Look what I (kinda) made - headboard

My neighbour was throwing out an old fake wood headboard. It had a nice shape so I lugged it into the garage where it sat for months. Yesterday I hauled it out and stapled foam and batting over it and covered it with some fabric I had in my sewing room. I'd eventually like to cover it in more interesting fabric, but for now I'm liking it. Before you say anything, I know the pics need to move. That's next on my holiday to do list.

Wow...that looks great ! You sure have a lot of talent to see the potential in that headboard and put that all together. Congratulations on saving it from the trash and making a gem of a headboard. c

For the headboard, I'd search craigslist and local thrift stores. For the fan, if you want lights, this one from Lowes is what I'd consider cottagey (nice detailing on the housing and where the blades attach:

Go to a local cabinet shop: the old fashioned kind that cuts wood with saws and fastens it together. I don’t mean the fancy upscale ones that operate a showroom for factory built cabinets. A good old fashioned cabinet maker can easily match that bookcase headboard.

Some ideas I had: *Paint the bed, but I'm not sure what color would work with the design. *Cut the top section or two off before painting. *Upholster the three inset sections, but no idea what color or material. Suggestions?

Very nice!

I'd love to have an upholstered headboard, but DH is messy in bed (he eats chocolate when he reads) and we have cats, so I think it would be a waste of fabric and staples in my house!

That's beautiful! I love the stripes; it looks great with the wall color. But what an ugly lamp! (Just kidding, of course. Saw your comment in the other thread)

Thanks guys. The best part is not having to stack my pillows so I don't lean against that stupid chimney bump out when I read at night. I've been doing that for 12 years!

My plan is to eventually make a sort of slipcover for it so I can take the fabric off and wash it.

slight hijack to Franksmom - We are having a fabric headboard made (and my jealousy of DIY'ers again rears it's ugly head - great job daisychain - it looks amazing) but we are using a vinyl-like textured product. Apparently it is just a wipe down product.

Franksmom - might be an idea for your chocolate-eating husband.

Thanks! I love the wall colour, too. I always use either Ben Moore or Farrow and Ball, but for some reason this colour is a store brand from a Canadian only store - Rona. The colour is called Mystical.

If I remember correctly, i wanted a darker silver sage and this was what I found. Our upstairs has several shades on the silver sage spectrum. Bathroom walls are lighter (BM Moonshine), bathroom door is Silver Sage (actually BM equiv.), Bedroom is Mystical and bedroom door is the darkest (F & B cardroom green).

You are very talented to see the vision of what it could be. The fabric is great. Was it a solid headboard or did it have spindles? I ask because right now someone is advertising on Craig's, one with the shape of yours but with spindles and now I'm thinking I could cover it also.

Really cool! I'm not a fan of upholstered headboards, but I really like how yours is shaped and how well it goes with your paint!

I hope the room is as lovely as my monitor is making it. :)

HIW, it was solid, but I guess you could do it with spindles. I'm just wondering about comfort when you lean against the spindles. I also made a headboard for my DD's room with plywood and 2x4's. It was super easy (but this was much easier).

Thanks everyone, especially for the feedback on the fabric. I did buy it for this room originally, but never got around to doing anything with it. I do have a vision of updating the room with a more up to date fabric (maybe a trellis or chevron).

Any thoughts on where to move the floral pics? Maybe I'll start a new thread.

Very nice!

I'm wanting to do something like that to a pair of twin headboards that sometimes would be pushed together to make a king. I am still in the hunt for the headboards.

I love the shape on yours.
