My only question is- do you really need or want a 2nd frig...? That to me would be a waste of space for the way *I* live....

Also, just a thought but I did a double oven with the top oven being a GE Advantium (it's a microwave and also an oven)...so I didn't need to waste more space with a microwave since I knew I wanted a double oven e/t I won't use it much...

We also didn't add a rreal pantry (as a matter of fact, took it out)...but we are lucky bc right behind the kitchen is a large corner closer that I'm using as a pantry..just something I thought about for resale only...since now it's empty :)

I'd trade a builtin fridge for a bigger one and forget the undercounter one...But I can't remember your layout to know if the UC fridge is a 'necessity,' like if your island blocks the path to the bigger fridge or something.

It's hard for me to say if you need a 36" range over a 30". That depends on pan sizes, cooking style, and what ranges you're looking at because of different burner configurations. For what you give up to have the UC oven, I'd rather have a dbl oven and cooktop, so you get the storage under the cooktop, and both ovens share the same cabinet width. I love having my pots and pans right under my rangetop. But, again, I don't know if you have the wall space.

Pantry space is WONderful. My pantry is only 4' wide x 3 1/2' deep and I love it. It takes a lot of pressure off the kitchen. It wouldn't have to be that deep, but the width and ability to put big and extra things, including on the floor if necessary, is nice (rather than having a pantry cabinet).

I gave up on undercounter fridge just for that reason. I held onto the 36" range, and I have an absolutely ridiculous number of ovens (I use them, but probably could have been fine with two, one being the advantium). My prep sink also takes up valuable storage, but is a necessity, and is used at least as much as the main sink. I agree with rhome, my pantry is one of my favorite things, and it is flexible space, so I can rearrange as needed, for new or different uses. Good appliances that you use often are a joy, and 6" here or there may not make a lot of difference wrt storage. You can gain a lot if it's possible to lose the little fridge. If not, consider pantry storage.

My kitchen was, and still is, 14 x 10 -- very medium. I didn't add any new appliances. My relatively small changes -- traded a smallish (27", I think) wall oven + cooktop for a 36" range, traded an apt sized (about 15 CF) fridge for a 20 CF fridge, and traded a 30" double bowl sink for a 30" single bowl -- feel like a lot to me. Total appliance count: 4 large/built in (fridge, range, MW, DW) + 3 small/countertop (2 food processors, toaster oven).

I gained a LOT of counter space and room for stuff. I had 22 linear feet of cabinets and ended up with 25 LF, but because the layout is smarter I have an entirely empty (so far) upper cabinet and stack of drawers in my island, and the trash is now stored in a trash pull-out cabinet rather than on the pantry floor. The biggest "problem" I'm having with the counterspace is literally one of too many choices -- do I want to prep this meal at the island, left of sink, right of sink, left of range, or right of range? I know, it's like complaining about the repair bills on a Rolls :)

Finally, and I know I'm going to get attacked for this, additional sinks/fridges/ovens make sense in a multi-cook or large family, but sometimes IMO they're just conspicuous consumption. I think it's really easy to get carried away with the new toys out there. I'd rather have more basic counter space and pantry space (mine is essentially a walk in closet) than have more of the toys. Again, JMO, YMMV.

Just to add to or comment on bluekit's thought, I think prep sinks have at least as much to do with location as number of workers. The perfect location can make them very valuable for a 2-person family, while a bad location can make them extraneous for a many-worker kitchen.

I guess I'd call my kitchen medium-sized. It is about 17X 15 1/2. I've got a 36" rangetop, double wall ovens and standard fridge (33" bottom freezer - I had special cabinet made to enclose it) - oh, and a DW. With our new layout I have much more storage plus tons of counter space. I gave up having a 2nd sink and built in fridge (would have to have been wider) to make it all work. I don't have much on the counters and no microwave.

My kitchen is a medium sized kitchen as well, about 15x15 with a 3" bump out bay window. I have a 55" range, 58" hood, 36" fridge freezer, microwave, trash compactor, dishwasher, main and prep sink. My warming drawer is part of the oven (the only change we made when purchasing the bigger range). I gained a huge amount of space by removing soffits for cabs to the ceiling, taking out a desk (waste of space) and doing toe kick drawers everywhere. The bay window is also built in cabinet storage. I don't have a real "pantry" either.

we have a medium size kitchen (15 x 16) and are a 2 cook family- our appliances are:

6 burner wolf rangetop
wolf double wall ovens
microwave
33 inch single bowl sink, and 10 inch prep sink
under counter beverage fridge (which is great considering how hard it is to open the sub zero doors, and most of the time people are just looking for a drink).

I was kind of into all the possible appliances and special things I could get in my new kitchen - figuring I was doing the once in a life time dream kitchen (at least to the extent possible in my house). Warming drawers, fridge drawers, wine fridge, etc. I wasn't increasing the overall kitchen footprint though so I had what I'd consider a medium space to work with.

When it came right down to it, I decided I really didn't need all those specialty appliances and could do everything I wanted or needed with a 42" built-in fridge, 27" ovens (did get double), 36" cooktop, range hood, one dishwasher and a simple cabinet depth microwave on a made to fit shelf (not built in). I do have a disposal that I don't use (septic system) and a hot water dispenser which is a luxury in my opinion but I really like it.

When I thought long and hard about it I decided I'd much rather have optimal cabinet space that I knew I would use 100% of the time vs. special appliances that I probably wouldn't get as much use out of. The special appliances remind me of weird things I've seen in original "high end" retro kitchens from the past that were popular at the time but seem really strange now - like flip down cooktops, slide out cooktops, special grilling units inside of a brick surround, etc.

I decided I just wanted an overall classic kitchen - including the kind of appliances I had in it.

I also did a bit of "do I want cabinets or do I want appliances" thinking. We didn't do a second fridge (I wanted the storage space more than I am concerned about walking to the garage if we run out of pepsi) and personally I find a little wine fridge a waste of space...but that might be because we drink wine all of the time and need more storage than a dozen bottles :oP I can always keep a couple of whites in the fridge, and we have a wine cellar in the garage...so I can grab some with my pepsi if I have to.

People ask, what would you put in a dream kitchen. Frankly, I have pretty much anything I wanted, and aside from space, I have a dream kitchen in my opinion. Now maybe a margharrita maker might have made it dreamier...but I chose to live with a blender instead. :o)

Our kitchen is approx. 13' x 16' but our 36' pantry cabinet is actually in the eating area (semi open kitchen).

The things we added during the remodel were mostly items we "knew" would be helpful and we pretty much skipped the items that "could" be useful. Our old kitchen had many faults but the biggest ones were the functional road blocks at the sink and stove. Adding a prep sink across the kitchen from the main sink and getting a 48" range solved these problems. I love the large cook top--it allows 2 of us some elbow room and makes using large stock pots and fry pans easier. I find I rarely use the 2nd larger oven---I tend to juggle items into the smaller oven since I hate using the fuel to warm up a 2nd oven.

We also have a 36" cd sxs fridge, dw, mw, toaster oven, and vent hood. We added a small freezer to another room a couple of years after the remodel because I discovered the joys of frozen foods during the 6 mo of our remodel and I wanted to decrease the number of lengthy trips to the grocery store. We have easy access to ice so we tend to chill our beverages in the glass rather than in the fridge. I don't think my knees would like an undercounter fridge.

Our kitchen is 15x16 and the Frigidaire Twins are in an alcove adjacent to the kitchen that has 7x9 open floor showing in front of them. There is a pantry pullout from Lee Valley built in next to the Twins.

The main kitchen has a Miele built in deep fat fryer next to the 36" Caldera gas cooktop with a 54" Tradewind liner hood over all of it. I have one 30"x24" antique soapstone sink and that works perfectly for us. I never had a prep sink before and they all look tiny to me so I prefer the one big sink. We have a Bosch dw . I have the Miele 30" double ovens with Perfect clean . We love them and all their bells and whistles. I have my Mom's microwave from the 70's sitting on an undercounter shelf. It works just fine so I didn't see any reason to replace. I was more interested in having the best appliances since we cook so much and DS1 and DIL are chefs and use the space too. It was a great decision for us. All kitchens are about individual choices reflecting how you use the space and how you cook.

We have 30" deep counters on one wall and 6 deep drawers under them plus all the 48" tall x 15" deep glass cabs. I have tons of empty storage and plan on leaving it that way. I don't need much I guess :) c

My kitchen is sort of medium sized. I went with a single wall oven because the only time I'd use two is during the holidays and I just can't justify using that much space for a once-a-year appliance. I have cooked Christmas dinner for 30 years with one oven....I think I will survive without it. I decided to use the space above the single wall oven for a built-in microwave, freeing up some counter space. All of my appliances are GE profile except for the dishwasher (still undecided on that) and the cooktop. The cooktop is a 36" GE Monogram and it was a bit of a splurge. I have a broan 36" rangemaster elite hood with a remote 900 cfm blower. Refrig is nothing special....GE profile. I planned on getting an undercounter refrig for beverages but scrapped the idea once I found out how much they cost!! I will put a small apartment refrig in the sunroom if I need extra beverage space. I love my granite and want to keep my countertops as clutter-free as possible, so I will have a toaster and a coffee maker and that is all. My pantry has storage space for any small appliances while they are not in use.

My kitchen is a 10'x12' horseshoe, plus an eating area. Is that medium? It is currently gutted, but I'm not changing the basic footprint or layout. The only additional appliance I'm adding is a 600cfm range vent, which will replace upper storage units at that location. I'm replacing a 30" cooktop & undercounter oven with a 36" AG range. My fridge will be a 36" CD. The DW location will be the same, but hopefully the new DW will be capable of cleaning tea mugs. The microwave will move off the counter to a shelf. One sink (33" double bowl) is plenty for me, and I have lots (probably too much) extra refrigeration capacity in my basement and garage.

Besides replacing old crappy appliances with better ones, and dated beige plywood cabs, counters & vinyl floors with colour, my aim in this reno is to install more organized, accessable storage. My new uppers will go all the way up to my 8' ceilings, all the bases will have drawers, and those two awkward corners will have interior fiittings in them so I can reach the stuff at the back. It remains to be seen how long I can keep my shiny new counters uncluttered (do I really need that toaster oven?).

While I'm usually the only cook in our 4-person household, when we entertain, everyone always congregates in the kitchen. There is room for a helper or two, but my tiny island at the open end of the 'shoe acts as a barrier to keep any wanderers out of the way.

This will be my dream kitchen. The focal points will be the new range and hood, and a new box window over the sink. I don't want any more appliances.
