you're sure your plumber didn't inflict the damage, I would suspect that the tub had been installed somewhere before. Alternately the tub could have been damaged somewhere in transit - again this should be an issue the wholesaler should be able to take up with their shipper. I'm half wondering if the wholesaler didn't even take it up with kohler but rather was going to do the swap for you just like that because it's easier. Ultimately you will decide how much effort you want to want to expend to get whoever is responsible to pay for the fix. It could be the wholesaler, it could be the shipper, it could be a manufacturing defect. Everyone is going to want to pass the buck on it too, but I'd keep after the plumber and wholesaler because I think it is more likely damage than a defect. At the same time you might want to tell Kohler that you want someone out there to SEE the defect (be careful not to say the word "damage") and actually make a determination about whether it is a defect or not - because surely they can't do that over the phone. Ask to speak to a supervisor if necessary. It sucks that you are dealing with this with your brand new tub though :(....See MoreKohler enameled cast iron kitchen sink scratches
Comments (18)This is obviously an old thread that's been resurrected but figured I'd give my 2 cents anyway. I just replaced my 20 year old Kohler cast iron sink with a Kohler stainless undermount. I would have gone with another cast iron but the Kohler white was on backorder and I couldn't wait that long. My 20 year old sink was in amazing condition considering the age and abuse it took. I had ordered a special cast iron sink cleaner from Kohler themselves that worked really well at getting utensil scratches out, but we too used a grid which definitely helped. I've also been told by many pros that things aren't "made like they used to be", whether that be flooring, cabinets or cast iron sinks, mainly because of changes in EPA/green standards. The toxic chemicals that were once used to say, varnish floors or coat sinks are no more because of the health hazards they cause their workers and the VOCs/chemicals they emit....See MorePorcelain/enamel repair kit suggestion for my Kohler Cast Iron Sink?
Comments (18)Well the trim on the front of the sink won't let it slide down and the fact that the sink is deeper than the apron means it wouldn't slide forward without destroying the cabinet front. However it is in an island, it would be easiest to remove the countertop and pull it out. Of course that means pulling out the garbage disposal and faucet. Its all doable even by us (with some additional muscle for moving the countertop) just not worth it to us yet unless it gets much worse. I found a light cured acrylic surface repair kit. (It can be used on porcelain, ceramic, marble but its acrylic.) Its worth it to me to try this first especially because that's a spot that's usually covered. DH did agree with you all that we should probably go ahead and get the replacement, but we're not in a hurry to switch it out yet. We've still got lots of work ahead of us in this kitchen yet. Here's a picture of the front of the island right after the countertop went on....See MoreKohler Whitehaven with a hairline crack - buy fast, or steer clear?
Comments (8)Yes, I know what the Whitehaven is. I still say that sink is overpriced at $250. That's a rather significant flaw. And there is a very narrow market for an apron front sink. And even less of one for a damaged sink. Almost has to be someone who is doing a big remodel, not a willy-nilly 'I'd like to have a new sink' buyer. And even fewer potential buyers who are doing a big remodel and who are willing to accept an imperfect new sink 'Kohler Whitehaven' has a certain cachet around these forums. .Not so much in the real world/ average homeowner who only wants new, shiny, pretty & knows squat about brands. I think it likely, as you said, that the seller got a warranty replacement from Kohler and now they are left with a flawed sink/ 130# disposal problem....See MoreA O'Brien
