paint brand question

We have almost finished with our kitchen remodel and are thinking about paint. In the past we have used Behr's paint, but have usually painted when the windows could be opened. Being that it is winter and tring to be a little more environmentally friendly we are thinking of using a low VOC paint. I was wondering if anyone has used Home Depot's FreshAire paint, or Lowes Olympic paint, or Benjamin Moores Aura paint. The last being the most expensive. Or should we just stick to Behr's, it does cover well and it is affordable.

Besides the answers you get in this thread, check the achieves in the *Paint Forum*. Lots of debate.

My husband just finished painting our kitchen a few weeks ago with Behr's regular paint. We are in NY and no windows were opened, but the paint odor was minimal. Hope this helps!

You don't mention if this is an enclosed porch or open. If it is open to the elements I would only use exterior paint. I would not "tint the primer" with interior paint. Why don't you just hold off and take the primer back to the store and have it tinted properly to the base color you want. Then paint over it with the using the other colors you like for that distressed look effect. This method will save you from buying more paint making it more economical and also give better, longer lasting results than mixing different paint brands and types and keeping your fingers crossed that you get an end result color you love and it won't fade or peel.

Matching paint color in another brand of paint...

Custom matching is possible. Computer matching is not 100% reliable, you need a good paint store with staff that have some color skilz. For every successful person with a "I walked in to Wal Mart and got my perfect color" story, there's another one for whom trying to get a color matched was a complete nightmare. Be prepared. Definitely have chip in hand. Make sure their "sample" is dry when you compare it to your chip and do your visual color checks outside or at least by a window -- north light is best. Lastly, if they can't nail the color to your satisfaction, you are not obligated to buy the paint. The manufacturers are all over the custom color matching thing, but sometimes the individual stores get a little cranky about it. You don't have to settle for close enough, no matter how whiny or intimidating the paint store staff can get. They all advertise the fact that they can match any other brand's color, so they should expect to be held to a quality standard.

Staining a new deck: brand, type, amount, other specific questions

We built a 16x20 deck in March of this year and since it gets full sun most of the day, we figured it's time to stain it. Pictures are attached. I've narrowed it down to Flood CWF-UV and Ready Seal, both semi-transparent cedar tone. Both have great reviews. They are $89 and $149 for 5 gallons and cover 750sqft and 625sqft, respectively. They both claim to be oil-based, but given that the Flood can be cleaned up with soap and water, I'm thinking it's not really oil-based. Thoughts on these two products? I'm leaning toward Ready Seal, but could be persuaded otherwise. Next question: will oil-based stain dissolve paint? Our balusters are black-painted metal conduit and I can't imagine taping them all off (you can see how they're attached). I was hoping I could just carefully paint around them and if I get some stain on them, no worries. Given the size of the deck, do you think 5 gallons will be enough or way too much? Are the coverage values given on the cans realistic? The deck itself is 320sqft, but we have a 10x10 gazebo on part of it (we'd only stain the 4 supports and cross braces, not the ceiling), two sets of steps, railings, and deck supports (see pictures). Both products recommend a single coat. As a general rule, I like to follow the manufacturers' guidelines since they know their product. In your experience, however, is a second (lighter?) coat beneficial for new wood? And brushing is better than rolling, yes? Thanks for any and all advice and feedback!

I recently used FreshAire paint in my LR & Entry, & I LOVED it. The smell was nearly non-existent, I really appreciate the eco-friendly aspects of the company, & coverage was excellent.

I hope they expand their color availability. They're sort of like RH - limited color selection, but what they have is nice.

I would use it again in a heartbeat if the color worked for me.

moonkat, do you have a pic of your entry and LR, by any chance? Or at least, what color(s) did you use? I took a lot of samples of the FreshAire, but haven't tried it yet.

With flash - I think the true color is somewhere in between these 2 - it's grey day outside so the lighting isn't the best for true color:

Entry & LR. The LR walls are Shaded Path, & the entry is Wave of Grain, which is a shade lighter. The entry walls show up so much darker, if painted the same color, so I chose the lighter shade.

There's a little more yellow in these greens than I like, but this shade was a better match for my carpet, furniture & floors than any of the greens with more blue in them. I had reached the end of my patience with colors by the time I found this one, & decided I was going to love it whether I did or not lol! I 'almost' love it, so that's fine with me right now!
