I don't have any specific experience with any of those brands sold at HD. My dishwasher is a Bosch which I selected primarily because of the water leak feature which I thought was important given my Cork kitchen floor.

Anyway, my suggestion to you so that you don't get another model dishwasher that can have the same problem is to check www.consumeraffairs.com for recalls or other brands of dishwashers that have had similar types of problems. When I was looking for a dishwasher, I checked the Consumers Affais web site along with www.complaintsboard.com to see what dishwashers were having problems or being recalled. I found a bunch were being recalled for the potential to start fires. I definitely did not want those brands. I'm sure you'd like to avoid any further problems too given your experience.

I don't know much about Amana and Hotpoint DWs. LG's I'd probably avoid. Maytag is now owned by Whirlpool - don't know how they currently stack up but that's worth considering - Whirlpool and KA make good DWs. Another option is to consider a different model GE with a better record. My mother's apartment has a GE Profile DW and it works fine.

Back in '95 when we built, we put in a GE Profile DW and we had to replace the motor w/in 2 or 3 years. When it died again 3 or 4 of years later, we replaced it with a Maytag...and that thing was still going when we demo'd in January. We donated it to our Church for a family who couldn't afford one and as far as I know it's still going strong! (Ditto w/our GE Profile smoothtop convection range! For ranges & ovens...GE is great, in my experience!)

We now have a KA DW (not on your list) and don't like it. It appears we have to wash it on Heavy Duty for even normal loads to get the dishes clean. We've been using Normal and there is always a dish or two and some flatware that doesn't get clean. I ran it on Heavy Duty last night and for the first time everything came out clean. It still doesn't dry very well, though.

If my experience is valid for today's appliances...I'd go with a Maytag.

I am so sorry that happened to you, however, I am so glad you were home when it did. I don't even want to think what might have happened if you weren't home. I went with a Bosch which I absolutely love, love, love. I know that doesn't help. Home Depot won't special order a different brand for you? In any case, I am putting up the link to Consumer Search. They take the reviews, Consumer Reports, JD Powers, etc., and list their ratings on appliances, etc. It really helped me in chosing the appliances I have in my kitchen. Best of luck to you!

Do you have an EXPO Design Center near you? They're owned by HD. Perhaps HD might allow you to order a DW that EXPO carries if they have one you'd prefer. They may not, but it's worth it to ask! As I recall, EXPO carries:

Thanks for trying to help. We're postponing our trip to HD until tomorrow. I don't want to rush this, but at the same time, doing dishes in the sink is really getting old! Mustbnuts, you're SO right about us being lucky that we were home. I shudder the thought if we weren't and our home could've caught fire - bye bye new kitchen! Also, my PETS! Forget about the kitchen, my pets would've been trapped inside!
Karen: I am checking the complaints site that you listed. There's sure a lot of interesting information on there.
Buehl: Thanks for the thumbs up on Maytag. I will definitely be considering a Maytag, and so far, that's #1 on my list so far as what HD offers. I checked awhile back when HD offered to replace my DW the first time (long old story) and I wanted a Kitchenaid. I asked them about getting it from their sister store - Expo. They said that they couldn't (wouldn't) do that. Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the KA DW; surprising. I've heard mostly good about KA. Too bad you're experiencing the opposite. I also have checked out Consumer Search previously. It says that Kenmore, Whirlpool and Bosch are the best.

Does anyone know the relationship between brand names? I mean, is Maytag the same as Whirlpool, just a different label?

I have just come to accept that me and appliances have bad juju. I ordered a brand new Maytag washer & dryer set that was to be delivered today. They got it all unwrapped and my oldies out of the way - and the dryer wouldn't fit in our laundry closet. I am so bummed!

So - tomorrow's HD trip will not only include shopping for a new DW, but a new W/D set as well. Argggh!

I agree out of your choices, I would go with the Maytag. I also have a Bosch and didn't like it at first because the stainless didn't match my other applicances, but I listened to everyone on this forum and kept it and love it!!! I put dishes in not even rinsed and they come out sparkling clean. Never had that with my old KA dishwasher. Good Luck

You can check out applianceadvisor.com for information about the relationship between the different companies. Maytag was purchased a while ago by Whirlpool but I don't know if they've integrated their manufacturing or if Maytags are still a completely separate line.

MDB8951BWB is the Maytag that looks closest to what we have now, but it's not GE.
Anyone have experience with "steam clean" option that seems to be in all the brand new dishwashers?

Jeepers, that's scary! I've never heard of that happening before. 2 yrs ago, we bought our Maytag at the box for around 600.00 and I love love love it! Best dishwasher I've ever had. It's SS inside and out, has a sanitizer option, movable silverware bins, the top rack has two adjustable heights and it's whisper quiet. The model name is Legacy Series Quiet 300.

I have the Consumer's Kitchen issue (US version) and neither GE or Maytag perform well (not a single model in the top 25). Brother in law of a friend was pro Whirlpool but anti Maytag, however he admitted that Whirlpool has owned Maytag long enough that things should have started to improve. Consumers has a bit of a lag time - in his opinion they were reccomending Maytag when things were already going south. He advised us to stay away from LG because parts will be expensive and you will probably experience long waits for replacement parts. Having said that a couple of the LG models scored very well. Whirlpool had the fewest repairs with Maytag having the 2nd highest rate of repair. Of what you have to choose from they reccomended:

Whirlpool DU1055XTS (best buy)

Whirlpool DU1100XTP

We ended up with a Maytag (I didn't pick it) but I can't advise one way or the other as it won't de delivered until November after the cabinets go in.

Forgot to include an important fact: the brother in law is an appliance repairman not just some random guy with strong opinions about appliances.

Welp, we went to HD today. We got the washer/dryer issue taken care of (hopefully). We picked up our new stove top (induction!)- to replace the one we have. I swear, we just must have bad "ju ju" when it comes to appliances.

At any rate. I took a look at the limited selection of floor models that HD carries. What I felt that I learned about my experience, based ONLY on this trip is this:

Amana & Hotpoint, looked like junk. Of course they were super cheap, so I am sure that they fill the bill in that regard.

Maytag: Disappointingly, they too looked and felt cheap. The racks were low budget plasticy and just not what I want. They had the exact model I was looking at, except in SS, while we'll be getting black. I wouldn't get that one based on the racks alone. Wah!

GE: I am just fraidy scared to get another GE, but really, as far as quality goes (sturdy, nice looking, etc), they rated 2nd.

LG: Surprisingly, even though I've read that some folks really don't recommend LG - they were far superior in looks and sturdiness. The rack were, solid - for lack of a better word. It also had 3 racks, rather than the standard 2. There was a super short rack at the top for knives and spatulas and other long flat things. I really liked that feature. The rack folds up, or removes, if you want it to. The 2 models that they had there were pretty pricey in comparison to the others we looked at (that they had on display). They're made in Korea tho; not the good ol US of A. I'd hesitate, but only for a minute. If they were made in China - I'd say NO WAY.

We left there feeling that 2 decisions (washer/dryer and stove top) were enough for one day. I wanted to come back here and post what I found and see if anyone has any comments or opinions based on my findings today... and do some more research.
