Nespresso Vertuoline - any owners out there?

Hi,
After reading all the posts about the Nespresso a while back, I decided to buy the Pixie and aero latte, thinking I would use it once in a while. Fast forward six months and i am hooked on it! The problem I am having though is that with the frother, the pixie, the regular drip pot and a toaster all on the same small countertop - I feel like I live in a small appliance showroom! I am thinking that maybe I should have got the Vertoline instead, and then i could do away with the drip pot. Does anyone have the Vertuoline who would be willing to share their review of it with me? Thank you!

I bought a Pixie last November during a sale and every day at 3:00 I stop whatever I'm doing for my cappuccino ceremony. My Pixie is nestled in a corner, out of the way. It's really just a little guy. My frother, without which I'm nothing, does not live on the counter. It's either drip drying in my rack or in the pantry.

Originally I bought a Citiz with the on-board frother. It simply had too big of a footprint and I exchanged it for my Pixie. Much better solution for a small kitchen.

Also, get the frother with the handle, not the one without, which can slip in your grasp.

I'm totally in love with my Pixie.

Bitter is usually too long of extraction so try reducing your extraction time. Can you adjust the grind & tamp pressure? Generally you want a grind+tamp that results in about 9-12 seconds from initial pressure to espresso first coming out and then 20-25 seconds of pour for a total extraction time of 30-35 seconds. These all vary by bean, roast and batch so if you cannot adjust them then finding a bean & roast that most often results in these might be your only option. Keep in mind that these Miele machines do not maintain the pressures and temperatures of regular espresso machines nor do they use a proper tamped puck so it's difficult/impossible to get a good shot from them. For a semi-automatic a Breville Oracle (regular or touch) is a better option.

Even Herb Caen mentioned it, I believe; the Peet's French was highly coveted stuff. We were all hoping his first store would be in SF.....sigh. Aliceinmd, interesting that your recipe uses salt. I used to work in a big hotel in Chicago way back when, and one of the waiters was known for making the best coffee of anyone. I watched him one day and he salted the coffee grounds before turning on the big urn percolator. Much later when "food science" started to become popular, I read that salt offsets bitterness and thought, "Aha, that's why he did that!" Intriguingly enough, according to several articles (NYTimes, Serious Eats) they still don't know quite how salt works to offset bitterness (whether the salt somehow disrupts the bitter receptors on the tongue or whether itÃ¢ÂÂs some sort of post-processing by the brain)! I have Caesarstone Honed Pebble in my kitchen and one bathroom. I also have CS Raven in one bathroom. The Raven has been in for 6 mths, the Pebble for 4 mths. I love both. I will say the Raven shows water marks much more than the Pebble. Probably b/c it's a darker color?? Not sure. They wipe up easily but in a bathroom who wipes up the water spots all the time? Not us anyway. Oldryder is right, the honed finish does show fingerprints and oil compared to the polished finish of the Raven but they easily wipe away. Much easier than I expected them to when I tried on the samples I had. My guess is it's harder to wipe up on the small sample pieces as efficiently. A quick wipe with a sponge (which probably has some soap on it even if it's been wrung out) usually removes them, and if they are really greasy (probably 10% of the time) it might take a second wipe or some soap and a little scrubbing. Nothing over the top. And it's not like the fingerprints are glaringly obvious. I usually notice them if I look at the counter from an angle, or I sometimes catch them if the light is right. I kind of like that they show up, as it reminds me I should've wiped that section of counter. Fingerprints occur mainly on the edges of the island. Makes sense as people come in and lean on it all the time compared to the rest of the counter area. So if you like the feel and look of a honed finish, go for it. Don't be scared off by the "horror" stories of a honed finish. As for hot things, I had no idea about anything like toasters or coffee makers being a concern. I only knew about hot pans, which I use trivets for, or set on the stove. I've used the toaster almost every day and never had an issue. And I have an espresso machine on the counter at all times and no problem there. I know it's been fine b/c we've had to move it a few times as our kitchen isn't quite done and the counter under it looks pristine. As for chips, none so far, but I haven't had my counters that long.

I'm not sure I understand as it looks like you have HVAC on the other wall there. But you have done such beautiful things in that house, I'm sure your vision for that will look great. As for Nespresso placement, I don't have one so I don't know how they work but maybe this will help give you some ideas. We are big coffee/tea drinkers and I didn't want all that clutter in my kitchen. I have a small kitchen and already have enough countertop clutter. My laundry room is large and also has my pantry cabinets. It's right next to my kitchen, like where your hall is. Of course, your laundry room is just another couple of steps so either would be similar distance as I walk from my kitchen to laundry/pantry. Anyway..... I have a stretch of counter and some cabinet space in that laundry/pantry room devoted to coffee/tea items, some snack making like the hot-air popcorn popper, and my Blendtec blender for smoothies, sorbets, etc. We make our coffee in a French press and I have a electric kettle to heat up the water. It holds enough for two pots of coffee or one pot plus tea water. So, once a day or so I take the kettle into the kitchen to fill with water at the sink and then the rest can be done in the laundry room. I take the blender jar into the kitchen to add water. It's only a few extra steps and worth every step to keep that clutter out of my kitchen. I'm guessing you could do something similar to that, right? Maybe have a pitcher you fill with water to refill the Nespresso so you only have to go to the sink for water once in awhile and not every time you make one? I do plan on someday having a sink in the laundry room to make this a little more convenient but, really, those few extra step aren't a big deal to me so no hurry on putting in the sink. Another option that might work well for you is to put a roll-out shelf on one of the shelves in the tall cabinet to the left of your fridge. So you could roll a shelf out with the Nespresso on it and then after you are done using it and it is no longer steaming, roll the shelf back into the cabinet. We have a Vertuoline and love it.

Previously, we were Keurig owners. We loved the convenience of it (we drink varying amounts of coffee at different times of day, so making a big pot at once doesn't work for us). However, we had grown disenchanted with the quality of both the coffee and the machine itself. The Vertuoline got my attention, and one day in Williams-Sonoma, I made a cup of coffee. It blew me away how much better it was than the Keurig. My husband wasn't convinced, but when a great deal came up (20% off plus $75 credit for pods), I bought it. Made my husband a cup, and he was hooked.

If you drink a lot of coffee each day, it can be quite expensive (coffee pods are 95 cents each, espresso pods 75 cents). For the way we drink coffee, though, plus having the option of espresso, it's worth it for us.

linelle - I have the pixie and the frothed and love them both. my quandary is the counter space I am taking up with that right next to the "Regular" coffee pot and toaster. I have cords up the wazoo (had to put a power strip there so that 4 items can go into 2 slots!) on top of making that section feel so crowded. It is driving me crazy - but I can't imagine not having my cappuccinos now!

I was hoping there was a miracle solution that could combine at least two of the appliances! If it was just me I would do away with the regular coffee in general after getting hooked on my pixie - but DH prefers the "regular" coffee. :( I considered separating them onto different counters, but then I have to do a back and forth for the cups / spoons/ etc.

jillies01, I also have a regular drip coffee maker. As much as I love my Nespresso in the afternoon, in the morning I like a couple of large mugs of brewed coffee with 1/2&1/2. My Pixie lives next to my MW where I happened to have a free outlet. The frother base lives down by my toaster, which is in my general prep area. It really doesn't matter to me that they are separated by a few steps. I have it all figured out.

The foam drives me wild. :)

linelle - thank you for the additional detail on location - I guess I am making more of an issue out of it then it has to be :) I am going to try separating them and see if I can work it out! I blame this all on Gardenweb - would have never even considered buying one in the first place without having read all the threads on them! :)

bowbat - do you think the coffee is hot enough from the virtuoline? The one thing I keep reading is that it isn't as hot as keurigs or normal coffee pots.

DH and I tried the Nespresso Virtuoline Evoluo at WS yesterday and it blows away our Keurig.

I love that the machines now make a full cup of coffee with bigger pods.

I think BBB will have the best deal with a 20% coupon.

We pulled the trigger on a Nespresso Virtuoline- bought one at Sur La Table with a 20% discount coupon.

We got the bundle with an Aeroccino.

I'm in love. Ensorcelled.

We totally didn't need it and have most other means of coffee makers, but this splurge is delightful.

Bye bye, Keurig.
