Help please, I am struggling with oven cab size

Hi everyone,

We just met with a cabinet maker that uses Kitchen Craft line. We are using an Elux wave wall oven and a Gaggenau combi-steam oven. Both ovens are to be installed side by side. We had planned on a 30 inch frameless cabinet for the Elux Wave oven and a 27 inch frameless cabinet for the 27 older Gaggenau combi-steam (model number ED 231-610). We had allowed for a one inch filler in between the ovens.

The cabinet maker told us he would recommend a 33 inch cabinet for the 30 inch Elux oven and 30 cabinet for the 27 inch Gaggenau steam oven. Problem is we don't have the extra inches to spare.

I realize from reading older posts that we should be okay with a 30 inch Elux installed in a 30 inch frameless cabinet, but wondered about the 27 inch Gaggenau given it was designed for a European market so may not correspond with North American cabinet sizes. The manuals of these ovens do not specify what minimum size cabinets are needed.

Are there any owners of the Gaggenau Combi steam 27 inch that can weigh in on the width of cabinet needed. What about the Elux Wave oven?

The install instructions for the Elux oven say minimum cabinet width is 30-1/8".

The 27" combi has been discontinued. So if you ever have to replace it you will have to choose a 24" or a 30" (same cavity size inside). If you replace it with the 24", you have a gap on each side.

So I would definitely put the combi in a 30" cabinet rather than 27".

My 27" combi was in a 27" cabinet. You will need to find the specs because your cabinetmaker needs to know the cutout size not just the cabinet size.

Too bad you can't stack these ovens somewhere.

So, let's say you turn the corner again with base cabs. Could the oven stack be on the end of that leg with the cooktop to the right of it or even in the corner? Is that wall 7'5" to the corner of the other cabinets or to the wall? Honestly and amazingly... every inch matters which is why it's so important to get the dimensions of the room exact on graph paper. I had lots of ideas about my kitchen that when I really got to the inches of it... couldn't make it work the way that I envisioned. I went through oh, so much graph paper. My gut feeling is that no matter if you turn the corner or not, that island is too long. And especially so if you turn the corner with cabs again, (which might be a good answer to some of your appliance placement issues.) I read that the architect thinks it's a 'cleaner' look without that, but it might be borking the functionality... hence your title, right? :) As it is drawn now, you've got a real pinch point between the end of the island where you want your stool and the end of the table and chairs by the sliding door. But, I'm going by what may be inexact drawings so I could be all wet on this.

Slate is pretty cool - we just purchased a house with 100-year-old slate countertops in the butler's pantry. They have gotten substantial use over the years as the primary food preparation spot, and they look great. We don't seal them, for what it's worth, and they don't stain. Don't know if that's because they're so old they have accumulated sufficient "patina"? We put hot pots on them all the time with no adverse effects. They do have a few small chips, but it's very livable. (I love the softer texture -- but then, I really dislike granite, so take that into account.) In fact I thought these counters were soapstone the first 6 months we lived here, until I saw the Monson Slate label on the bottom of them. For me, the biggest consideration is actually about the dark color: I find it really hard to keep them looking clean, because they show the slightest fleck and crumb. They're like a dark floor. In that sense, a soapstone with its mottling and veining might be preferable to the matte black/gray/green? Get some samples and test, test, test!

Thanks for the opinions everyone. There are times when I just need someone else to make a decision for me, and this time it was DH. He didn't want to be responsible for yet another project on this house (putting all the cabinets together) when we have so many other things we're doing ourselves, and I know I couldn't put the cabinets together myself, so the decision was made for me. We'll be doing the custom Amish cabinets. I spent most of the weekend drafting a letter to them with all my concerns and notes and measurements and pictures and templates. I'm sure they're going to just love getting that package. I just have to sit back now and trust that they do a good job, and tell myself to be happy with whatever it is I get and stop comparing it to the look of IKEA, because there is no comparison between framed and frameless cabinets (at least in my mind). I may get some IKEA cabs down the road for our laundry room, just to show DH how nice they really are (he's never seen them) and to satisfy my IKEA buying urge, but that can wait a while. To answer some questions, it was between only those two decisions because I've priced other brand semi-custom cabinets and the prices always exceeded those of the Amish guys. The only cabinets that were cheaper were IKEA and junk, so there were really only two choices. And no, it wasn't Friese cabinets, although maybe I should check with them too. ;-) I'm sure if the IKEA was closer or the one near us was open already this decision would be harder, but since I've never assembled an IKEA cabinet and DH has never seen one, the solution to go Amish seems best, for now. I very much appreciate these suggestions. You all are really helping me fine-tune this design. Do my responses below seem like good reasons to stick with my plan above? I would consider moving the DW to the end of the peninsula This would work for an average household, but as a homeschooling mother of six, I make three home-cooked meals a day. The DW is run after every meal, and a lot of it consists of pots and pans that need to be soaked before going in. you could eliminate the door on the small corner cabinet I did play with this idea, but I am concerned about the trays and cutting boards inside getting splattered from food dribbling down from the prep area above or from loading the dishwasher next to it. It is much easier to wipe down a door than to wash all the contents inside. Whatever you choose, you must have a filler on the left side. This is why the 6" cab seems better to me. It will ensure that I have standard filler size and that the counter doesn't have to touch the slider trim. I know you are looking into the blind base for the sink - I would still opt for the 30" sink base and 36" lazy susan - I think that will be a much better storage option. If I want to have my trash in a base, the only place I see room for it is under the sink, and the only way for it to fit there is if I move my large water filtration system into the corner with this blind cabinet. Though blind cabs are typically terrible storage options, used this way, this blind frees up drawer storage elsewhere that might have been eaten up with a trash pull-out. I also get very useful storage with the 18" drawer base to the right of the stove that I wouldn't get if a susan is in the corner. a corner base with adjustable staggered shelving I'd seriously consider it if a 36" one fit in either corner, but the openings on the 33" corner bases are so narrow that they are difficult to get things out and even see what is in there. Hi sjhockeyfan and thanks. Yes I read that 30 1/8 inch spec too. However, I also found an older GW thread whose posters maintained that it did not change the fact that it can go in a 30 inch oven cabinet. I can't remember why we were to not not worry about the extra 1/8 of an inch. I will have to reread to be sure.

Thanks red_lover for your help. Was your older 27 inch combi steam a Gaggenau too? Our combi steam was a heavily discounted older scratch and dent oven. I can't say we would be able to replace it when it dies. We would have to look at other steam oven brands and the smaller the better. Also, we are running out of inches and I just don't think we have the extra 3 inches to spare with the two big windows on that wall, but we will see what we can work out as you bring up an important point. We did try to find somewhere to stack the ovens, but the only spot we could find was too far out of the way. However, I love the glass cabinet as a centre focal point that we will have so, I am content with the ovens below that.

BTW, we do have the manual and there are some specs in there, but it does not say the minimum cabinet size. I will check for the cut-out size spec. We have measured the main part of the oven which appears to be just over 25 inches (likely the cut-out dimension DH reckons).

Regardless of the manufacturers specs I would recommend at least an inch on each side for air circulation and cooling. also make some provision for venting near the bottom of the oven and at the top. all electrtonics will last longer if you keep the temperature down. I would compromise almost anything else to keep the oven vented and cool.

I have a 30" Bosh benchmark double mounted in a 33" cabinet. the cabinet is 24" deep with an open back and it's pulled 33" away from the wall. The oven cavity is also vented straight up thru the top of the cabinet with two thermosast controlled fans. The fans rarely come on (thermostat is 110 deg). The highest temp i've ever measured was 112 deg. at the top of th oven. The vent fans are really overkill and not necessary for this oven. Bosch has a really good vent fan on this particular model.

The other ventalation provisions will likely keep this oven working a few years longer than a more "conventional" instaletion.

Thanks for your detailed answer. The info may help others in a similar situation. Our cabinets have long been received. They are RTA cabinets that are stored on our construction site waiting for us to be ready to assemble and install them (our project is all DIY at this point, so the second half of our build is incredibly slow). At this point, I can't remember how we solved the oven cabinet issue. We will keep your ideas in mind, but it is a done deal with cabinet sizes at this point. There will be an airspace behind the units as the oven cabinet sits proud and is deeper than required by the ovens.
