Can you put laminate flooring under a kitchen island w/ legs?
Comments (3)What sylvielou said. A floating floor needs expansion space at the edges- usually covered by mopboard or quarterround molding. IF the island is fixed to the floor, you'll need to install the floor around the island, and leave an expansion gap covered with quarter round or other trim around the island. If it's a furniture-like island, it can rest on the laminate, no problem. It's just like a couch. Also, there's a maximum span for laminate that's like 30 feet. So if you have an open plan house with a large expanse of floor, there might need to be a transition strip in the middle of the room to allow sufficient room for an expansion gap. This may be ugly. Be sure to ask any installer about it....See MoreWould you put a counter height dining table in a small kitche?
Comments (9)We are empty nesters who built a lake cottage last year that will be our retirement home. We did put a counter height set in our dining area, which is open to the kitchen, and we love it. We built this house for the way that we enjoyed living, and that meant more casual gatherings than formal meals. We have an island (counter height) with a second level for bar height seating. It is adjacent to the counter height table and most often I set food and appetizers on the bar level for people to serve themselves and sit down with their plates at the table. We find most people, especially the older ones, find it easier to get up and down from the counter height chairs than regular height ones. I will grant you that it's a little jump to get up and down from BAR height chairs, but counter height, for most folks, means just sliding their butts on or off, as opposed to raising yourself (like doing squats)from seated to standing in a regular chair. I'm only 5'2" so my feet sometimes dangle from even regular height deep seated dining chairs! We chose chairs that have a rung on which you can rest your feet when seated and I find them really comfortable. It comes down to a matter of personal choice and lifestyle, but I am really happy to have gone with the counter height dining set....See MoreCan I put granite on top of the kitchen island made of ikea cabinets?
Comments (26)In most production cabinets, the back is nothing more than to close the cabinet box. A hanging rail is what will support and hold the cabinet to the wall. Perfect example is of Joe's picture, where you see the solid wood at the back of the cabinet, that he's screwed to the plywood. That cabinet doesn't have a back, just a hanging rail, and it's obviously not going anywhere. Now, whenever I do an island, I always try to use at least a 1/2" plywood panel across the back of the cabinets, then a finish panel or wainscoting. I don't do a whole lot of frameless cabinets, but I do the same on them. This adds to the rigidity of the cabinet boxes, as well as giving the finish panel something to nail onto, anywhere I want to attach it. Plus, people won't put their foot through the panel. It also makes it easy to attach corbels. If you have the room, build a knee wall behind the cabinets. Now you can attach the cabinets to a wall. Then either drywall and paint, or use finish panels to cover the knee wall....See MoreWhere to put a slide in range in a small kitchen
Comments (18)How many of you are there in your family? If more than one of you will be working in the Kitchen (cooking. prepping, cleaning up, etc.), you're going to have bottlenecks and conflicts -- unless the aisle is wide enough to accommodate two people. I'd make the aisle b/w the range wall's counter edge and the island's counter edge at least 48". Note I said counter edges, not cabinet boxes. Counters overhang cabinets by approx 1.5", making the counters 25.5" deep. Aisles are measured to/from the items that stick out the farthest into the aisle -- appliance handles, counter edges, etc. Unfortunately, most layouts done by both GCs and KDs erroneously measure box-to-box. I would not put the range directly in front of the DW. If the DW door is open, it becomes a serious safety hazard to someone working at the range, even with 48" wide aisles. Imagine taking a pot of boiling water off the range, stepping back to prepare to turn around to go to the sink... and you back into an open DW door, splashing boiling water while you strive to keep your balance....See Morerexem
