Good chest freezers for basement? Ones to avoid?
Comments (14)We have a biig honkin' chest freezer in our basement. I buy in bulk from Sam's Club and the grocery store when things are on sale. I also froze and stored many meals for the remodel. I recently replaced a 40 year old chest freezer with a more energy efficient one, and consider it a 'must have' in my house. Here is the criteria I'd use when shopping: I like baskets that can be moved around, and I like dividers. They take up space, but I actually bought a slightly larger sized freezer than the one I had previously to make sure that I had room for them. Otherwise, you could use plastic bins to help organize. Organization in a chest freezer is key, otherwise things will drift to the bottom and be lost forever. I have a spot for poultry, pork, beef, etc. I have a separate space for cooked meals, so I usually know where to look when I'm down there 'shopping'. My most recent freezer came from Sears. We never buy anything from Sears, but it's actually made by Frigidaire, it had the nice baskets and dividers, and the price was really good at the time, so we bought it. It's a big cold box, not a lot to go wrong with it unless the compressor gives out. For insurance, I put freezer packs or the occasional bottle of frozen water around to act as 'heat sinks' if the power goes out for more than a night or two. Hope this helps, Cj...See MoreNever, ever do these two things with your spouse
Comments (31)It is physically painful for me to watch dh try to paint. I can't bear to even think about it. Imagine a man who has good bearing and sense (I said he has them, not that he always uses them) suddenly going slack-jawed, slumped, one hand in a pocket (it drives me crazy to see someone with hand/s in a pocket) and smearing a paint brush over, and over, and over, the same area until it's a sticky, lumpy mess. He makes a simple task so much work. I love to paint. I spend hours on prep; removing everything (nails, electrical plates, lighting fixtures). I clean, and Swiffer, and tape. I put down plastic sheets and tape them to the floor. I set up my paint station with everything I could possible need laid out on the stand like surgical instruments. Then the next day I begin the painting. I use primer; I cut in, and do the "W" with the roller, apply thin coats, and am through in no time at all. I'll brag; I'm a damn fine painter. It's just that I go slowly and spend far more time with prep and staging than I do in the actual applying of the paint. He wants to grab a can of paint and start smearing. I am the painter in the house. He will, after I've done all the prep, sometimes help with the roller parts, but I have to keep reminding him to not go over the area that already has paint. He can't "see" how it pulls up. So, I do the painting or hire a helper. The one lady that does the best work, even better than mine, is 72. Watching her paint is like seeing poetry. I love her to death. I do the fetch and carry for her, clean her brushes, fix her lunch, and learn at the feet of the master! So, never, ever try to paint with a husband. God made Man; then he made Woman. He made them attractive to one another. Then he sat back and had a good, long chuckle....See MoreAny Good Way to avoid BLIND corners here???
Comments (33)I have the corners you have posted, but I do not have the hinged doors. I have two doors on the upper and two doors on the lower. It looks to me like you must consider two things: 1) are you willing to give up the bank of lower drawers to the right of your range to (or make them smaller) to accommodate the corner you want? 2) are you willing to lose the symmetry between the upper and the lower that your schematic illustrates, if you do change the bank of drawers. When I was working on my kitchen, I did not want a blind corner and the lack of symmetry between the upper and lower did not bother me and still doesn't. It looks like your kitchen is large enough to sacrifice that bank of drawers to accommodate that corner if that is what you want. I like my corner a lot. Let me know if you want more pics....See MoreAnother example:the difference between men & women in remodeling.
Comments (35)Hmmm, so I fuss over "girl" AND "guy" stuff. When it came time to have our electrical box upgraded from the old 100 amp service to the 200 amp service...I was the one asking the questions to the electrician. When our electrician was here this weekend to replace an old light switch that sizzled and fried (littlerally...black smoke coming out and everything!), I was right there, asking him about it. And I LOVE that he explained it to me as a human and not as "okay, little lady, here's what's up with it." When we were getting ready to build a house a few years ago...it was me that fussed over the dual zone heating. And me that fussed over the geothermal heat pump. And me that was asking about the relative advantages and disadvantages of Superior Walls vs. standard foundations. My husband came along for the ride on most of that. In our house, in many cases, I do the research (be it "male" or "female" based. Narrow down the choices to what I find acceptable. Present findings to DH and then we work on finding a decision. But, me, heck yeah, I'm going to be SO excited (seriously!) when it comes time for us to have the HVAC people in to replace our old furnace. But, I'm a little odd like that....See MoreUser
