Our solution to having fewer upper cabinets when we took down the wall on one side of our little galley kitchen was to cut back on china and glassware too. We bought some new general purpose things that we really like and gave away all of the specialized stuff. The few glasses we do have are in open shelves over the sink right next to the dishwasher.

same as doug...open shelves next to sink above dw. we cut back on everything after remodel. I just gave away the stuff I packed in boxes for the reno. Never emptied them and don't miss it :) I have empty shelves and drawers now...no plan to fill them either. c

Anyone store glasses in dish-drawer or is that just a bad idea?

There was a thread several months back about this same thing. Many people did store glasses in base drawers. Many of them used cushy cupboards padding in the bottom of the drawers to make them non-slip. Someone also used the padded shelf covering from walmart/target and had the same luck. No one complained about a lot of broken glasses, but I do thing several had soft-close drawer hardware. HTH. G

I keep mine in a drawer. I don't use cushy cupboards, my liner is wallpaper. They don't slide around. Works great.

I plan to keep all but the most fragile dishes in my dish drawers. Wine glasses and fine china will be kept in the top cabinets though.

I have upper cabinets but planning to put glasses in a dish drawer with soft close. Not sure yet how it will work since it is not completed yet.

Bdaykitchen, because doing without uppers meant a lack of concentrated storage in any particular counter area, I decided to do point-of-use storage for the dishes and split them off to different areas (fanned out from DW but mostly pretty close). Cups and cereal bowls over by the coffeemaker and refrigerator/pantry wall, water glasses close to the prep sink because no good space for them by the main one. Our island has 12" deep cabinets on its traffic side and the pantry wall is 12" deep, BTW, and those shallow shelves lend themselves nicely to dish and glass storage, although our everyday plates and hot-stuff bowls go in a drawer by the stove and table--the only ones I actually have to walk across the kitchen to put away. Hope there's an idea in there somewhere for your situation. I do love not having uppers.

Sorry, Bday. I just saw this. No pix, but point of use storage works quite nicely--EVEN with my setup with has the dishwasher inconveniently at the end of a counter--sink to right, door to outside to left with broom closet beyond, and doorless end of island in front. Most setups would have storage somewhere on both sides, and maybe across a U or in an island facing it. I did go to some trouble to find a way to fit a silverware drawer within easy reach of the DW (once both are opened) since it's such a bother to unload.

One more alternative for you to consider would be a pantry style cabinet for your glasses if it's at the end of a cabinet run, or in a place you can separate counters. I have one that is as tall as the top of the window, with a piece of granite between the top/bottom cabinet that looks like a complete wall unit. It isn't very wide, but has slide out shelves which hold a lot of glassware. (I store my Christmas plates and trays in the bottom cabinet, and it's all next to the FPDD.) The cabinet is in my ''butler's pantry'', which I like because it's near the dining room.

I have the pantry at the end of the cabinet run type of setup that Claie de luna describes too. It's close to the sink & dw as well as the fridge, and it works great.

Now that's really nice. I just bet it works great. My (shallow) pantry wall with inset fridge and coffee bar starts about 3-1/2 feet to the left of yours and I love it, but it's not nearly as convenient to the dishwasher. Love your windows, and the whole kitchen for that matter.

Thanks for your suggestions. My pantry is even further away from dishwasher. I was toying with the idea of trying to adding an upper corner cabinet at the end of the cooktop run-- maybe glass and it could match the opposite, inside corner cabinet. It doesn't show in my current layout drawing and I can't figure out how to draw it, but I will post the layout & hope you get the idea.

Love to hear your thoughts-- the glass storage issue is driving me crazy!
