Fitting cabinets under a wood beam ceiling???
Comments (9)Thanks so much for all the replies! Redhead, the funny thing is that I do like stopping short of the beams for some of the furniture pieces we have. As you said, it does highlight the ceiling itself. But in the kitchen it drives me crazy because no matter what, junk gets shoved up there and the tops get horribly, filthy dusty. Yuck. Lalitha do you have a picture of your cabinets? I would love to see what going up to the beam would look like! I am leaning towards that solution right now, but still a bit on the fence. Countrygirl thanks for chipping in! Your new kitchen has such a lovely space, and I am hugely jealous of your beautiful window. PS. - I agree with you that staining your cabinets would look gorgeous with your new soapstone. I think the workers reluctance is due to oak grain being so hard to cover unless you take several time-consuming steps. But I would definitely paint the cabinets too. I am flirting with the idea for mine, too, but I love stained alder. Plus it gives me a direction for when we update the kitchen twenty years after this reno! Lavender lass, good to hear from you! The storage issue is a factor, as I can't reach up there too easily, but I plan on having a little step stool anyway so should not be a concern. And if stuff is going to be shoved up there anyway, I might as well make sure it is pretty and protected from dust - or fill up the space with display items. So I am still on the fence... I would LIKE to go to the ceiling, mainly because I would never have to clean the cabinet top. How's that for shallow reasons :)? It gives me enough clearance to use 15" cabinets on top of the upper cabs, which is nice. Also, I do like the look - up close. The problem is that as soon as I walk five feet away, I can't see a whole lot of anything between the beams. So I am scared of paying extra for something that isn't actually seen very much. Going to the bottom of the beams, then adding some molding, sounds like the better idea - but then it would be best to do extra-tall cabinets and just glass in the top part. Hmmm... That may be the way to go then????...See MoreNew refrigerators too tall
Comments (7)Basically, you've got four options: * if you've got an actual cabinet above the fridge, you may be able to have the cabinet section removed to trim the box/carcass and doors to give a couple more inches clearance; * if you have adjoining cabinets and space above them, you may be able to detach the over-fridge cabinet from the wall and the side cabinets and remount it couple of inches higher. (Might or might not look odd, depending on you kitchen); * you may be able to simply extract the over-fridge cabinet, patch the wall and maybe add some open shelving; * or you may be able do do something decoratively creative as gibby did. Something I discovered when I bought my fridge three years ago: the fridge cases are not necessarily taller -- it may be just the doors and the hinge assemblies at the very front that that stick up higher and cause problems with cabinet doors in older kitchens. (Seems like a decade ago, a cabal of designers decreed that this should be so.) I discovered that I actually could fit my new fridge into the old space --- I just would not have been able to open the cabinet doors enough for the space to be useful. This is something to consider if you do not mind turning your cabinets into dressed-up spacers. (I need the cabinet space and bumping the cabinet up a couple of inches worked fine in my old house kitchen but might not work for yours.) Also, if you haven't tried the the Kitchens forum, you might find some advice over there, as well....See MoreI need help-- Ikea cabinet over refrigerator doesn't fit!
Comments (13)Here are directions to turn a narrow upper into a horizontal cabinet like xonatxo has suggested. They've used an 18" cabinet to fit between counter and uppers. Not sure IKEA has a 12" x 30" tall upper, but plans for Cool IKEA hack nonetheless. https://inspiredkitchendesign.com/ikea-kitchen-hack-cabinet-many-uses/...See MoreHelp Refrigerator Doesn’t fit!
Comments (55)If it is as it appears from the picture the face frame/filler on either side is not flush with the cabinet boxes on either side but offset into the opening creating a smaller opening than the boxes themselves then this can be trimmed in place by removing the doors and using a small hand-held trim router and straight edge set up. The last tiny bit at the top will have to be cleaned up with a sharp chisel. Someone with moderate skills can do this. Attaching the straight edge is the only tricky part but it could be fastened to the floor with a block, clamped above, strong double sided tape or some other way depending on whats behind there. Taking this apart will create a mess and will effect the cabinet above. This was everything stays intact. I know I could do this I build cabinets everyday but it's not that difficult....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
