pdw9980 ge profile dishwasher

We are looking at purchasing a new dishwasher and are interested in the GE Profile PDW9980NSS. If anyone out there has one, we would like some feedback on it. Also, two specific questions: 1.Can you disable the audible end-of-cycle signal? (ie, no "beep" when you want it quiet) 2. How is the "clean" indicator reset? (ie, does it reset when you open the door or do you reset it manually?) My concern is that it automatically resets before I've had time to empty the clean dishes. I would like to be able to manually reset it after it has been emptied (with six in the house, you never know who has opened it).

I would call ge and ask them about your specific model you are interested in. # 800-626-2000

I had a GE years ago and it was really great. Don't know anything about the newer ones but I am sure they are good also. Nothing is like the old stuff used to be though.
I saw a model from them that is 47 decibels when running so that thing should be really quiet. I have also read that they a larger water heater so it heats the water faster than most.

I would check all this out with GE.

I posted the origianl question because I am looking for user input. We have spoken with GE, but are not getting direct answers from them as they have never "used" the product. This dishwasher is 47 dB, so very quiet, but we also want to verify some of the other features before we replace a very old, but still functioning, dishwasher (We have duct tape holding the front door together, but it still cleans beautifully!).

In 40+ years of appliance work I've watched dishwashers get a bad rap for valid reasons and for things they had no control over. For the most part they are good inprovements. I have maintained the saying "you can build a dishwasher out of an erector set and plywood and still get clean / dry dishes as long as you can supply and maintain the correct water temp." Maintain is the keyThat magic number has always been 140 degrees. Mandated Energy regulations present a chalenge due to factors manufacturers can not control such as how long it takes for cold water to clear the line because water just sitting it the pipe, will cool down. No dishwasher was ever designed to heat water from cold to 140+. Average home you will loose 20 degrees from water heater to kitchen, or around 1 degree per foot of temp loss. Ever wonder how dishwashers suddenly became "Tupperware Safe." Since the early 80's dishwashers have heavily depended on water temp to dry dishes. Dishwashes that heat water but don't have a heated dry, do a great job of heating the water. There are several other factors that can cause poor drying like having much more plastic than dish dishes. We have a 580vss and love it! I know it's a different model, but in case you don't get any responses... Unless you are reading the same issues consistently, I'd take the reviews with a grain of salt. People are much more likely to post negative reviews. Ours cleans great and is unbelievably quiet. From reading here, almost any newish model has long cycle times, so if that is an issue you are reading, it will be common to many makes and models. What issues are you seeing over and over? Maybe someone can comment on that specifically.

I recently traded in my 7 yr old top of the line Bosch for the Profile. It has a much better rack system than the Bosch, including 'large bowl' movable tines. It isn't quite as quiet as the Bosch, even though the Bosch was rated at 46 decibels and the Profile at 47 decibels. It cleans much better than the Bosch and has a much sturdier feel. Can't report on reliability as I've only had it for about 2 weeks but I have had no problems into a year with my Profile double oven range, FL washer/dryer and fridge. There is enough differences in the comparison charts on the GE site. The 9980 has as added fatures over the 9200 has an extra cutlery/long items basket, the top rack has a feature whereby coffee mugs, coffee cups, and other glasses with concave bottoms (which retain water), are placed at a more prominant angle which aids in the water not being retained on their "tops" in the rack; there is a plastic cycle on the 9980 designed to be used with the special Cascade plastics cleaner to prevent tomato-based foods from staining; has the best filtering system with the CircuClean pump; digital countdown display showing minutes in the cycle left; 1-24 hour delay start; cup shelfs made with metal instead of plastic insides (guts) and there are 3 vs. two; a knife holder; all the tines in the bottom rack can be folded down for a totally flat bottom rack; 4 sets of fold town tines in the upper rack; silverware basket is splittable into 3 small sections; top rack only wash cycle; the top rack is not only adjustable at two heights, but it's also adjustable for one side to be higher than the other side (some-what like the old Hobart-style KitchenAid Superba top racks); and has GE's quietest motor and sound insulation which give you one decible more quiet operation (which isn't all that noticeable,), but that sound level of 47 dB is right up there with some European model dishwashers as far as quietness goes. I've now had a PDW9980SS for 18 months. We remodeled our kitchen and installed all new stainless steel GE Profile appliances.

The dishwasher had to be repaired for a faulty control panel immediately after installation, and 3 more times in the last 18 months for other electronic failures. The last time, it melted all the internal parts, and filled the house with smoke. If I hadn't been home, I suspect it would have started a fire. I've also read on the Internet of this happening to others. It goes into an uncontrolled drying cycle, and won't stop until it is unplugged.

GE replaced the dishwasher this morning. The brand new PDW9980 does not work! The panel will not respond. The installer said he could do nothing, and I should call GE again. So, I'm waiting for service again.

Each service call is about a week of waiting for a tech to determine that it needs a circuit board, then about 2 weeks waiting for parts. I've done dishes by hand more in the past 18 months with this dishwasher than I did in 28 years of owning other brands.

My advice would be STAY AWAY! BUY SOMETHING ELSE!

James- Have you had any problems with any of your other appliances? I am looking at new refrigerators and was thinking about GE. Maybe I should look another direction, but seems like everything you look at someone has had a problem with it. Things just aren't like they used to be.

I have had GE in my last 2 homes and had no problems. I am currently building and planning on all GE again. As with ANY product - I am sure that out of the millions they produce - a few might have problems. Frustrating I am sure - but it happens.

Tinker- My sister has always had Ge in her new homes except one she used Jenn Air and one Whirlpool. The Whirlpool she had nothing but problems for 2 years with a built in oven/micro. It would start the cleaning cycle by itself and you couldn't stop it without killing the power to it, then have to get Whirlpool out and they would replace a board in it. After the 2 years Whirlpool replaced the whole unit and the tech said they had problems with a lot of those boards. The next house she used GE again and has had no problems with any of it so 6 out of 8 homes she has used GE and been very pleased. That is why I was thinking of GE for a new Fridge but one tech told me to pass and another said No they are fine that Ge did have a problem with some boards on the fridges but they have gotten that all cleared up--so who knows. I don't want to get a lemon.
