Fainting couch bites and progress report

If you're faint of heart, skip the next paragraph as I really do mean bites!

I stripped my whole faining couch down naked. In the process I recieved various sharp pokes, one that bled quite a bit, and a few stupid plyers pinches. I'm definitely better than I used to be as I really messed up my hands the first time I tried reupholstery. But I did one really stupid thing; I dropped the f.c. on my right big toe. The nail cracked down the center about half way and then veered off over to the side edge, and the whole thing has turned black. I was limping yesterday and on pain pills. But the part that really worries me is it's PALE black, leading me to think the entire nail might be detaching? Anyone had that happen and can advise? It's far less painful today, but so far I've kept a dog from stepping on it and haven't stubbed it, unlike last night.

The fabric Les suggested came and it's totally wrong -- absolutely my fault for not ordering a sample swatch like an idiot. It looks so bright and pretty in the computer picture, but in person it looks a dark muddy cranberry brown and doesn't do a thing for either the f.c. or the sofa and chair, or the room. Talk about decorating mistakes. MY bad. That one was a costly lesson. I hope I can sell it. Gotta' get my camera fixed first so I can take a more honest picture of it.

The fabric I already had looks FAR better in comparison and really is pretty with the sofa and chair. It may not be photographing well on your computer screens but I like it. So now I have to lay out the pieces and pray I have enough of it.

The JCPenney draperies arrived and are still in their packages. The drapery rod hasn't gotten here yet. They look too dar, too, and too green -- but I'll re-evaluate that after my f.c. is done. At least Penneys is great about taking things back. A big thanks to whoever posted here the other day that the catalog department has swatches; if I take them back I'll bring some fabric bits with me from the sofa and f.c. and pick the really right thing.

OUCH, Oceanna. You poor thing. Sounds like you need some real egg nog for that toe. :o)

I'm sorry the fabric didn't work out. :o( It looked PERFECT on my monitor. Drat. I've had that happen too, and have finally learned to take the time to order a sample swatch. It took me many, many times of disappointment to learn though! So you are a smart cookie to figure it out after one shot!

Hope the drapes work out well, but as you mentioned, Penney's is great about returns. And now that you know they have swatches, you can compare what else is available to really compliment your chosen fabrics if you decide to return the others. I didn't know they had swatches there, but was wondering about the silk panels I saw on another thread on here. Now that I know I might be able to see a swatch, that is very tempting. Merry Christmas to me, maybe?! :o) LOL!

HOpe your toe feels better, and doesn't actually fall off. Hope it decides to hang in there with you! :o) My thumb was smashed in a door as a child, and it did actually fall off. Eeeks. It did eventually grow back. Looks as good as new. LOL! :o)

I'll watch for photos of your fainting couch. I really like your red velvet pieces, so it will be great to see the room coming together for you!!

This nail thing has happened to DS couple times. Once his thumb nail was pushed backward and almost detached (hanging by a string of skin) but I just put it back on to cover the nail bed and wrapped it up. Eventually, the new nail came and now you can't even tell it ever happened.

If your toe turned black, now that's another thing. DD got new shoes couple weeks ago and wore it w/o socks. She got some blister on the back of the heel and I thought, 'no biggie'. Gave her a bandage and called it a day. The next morning she was limping and crying and I thought, 'what a drama queen'. When I checked her foot, it was black and HUGE - there was pus coming from the blister!! She even had a fever. Turned out it was staph infection and she had to take antibiotic for it.

Watch that toe!

I agree with all of the advice you have been given - and you are wonderful for having taken in this poor little angel. I have also been through this with a mini Dachshund - as described by momof2doxies - and it was horrible. One of our guys was an Alpha - very benevolent with his siblings - one being a Beta who was a month younger. All was going well, until one day post baths - and the Alpha was always done last - the Beta decided he wanted to be Alpha and went for the back of our Alpha's neck - in just the spot where our guy couldn't shrug him off - and we were having a heck of a time ourselves - threw a bucket of water finally. The screams were horrible. No reason for it to have happened. They had lived together for over 8 months. And as in your case, after it was over, the Beta just sat there wondering what was going on - whereas our Alpha was not pleased - but he would not hurt his brother - something said brother was quick to learn. I think he did suffer from Rage Syndrome. My husband went out of town 2 days later for a week, thinking there would never be peace again - and we had another Dachshund as well - very mild-mannered, plus 2 cats - and no one was happy with the instigator. During the week, the little devil behaved himself and our pack leader forgave him and when my husband came home, he was amazed. Then out of the blue it happened again - and this time my husband to grab the innocent party without showing him it was Daddy trying to help him - bad mistake - and he was almost bitten - and then he yelled and screamed at my guy and scared the heck out of him. Our Alpha ran to me - and it was a good month before he started to trust my husband again. After all, he though he was being attacked at both ends. We did have a full medical - no health issues. We bought a Graco play pen and put the instigator in it for periods of time and he sat happily in it - lots of room and he knew for certain that our Alpha wouldn't go after him. Then our Alpha required a minor surgical procedure that required he be kept away from the other pets so we put him in the play pen - ALONE - and within 2 minutes the Beta had him by the ear, trying to pull him through the webbing - he had been watching or our guy to go near the edge of the playpen which he did almost immediately because he did not intend to stay in it. My guy was screaming, blood was pouring out. A nightmare. So a friend of mine who had Dachshunds and in fact had placed some with us, offered to babysit him for a couple of days to give my guy a break and see how he acted. He wasn't at her house more than 1/2 an hour before he went after one of her Dachshunds. His eyes were a deep chocolate brown - with very little white pupil showing - and they would turn "strange" just before he attacked. Looking at him you would think he was the sweetest dog in the world - and he was when he wasn't going nuts. We put up with this for a number of years and absolutely never left the dogs loose together in the room - were too terrified. Finally he climbed out of the play pen and went for one of the cats. Enough. We took him to the vet and she came outside and gave him just a tranquilizer shot to allow him to doze off and then we took him in and had him put to sleep. My friend whose dog he attacked had never seen anything like it and frankly I am grateful that she and her husband witnessed it. Heck, he attacked a Dachshund in the waiting room of the vets. We did go to obedience, even tried him on Prozac, but finally we had to make the decision - it was causing a lot of stress for our other pets. We always treated each dog the same way, never expressing favouritism - although of course we often have our favourites - it our case it was in fact the Alpha in question - and our very first Dachshund who was SUPER! Alpha - but benevolent who also was a very good pack leader. Both of these guys had worst back/neck disc disease and the surgeries - the others did not. We have had 5 Dachshunds in all - but now have an Eskimo - just couldn't go through the surgery again - or put the Dachshund through it. I get my Dachshund fix on the street. I really hope that your vet can find a reason for Sadie's behaviour, but bear in mind that you might have to do the unthinkable. Fortunately this dog did not try to bite us. Some dogs - just like some people - are off. I really hope that is not the case with Sadie - she was dealt a terrible blow by being adopted by her original family and may indeed have suffered brain damage. I really hope she will live a long and loving life with Cooper and your family. I will never get over not having a Dachshund.

I'm waaay late to this party AND my taste is not what one would call *mainstream*. With that proviso and the understanding that what follows is of course MHO and is not at all meant to offend anyone, I: Think the chair and sofa in the Tomato are FABULOUS. I am pleased the upholstery guy darkened the wood as it needs the depth of color to carry that scrumptious color. Think the FC is a totally unique neat piece of furniture which needs to be fixed 'proper like'. I cannot see this detracting from its value but in fact adding to it providing it's done correctly and not some hatchet job. Think also the FC is SO unique it needs a bold *here I am* fabric, not some whimpy paisley kinda fabric. The fabric Sujafr posted would be super. If your concern is to it's hardiness if you will, then try to find something tougher but very similar. That wonderful Tomato insists on something equally bold and beautiful to compete with it. Think I'd like to see your dining room as it appears from your floor plan drawing the living is open to that room - yes? The FP remarks you have laminate in the DR. Whatever the flooring material in the DR - you need to continue same material into the LR and all the way down the hall. Alternatively, you rip up the DR flooring and replace the whole 9 yards. You'll need to find a area rug/carpet that will co-ordinate the whole (both LR + DR) and if you've a window in the DR, then you'll need the same or very similar WT's on both windows. If they are open to each other as it appears they are, they can't be treated as separate entities without totally chopping up your spaces. Think the stripes definitely need to go with all painted a background color. What that might be should be a decision delayed until after the FC has a chosen fabric. Think the FP also needs to be redone - something very background not *here I am* so it's a good thing that's easy peasy for ya. :-)) Again not done/chosen until after the main furniture pieces are completed. If you were fortunate enuf to find a neat mirror piece as ?? came up with, then likely it should be the star and the FP itself should be very similar to or the same as the wall color - whatever that ends up being. WT's should be pretty much last on the list although they will need to co-ord with your wall color. Being as I am, I wouldn't even consider that item until all the other pieces were pretty clear to me AND the FC was recovered and back home. Think coffee table definitely needs the deeper stain but you seem quite willing to do so and certainly have the talent so really that is a non-issue. Think I'd like to see the (fully repaired) wonderful FC in front of the window also, particularly once it has a dramatic punchy fabric on it. It really is a *star piece* and should be the first thing one sees when entering the room. Think I'd like to see the wood on the half wall stained darker with Tomato Sofa against that wall. Well I've said enuf -- likely you're thinking *more than*. BG's I absolutely LUV LUV that Tomato fabric! On our gloomy (and presently extremely windy here) PNW days, that color is going to be soooo warm and friendly/cozy. I will suggest that you don't have a Victorian home so use this yummy unique furniture as a bold statement rather than an attempt at truly period stuff. I don't often weigh in on threads because my taste is surely not everyone's so pay me no mind at all if it doesn't suit you. :-)) Happy Xmas Holly

I have lived in most states in western USA. Can't say humidity was a THING I noticed until living in MN. I am going to chalk that up to being a child and children just manage? Even in New Mexico I don't remember the heat being a thing. We did the Disney thing in Florida a few years ago. It was October. We were there when the humidity broke for the season. Oppressive and restrictive is all I can say. Everyone crabs about northern winters but as we say you can always put on more clothes--you can only get sooo naked. I will second the bright sun of winter. Often it comes with very frigid days but it is winter, after all. We are having a rather glorious summer. Some humidity true but a week on, some relief then it returns allows for plenty of gardening and outdoor time. I think that is the key, change. Non stop heat/cold/humidity--what ever--is exhausting. I prefer the hit of extremes to the non stop torture of day after day after day--that's what gets me down. The idea of summer in the southern states holds nothing appealing. Maybe a new thread is needed. Where would be the perfect, climate wise,place to live? Four seasons, nothing EXTREME.....

We've had a cool season so far, which I've appreciated considering our lack of rain. But, now your heat wave might be the reason we've gotten up into the 80's, which should make my plants happier. All my sympathies to you all. I remember far too well...FAR...TOO...WELL...the days of 100+ temps and searing humidity in the Southeast, and I don't want to experience it again. Stay hydrated, everybody, and take it easy. It was always so sad during a heat wave to hear of a person dying by heatstroke from doing something they did every day of their lives. Sometimes you think you're perfectly fine, but caution is always the best route with the temps you all are enduring. Soak yourselves in water more than your plants, and sit and enjoy the sweat!

I hate to ask but I have to... when it fell off was it tender as heck for months? I'm scared. I appreciate your good wishes. I can't believe I did anything so darned stupid. Maybe I need steel toed shoes, and not imitation Crocs to kick around in, eh?

Yes I was pleased as punch to hear that JCP catalogue places in the stores (I hope in mine) have swatches. That would be super cool as their prices are great and their pictures sure do look pretty. My DD bought JCP drapes for her LR and is very pleased with the quality, btw.

The GREAT news, to me anyway, is that I got the f.c. all stripped down. It's not my favorite job. I took it easy today, nursing my wounds, but now need to get it put back together. Also not my favorite job, lol, but sure does give one control over the project, which I do like. It was very pretty in what did cover it and everyone loved it; but it clashed with my "new" sofa and chair, which wouldn't do. I hope I like it in the new stuff. Heck, right now I just hope I have enuf of the new stuff to get the job done.

Thanks for caring. I can't wait to see your powder room done either, not to mention your whole new house! :-)

Yikes, your poor DD! Yeah, anything can get infected. I'm generally pretty good about sterilizing and putting antibiotics on wounds -- but I didn't do anything for this except patch (with acrylic) the crack in it so it wouldn't catch on my socks. Your post makes me think maybe I should soak it in something?

Oceanna, I am so sorry the paisley didn't work - it did look perfect on the monitor, but somehow I feel responsible in part for your problem. Maybe not the toe issue tho. OUCH!

Ouch! Thought I would pop in on the toe thing - I've had it happen to me, although you'd never know it now. Toenail fell off, one eventually grew back but it was NOT super-sensitive for months or anything like that. The skin underneath was thick and not of the soft, sensitive type. Hope that makes you feel a little bit better about it!

I echo the above comments about watching it carefully though - my nail fell off subsequent to a serious infection that had me feverish, on antibiotics and unable to even hold my foot vertically for days, never mind walk on it. I had dropped an Exacto knife on the toe and thought I had cleaned the wound out well, but obviously bacteria had already gotten in.

Your fabric buying experience made me laugh a little - and is reminding me to always order swatches too - I am too impulsive and I've just been looking at the "perfect" fabric to reupholster a chair I have and was contemplating just buying the total yardage that I need. Now I'll remember to slow down and try it out first :).

If not, get it looked at. The fainting couch will be there.

Get your toe seen about. Toe injuries can lead to a number of not-so-nice diseases, so you definitely need to see a doctor. You can get infections in them, especially because circulation is so poor by the time it gets from the heart to the toes and back again. If you lose the toenail, it's not a big deal. I lost one like that and I got a superthick toenail that is not a fungus, just a thick nail. Very ugly but I have a toenail. I even had it removed hoping to get a better looking one but the last 3 (and I do get more toe injuries than anything as I go barefoot a lot) have come back thicker than the original one. Go figure, even the podiatrist think it weird.

Les, oh please, please don't apologize! I always take full responsibility for my own behavior. You were right -- on the computer that fabric looked perfect. I searched and searched and couldn't find anything better. You did a terrific job. It was 100% my fault for being in a hurry and not getting a swatch. You were wonderful. It's not your fault that I was an idiot.

Gwendolynne, yes thanks. That does make me feel better. I'm scared of catching it on the covers in bed, so sleeping with my socks on, coward that I am. It's still sitting there. An exacto knife? I did that years ago, wearing sandals at work. Darned things always fall point down, don't they? I'm so sorry yours got infected. Ouch. I'm glad you're going to buy a swatch.

Msdee and Patricia, doctor? What's that? ;-) Seriously, I would/will go if it gets worse, but it's getting better, less painful. So that's a good sign. I doubt sincerely a doctor could help at this point. Patricia, okay I'll go jump on my trampoline. Wow, you're brave to volunteer to get yours removed! Not me. Although I was very brave with horses and snow skis when I was younger, I'm a devout coward when it comes to doctors.
