New construction - Kitchen Layout help please!

I'm finishing up the plans to our new home and was looking for some feedback with the kitchen layout. I cook a lot and so our family spends a good bit of time in and around the kitchen. My struggle has been the placement of the refrigerator and ovens. Take a look at the layout and let me know if you think it works or if you see a better way.

For reference the island is 5x8 and there is 4' between the range and island and 4'6" between the refrigerator and island.

I'm counting 3 ovens-a large capacity one in the range and 2 wall ovens. I'd put one of the three in butler's pantry-for those occasions when you're cooking up a storm. Are you sure about sink in island? if so, bring fridge around to part of long run-fairly close to table-maybe 15 in or so on right side for a bit ofcounter,then have more counter directly behind you when at sink-so range gets moved down closer to the corner and the 2nd oven goes over to the fridge spot closer to family room. I have a sink with counter runs just barely adequate on L and R-one of the goals will be to move the range so there is counter directly behind me. Especially with the 48 in range,I'd clear it from direct behind you. Even better in your kitchen would be range and sink on the long wall if you could place the separate oven under the counter in island...then perhaps leave fridge in the position you have it.It depends if you feel strongly about sink in island position-I'm kinda so-so about it.

That's quite similar to our kitchen layout and I totally love the workflow of it.

I like that I can have the range aisle to myself while family can get to the fridge and snacks at the perimeter without us being in each others' way. We have an extra water source at the side aisle by the fridge so that helps keep them over there where they belong. :) In your case you have water at the butler pantry along with snacks and I assume coffee, etc., which looks perfect to me!

I would move the dishwasher to the left of the sink to keep it out of your prep area.

And I don't know what all your measurements are, but if there is any way to eke an extra 12" out of the island to the right of the sink I think you'd be a lot happier with 36" there as a your prep area. Not sure if it's possible to do by taking 6" from each side (4' to fridge is enough, not sure about the other side tho). If not, could you possibly scoot the wall back a little into the pantry area?

For the overall here[it's a social floor plan-casual] I'd do a U kitchen-sink wall is the middle of the U. Reason is that people migrating in from deck and from family and dining area can use the right arm of the U as a peninsula with stools. Great spot for seating. You'd still be able to have 8 feet width inside the U it appears. Place fridge on lower wall backing up to closets...sink and range inside U-sink about where it is,maybe center the windowscape and range on wall that backs up to corridor over to the left. The island as you have it isn't desirable to me. the range on the left wall means at the peninsula you can do something more visually appealing with pendant lights/back side with panels or whatever to work with some stools and also have just a little separation from the cook's part of kitchen. this will be appreciated I think especially if the dining zone is the only one you are planning. Activities at the range with lots of counter around it will be a little more removed from the middle extremely open part of kitchen where you are suggesting it. You could plumb a small 2nd sink down on lower wall with fridge-perks to that as well.....stylish little zone with added pendant light carrying the theme from peninsula.

Since no one has mentioned it, it's not possible to put a ref right up against a corner wall that is longer than the BODY of the ref. This is because for most, but not all refrigerators, the doors are hinged in such a way that they open out to side of the ref body - like some tv units where the doors store on the outside sides of the unit when open - but ref doors just don't open that far. Generally, the ref needs to be placed anywhere from 6" to 15" away from the corner depending the exact make and model. There can be other issues. Door handles can hit (-really, eventually punch a hole into) the wall - even at just a 90 degree opening. Most refs need the doors to open more than 90 degrees for cleaning but a goodly number need the door open further to operate the drawers. Ones that can be placed right up against a corner are called fully integrated. Some refrigerator columns, some gaggenau, and a few others at a pretty steep price scale. Really not dis'in' you or JennieMer, but the location of the ref in your original drawing or Jennie's drawing really can't be done. Most people insert a utility cupboard or pullout pantry in the actual corner for this exact reason.

Welcome MamaCat21! You have a good eye for knowing what's not right in kitchen design - the architect was probably going for looks, not function - and you want function (as well as looks, I'm sure). You'll fit right in here - most of us are the same way! (The architect's kitchen would be very frustrating to work in!) Your family sounds a lot like ours and how we use our kitchen - prepping/cooking & cleaning up going on at the same time and kids wanting to be with you when you're in the kitchen. I don't know how old your children are, but they will also be learning to cook & clean up soon and adding to the mix of people working in the kitchen at the same time! Some comments: If there are more than two or three seats at an island (or peninsula), some should be "around the corner". Straight seating like the island has now is often compared to "ducks sitting in a row". It's not conducive to conversation & bonding; it's more like diner counter seating with strangers. So, I recommend at least one, if not two, seats on at least one short side. I would turn the island 90 degrees so the long side is along the range wall. How do you feel about prepping in the island? It would mean turning to get to the range, but many people are OK with it and even prefer it b/c then they can prep facing people or other rooms. Right now, with no water in the island and with it's current orientation, it's doubtful it would be of much use as a primary Prep Zone. You have your prep sink along the perimeter so you're prepping next to the range - so you may prefer prepping that way. If so, that's fine. However, you don't have enough counterspace b/w the range and prep sink. The bare minimum recommended is 36", but 42" to 48" is much better. Note that much more than 48" and it can be too much b/c of the distance b/w the sink and range. Right now, it looks like you have 24" - and I can tell you from personal experience that 24" is nowhere near enough! Do you have a draft layout of the floor the kitchen is on? It helps us see the flow of the house and the potential traffic through the kitchen. Where is the family entrance - usually a garage entrance?

Having landing space behind the fridge on an island is convenient if one has a French door fridge. I have a single door fridge, but I find the island convenient if I am laying out multiple items--packages of carrots, celery, and meat for soup. Todd, I was thinking about your 'stadium seating' at the island. Since you have a long back wall, you could put the fridge on that wall, then have two seats on the short side of the island, which would also allow you to make the aisles a little wider, and would be more conducive to conversation. Downside is that the fridge will be more visible from the dining room. I moved the hall opening back, if that is feasible.

Thanks for the input. You are totally right about moving the dishwasher to the other side and increasing the size of the island. I am having the architect add 1 foot to the island and push the wall back 6 inches to keep the 4'6" distance between the fridge and island.

good suggestions but I think we're sold on the sink in the island. The range is actually just going to be a rangetop so the only ovens will be the double ovens in the wall.
