It looks a lot like my white oak floors. You might cross this with Woodworking--lots of wood experts there.

Can you post a clearer, closer picture? It looks like rustic grade maple to me. Not oak.

Yup-need more pictures of the floor from directly overhead of a few different areas. Doesn't look like oak, though.

I was going to say maple too. We have white oak and that's a far cry from ours---but we also have quarter-sawn boards, which will have a different look from other cuts. Still, all oak is pretty grainy, and it looks like you have some clearer stretches there, which would suggest something more closed grain like maple or maybe birch. But a closer picture would definitely help---could be that some of that is the camera playing tricks, especially if four flooring contractors think it's oak.

Do you have a flooring place that will let you bring samples of woods home? That might be the best way to get a good match.

It looks like poplar wood to me.

LOL. Well... Here are some more pictures, my camera cord was inhaled by the cat, so I can't post any new pics. But.... I do know that the previous owner bought the house from a builder, back in 1967 and "thought she chose" oak floors, so we couldn't get any info out of her. I thought the same thing originally "Are we sure it's oak?" but after the flooring people came in, I subscribed to the theory. Here are the only pics I have... I am sure it won't help! But thanks for your thoughts nonetheless!

Can't tell you what kind of wood you have but here's a few pictures of our Bellawood select grade white oak hardwood floors we just installed. Maybe it will help.

Looks like red oak.

Hickory

I believe it is Hickory.
Hickory can be similar to oak in color but it does not
have the intese grain and layers that Oak has. Variations
in the grade of hickory can show different looking floors.
So if you do a search for Hickory on the web you might
see some far lighter or darker looks.

Hickory flooring is somewhat of a mixture of woods.
If you notice you will have some light pieces and some
dark. That may be because you have different types of
hicorky. True hickory and or Pecan hickory, Chinese
Hickory, sand Hickory, pignut hickory, shag hickory,
.... they can all show different color variation.

Hickory is a hard wood. Really! It is hard to sand but
it is a good quality wood that will last forever. Hickory
used to be used to make baseball bats, canes, tool handles
and anything that needed to be bowed. It can be
flexible but still really strong. A great floor!

Countryplank.com and wideplankflooring.com have good pictures of graining of several species of wood and of a couple grades of each species. Your floor might be hickory; it could also be one of the country or rustic grades of maple or ash (less likely)or even oak. Maple is the easiest to determine. There can be lots of color variation but the graining of maple is very small and tight. Oak has the greatest graining-noticeable even if the boards are not stained. Ash graining can be similar to oak but it much less prominent. Hickory has boards that are often divided into light and dark wood along the length of the board.

If it is oak-it's probably red oak. Red oak ages to a more golden color while white oak is a grayish tan.

Looks exactly like my floors, which I am told are red oak from the 50s/60s.

It looks just like my brother's character grade red oak floors
from the 60's. The character grade will show more variation in color than the premium grade of red oak which is what is probably throwing you off.

Oak has unmistakable large pores. Need a closeup to see the pores better, like the one above. But this floor does not look like oak. I would guess this is birch.

it *is* oak. It's a character or 'natural' grade which is why you have more color and grain variation. I honestly can't tell if it is red or white oak. If you are able to lift your vents you may be able to tell in an un-sanded area. The red will be more pink and the white will have a very slight green tint to it. Of course each boards color can vary widely too.

(I sold and designed hardwood floors----it can be really tricky)
