need an idea for a funky vintage range hood

hello

we live in an old florida bungalow. we are getting ready to install a new 48" ge monogram range in an island and instead of putting up a regular hood, i really wanted to put up something different. i was thinking about having a old steel drum cut in half and vented to the outside with an external mount vent (that term was given to me from our guy repairing our asko dishwasher for the 3057th time. ugh.).

i was wondering if anyone else had any other ideas. the more random, the better! :)

I'd think you'd have to make a screen or baffle to fit in the drum. Can't wait to hear/see suggestions you get. Here's my random -- how about an old metal window awning? Aw, that wouldn't work for an island. Sorry!

oh! but it would if i got a narrowish longish one, cut it in half and had someone who knew what they were talking about (which is not me!) weld it together! that is exactly the type of idea i'm looking for.
as my hubby and i were watching burn notice tonight, i couldn't help but look at my space. we are going to panel the ceiling and i thought it would look cool if i had an industrial duct coming off of whatever contraption we decide on. i too am really excited to see some suggestions.
some things i've been thinking of: an old galvanized trough. a big rusty wheelbarrel. a vintage john boat. (we live in florida so it wouldn't bee TOO out of place!;))
i know that there are thousands of random items out there that i don't even know about. hopefully something will stick. and my husband will be able to get past the fact that we are hanging something that someone else is throwing away over our new range. :)

Hi, I can't show you a pic because it hasn't arrived yet, but I ordered a custom hood from Rangecraft. I saw one in one of the Better Homes and Gardens Kitchen magazines and really liked the look. They have a lot of different styles from old world to modern. Not the least expensive way to go for sure... but it will make a nice statement. We went with the Taconic in Stainless with a pot rail on the front and bands with rivets on the corners. We'll have to see how it looks when it is in (I am keeping my fingers crossed). Go to Tradewind's website. I have their 54" 1400 cfm liner. They make a lot of different items. They are quiet, easy to clean ( get baffles ! ) much less expensive than other brands...and best of all extremely efficient. I have not wiped down any of the wood in my kitchen in 2 years even though we have stirfried on high heat on our 36" gas cooktop and we have a builtin Miele deep fat fryer. About the 3" that is also unnecessary with the Tradewind brand. I donot have it and we get perfect capture. Everytime we cook. Good luck and hope this helps. Caroline

Ok, I'm the impatient type...don't want to wait for your answer! I'm going to assume that there are base cabs on either side. Seems to me what would look best is something that treats the whole space between corner and window as one unit. You could simply put a wall cab on either side of the hood you've got (or use a wood cover similar in shape, but not style, to either of the two pictures you showed...but without the two the counter pillars on the second one). The cabinet to the left of the stove would hide the vent in it. The one on the right would be a usable wall cabinet. But if the budget allows and you don't need the wall cabinet space, I'd seriously think about an oversized hood that extended as far as it needed to on either side of the range to encompass the outside vent. A vintage looking one like the Modernaires would be lovely, but other styles, like the one in the first pic above would work. I'd just be careful to keep the hood simple...something that would look appropriate with and not overpower your lovely vintage stove.

Yup, I think we're tiling at least part of that wall (it wraps around in an L from the sink wall, so I can't figure out where to stop the backsplash otherwise---right now there's a chimney and it stops at the chimney). I had the same issue with many of the Victorian or 50s hoods looking, well, too Victorian or 50s...and we're not even going for true "period" per se. I'm hoping a simple modern hood will do the trick if I can find one that looks right---we're also not hiding the dishwasher, etc. so I figure throwing in some modern trappings isn't such a bad thing at that point. The Vent-a-Hood website, while mostly filled with lots of hoods that are out of our budget, did have some nice photos of canopy style hoods used as freestanding hoods with no cabinets, though (and I actually think those look great with cabinets to the sides, so maybe something that could work for yours?) The funny part is that we have the ceiling fan with the pull-switch right now (not that we use it as it shorts the kitchen out with the new GFCI outlets...) I went through a very brief little period of wondering if we could add a modern blower up in the attic and still use the old fan, since it looks really cool (probably c. 1950, all chrome-y) but got vetoed incredibly quickly on that one! We're trying to think of creative places to use the vent cover and an iron cover that's part of our built-on ironing cabinet that sadly is coming out with a wall removal, and has sparks cut out all over it---also very cool, and can't wait to see it when the paint is stripped!

You can get custom sized inserts for whatever you want to make your hood out of if you want the function of baffles and lights.

How about the back end of a '50's chevy or caddy? Too trite? An old rowboat?

A palapa style roof? Corrugated iron?

It's hard to describe, but the non-kitsch idea I can visualize is a structure made with radiating spokes, like a '40's department store clock. Oh! Never mind. It might poke someone's eye out if it's low enough to work.

How funky do you want to go? I can get lots weirder!

Actually, I like the simplicity of your oil drum, and the way it's still metal to go with the range.
