I wouldn't. One good flood and that laminate is toast. Not like wood that you can refinish. If you feel the flooring warranty is strong enough to warrant the installation, I would recommend creating a seam or a threshold like you would have between rooms anyway. That way you could at least replace the section that could potentially get damaged much easier. Laundry rooms are much like bathrooms- there is constantly water getting on the floor. If you wouldn't put it in a bathroom, I'd have a hard time advocating putting it in a laundry room(or kitchen for that matter) I understand why people use laminate but it does not seem durable in the long run. Maybe look into a special at an online consolidator like Lumber Liquidators. They often have very good deals on small end lots or other close outs on wood. There is a reason why old wood floors can last hundreds of years. FYI- I'm a designer and I've used everything from hardwood, bamboo, cork, laminates, tile, concrete, carpet and carpet tiles, even plexiglas on floors. The most similar thing to laminate I've used in real life (in a house) was a bamboo. It doesn't always wear as well as wood but it's a much more durable than a laminate. We use laminate constantly on sets (i work in the film industry) and by the end of the shoot most of the time it's in pieces, literally. I cannot tell you how many huge chunks of laminate I've seen in tatters on the stage floor. Film sets are very unforgiving but so are people and foot traffic year after year. Especially when the structure is compromised with water. Try getting a sample and putting a few drops of water on the top of it and see how quickly it swells and the press board or whatever is under the top coating comes to the surface. laughable, you'll fit 3 comfortably and 4 very very tightly as everyone's said. The chokepoint is the seat by the sink run. I agree with everyone else that 42" range/island aisle would give you some much needed room at the chokepoint. I did read what you said about trying it above, but just wanted to add one thought which is if you just tried it briefly it would naturally feel tight because it's not what you're used to. If your current island is moveable I really think it would be a worthwhile experiment to try it at 42" for a full week and reevaluate at the end of that time. I say that from experience, but the other way around. Pre-reno my aisle width was 36" which was perfect for me. I was totally used to working in it, but when we reno'd we put a range opposite a dishwasher drawer and I wanted to be able to open both fully so in the reno we budged our island back 6". Well when I first started working there post-reno it felt like bizarro world, a canyon-distance away, and I was rather regretting the change. Of course after a while it became quite natural and now I laugh to think that I was ever even remotely ruing the change. All that to say it might (?) be the same for you but in reverse. Just a thought ... feel free to ignore if you like. :-)

If you have real Brazilian cherry all through the level and the kitchen floor has maple look Pergo, I'd take out the Pergo. I'd go with a non-wood kitchen floor so that you don't have to worry about matching or clashing species. Paint the island and if you don't like it, you can replace it. The cheaper/simpler option is the one to try first...

First, without actual dimensions and a layout, we cannot say one way or the other if it's feasible in your kitchen. In general, though, ask yourself... What will the island add? Will it add functional counterspace? Or is it just something you "want" b/c you like the look of islands? Is your kitchen wide/long enough for adequate aisles around the island? If not, it can cause traffic congestion (like Flwrs_n_co discovered). This traffic congestion can be through traffic, traffic in work aisles, or space in the work aisles in general (room to work). Will the aisles be wide enough to use your appliances (refrigerator door(s), open DW, etc.)? Will the island be a "barrier island" (b/w the sink & refrigerator, b/w the range & refrigerator, or b/w the sink & range)? If it's a barrier, you will have to run around it to go to/from the zones it's between. If you want seating, remember that you need room for the 15" overhang + 45" to 48" of aisle behind the island for both seats & traffic. If there's another workspace or appliance(s) behind the island, you will need 48" to 54" for that aisle. If it's a "dead end" area with no outlet and no appliances or workspace behind it, then 36" is probably all you need behind the island for people to squeeze past. I also really wanted an island (w/seating) in my 11' wide kitchen, but I was lucky enough to find this site and have several honest folks here tell and show my how an island just wouldn't work b/c my kitchen was too narrow. I am very grateful to those people and I ended up with a kitchen (sans island) that's wonderful to work in! I never would have had that if I had insisted on an island. My DH & I still occasionally comment on how we're so glad we don't have an island!
