Cute bedding. While I think chocolate and pink can be pretty, with maple furniture I think chocolate walls might feel masculine - and chocolate may feel very dated in a year. Would she consider a richer shade of the green that is in the bedding?

I did some quick doodles for you and your daughter to look at ;) Paint names are in image titles (all from Lowes). Keep in mind virtuals might not be accurate to real life. Tried to pick up bedding colors.

My cousin just painted her master suite BM Aura Paint in French Press. Don't have a pic, but she has said it was gourgeous. I need to get a sample because my 10yr. old DD wants to paint her room brown.

I like the blue or mint green. The brown is too heavy/dark.

I'll have to show her these pics in the am. Not sure if I can sell her on a gree shade or not. We did pick up some blue paint chips at Lowes Saturday.

Les, she has two "feminine" maple single dressers in her room. We live in a college town and these dressers are from the original womens dorms on campus. I have no idea how old they are but they are realy cute(and sturdy!). They have scroll shaped feet and cute brass handles with filigree type engraving on them. Best of all, they have three huge drawers unlike the drawers in new furniture that don't hold anything. I think the front of the drawers may be birds-eye maple.

Do you think with these dressers, two SW facing corner windows, and a 13 x 16 room the brown would still be too dark? It may be hard to talk her out of brown.

If you have a photo of her bedroom handy, I'll be glad to plunk the bed in it and paint the real walls. ;) Sounds like she has some very nice vintage/antique furniture!

I've been doodling a bit more. I dropped the blues and greens down and lifted the browns up a notch. I also tossed in a couple periwinkles and a yellow based cream. (Tricky, those colors seem to play up the 'whimsical' side of the bedding, but have to be careful it doesn't say 'too young'.)

So there's many more at the album. Not to confuse, but to show how different colors play off the bedding. If there is any direction you or your DD would like to take and see a sample, let me know!

I think I like the brown but in a softer shade. With virtuals, it's hard to get an accurate feeling for what the paint will really be like. I would grab some brown samples and paint a few swatches to see if she still likes it. BM has the small sample jars.

I'm having deja vu because didn't another poster do a brown wall with polka dot bedding or some sort of geometric design. Squirrel might have done some work on it. I'll see if I can dig up some old posts.

I like the soft, cream color (pale yellow). It's happy and peaceful. Maybe a Silver Sage would look nice? Not too young and peaceful for stressful college days. A beautiful gray might be nice too, good for creative thinking and restful, although I'm sure that would go over like a lead balloon!

I was playing around with one of the rooms on BM. I think what makes this chocolate color look so rich is the dark furniture in the photo but I dunno?? What do you think?
I like the browns for a 17 year old but not too dark. A nice soft brown.

That's a great shade of brown with the bedding and it all looks so beautiful with the dark furniture. Don't know about the maple furniture though. Hopefully she will post some pics or of something similar :)

I would paint the whole room white! Then, have her pick a color and do three stripes around the room, with the middle stripe being much wider, and the others being thin.

I *really* love the green with it! It's so happy and hip! A softer brown would be pretty too, but I don't know about the maple furniture. Could you paint it???

I vote for a deep rich brown -- Benjamin Moore's "Bittersweet Chocolate" (#2114-10)

Or: BM's "Plymouth Brown" (HC-73)

Add lots of fresh white and silver accessories in the room!

Here's some pics of DD's room. I initially thought when I purchased the dressers(for next to nothing) that I would probably paint them white or light. The 60's barrel chair can leave the room. She has a 60's(??) dorm desk that will leave as well because it is a huge junk collector :)

We like the blue paint shades and the medium toned browns. Waverly Fresh Periwinkle was a color DD liked. She's not real sure about the greens.

Ironically if you watch TV, her bedding is on a commercial for the "Pedegg". The wall are white in that room.

My DD is getting a kick out of this posting. She has taken an Interior Design class at school and wants to go to college to become a Family and Consumer Science teacher. The purse wallhanging was a 4H project that won special merit at out state fair. She's going to take Adv. Int. Des. next year. Maybe we need to document all of this transformation for a project!

Feel free to Photoshop away. The girls said they could if only we had the program. Now they tell me!

I did combinations with Maple wood, White wood and Ebony wood. Curtains and ceiling I just left white.

Great job Moonshadow! I really like the one you labeled tomato but I guess it's more of a raspberry to match the bedding. That's striking and would look cool with silver accessories or lamps with crystals.

I'm sorry, but I love that chair! She's getting rid of it? I say paint the legs white to match the furniture and maybe reupholster. But the shape is really cute!

The chair is an olive green tweed that replaced a 60's boomerang print. The mate to the pair of chairs is in my great room. I wouldn't get rid of the chair, it would just find a new location in my house. I crack up when I see the original fabric in pictures from my childhood. This fabric was probably put on in the 70's when olive was popular. I can remember the sofa-yellow floral, olive tweed chairs, orange accents. I'm sure my mother was very proud of her first formal living room!

I like the tomato/fuschia best also, although I don't know about with the maple furniture :) I really can't picture a dark brown on all the walls, or even a lighter brown with the furniture color, either. Would seem a shame to paint them though.

I was looking around for some retro or 50's style rooms, for the polka dots and furniture, and came across this in ApartmentTherapy ?magazine. I thought it was a great idea for using her dark brown and maybe would work well for creating a dark brown nook with the brown corner windows, as a reading spot, with a lighter color on the walls. Still not sure about the orange furniture, though. Hmmm, maybe you could tone it down with a gel stain in a dark brown?

Or, vice versa, maybe what he's done -- hot pink/tomato in the corner and white walls, with dark brown on the furniture.

Anyway, this is Jon's (awesome) retro room in a contest the magazine is having:

I wouldn't paint the furniture white - coupled with the dot bedding, it makes the room feel like it is for a little girl. She is 17 and into design, and I would think if she is going to be living there through college that is not a look she is going to want in a year or two.

I would leave the chests as is, take off the round feet at the bottom, and perhaps change out the hardware. Love the chair!!!!

I am not seeing that maple color with brown walls, but certainly if she likes the blue/periwinkle that would fit. I still would love a deeper green, closer to the darker one moon did on her great mockups.

The maple chests really aren't very orange in real life. The flash is making them appear more orange. They are a nice tan color.

Les- I too wondered if painting the furniture white would make it look French Provincal-ish and a little young. I wondered if painting it white and then shabby chic-ing it with distressing or a different color base coat would help mature the chests. DD most likely will not be going to college in our town so this would only have to do her for vacations, etc.

Squirrel-That room is really cute. I too have some qualms about painting the chests. They are very sturdy and who knows what kids apartment, etc they could end up in. Perhaps more versatile in maple but I guess the paint can could always do some other color.

It's off to Lowe's tomorrow to check out some of these shades in person.
