Tile Backsplash Installation Question

Hi,

I am going to install a backsplash using 3x6 subway tile. I am planning on getting the bullnose edges to finish the top course where it doesn't go underneath a cabinet and the side tiles where it terminates at the wall.

While the bullnose will give a nice finished return edge, I am not sure what to do about grouting or caulking along these edges. Pictures I have seen seem to show what looks like grout if you look at the edge pieces between the back of the tile and the wall. For instance (from another thread here):

When installing do you "carve" out a bit of the mastic or thinset at the edge in order to have a cavity to fill with grout? Or is this just a neatly applied bead of caulk?
