Sounds like you own, not rent? Are you planning to replace your sink (you didn't include in your 'keep' list). Is it just camera angle, or do you have a very high ceiling?

Not sure what kind of look youâÂÂre going for, but a âÂÂsafeâ look would be neutral walls and floor, with white âÂÂhotelâ quality towels and shower curtain.

The harvest gold color of tub can be hidden behind a thick white shower curtain (maybe pique or matellasse or belgian waffle weave). The toilet is mostly hidden, and the harvest gold color can be neutralized by painting the wall a dark tan with a yellow cast to it. IâÂÂd continue the neutral idea with an outdoor rug that looks like sisal. Maybe hang some framed black line drawings.

The vanity area of the room has no harvest gold to consider, and could be painted a non-neutral hue of your liking. The floor there could be the same outdoor sisal, or a nice white âÂÂhotelâ rug, and thick white towels. The medicine cabinet is the one item that would bother me every day. A large single mirror / medicine cabinet I think would greatly improve the look of the vanity area. A new faucet and cabinet hardware would also be nice if in the budget.

Love the narrow recessed wall unit - great place to display black pottery, nice perfume bottles, for example. The glow from the light sort of obscured what it looks like, but it does look like thereâÂÂs considerable wall space that could use a nice painting or print or photography. What is across from the vanity �" IâÂÂm assuming towel bars?

I love the vintage colored fixtures! I would embrace them in the decor.

What sort of style is the rest of the house? Any classic architectural features that give it an identity that you can carry through with the bathroom? MCM? Do you love color? Or do you want a more spa like bathroom?

I would definately paint any and all wood in the bathroom to give it a clean, fresh look. Paint the walls of course. Once you prime everything that alone will make the room seem brighter and there is less distraction when looking at it and planning out your color scheme. I would consider replacing the mirror with a nice oval one on the small square wall above the sink.

I take it you are replacing the sink and vanity. I would go with a pedestal sink for the tiny area if you can. Check where the pipes come out to see if this is a possibility. You will probably have to go with white. Otherwise if you are keeping the vanity I would paint it the same color as the tub/toilet. I know people here will call that crazy. Not everyone loves colored vintage tub/toilets. FYI, you can get toilet seat that are an exact color match to the vintage ones from some of the manufacturers. I would replace the oak toilet seat.

It look like there is a lot of damage to the walls and they are an uneven texture. That may explain the sponge blob paint job the PO did to it. Paint it a solid color. Don't use a shiny paint in there as it will only accentuate the flaws in the walls. Use a shower curtain with some design to draw the eye to it instead of the walls.

Shop for a shower curtain that will go with the color of the tub and toilet. Use that for your color palate for the rest of the room.

I would go BOLD with the shower curtain and not get anything too "busy" with design like tiny flowers or dots, since this is a small room. How about a black shower curtain? This one has a huge white tulip on it. Paint the walls gray. The yellow tub/toilet will look cool with black and gray. The white floors will keep the space open.

Or bring in some of the tub color along with other bright colors in a white shower curtain? Look for curtains with asymmetrical designs as they are just more interesting to the eye. Paint the walls a deep neutral.

I would consider having colored fixtures in a bathroom an asset to work with and not a decorating "challenge".

Unfortunately, replacing the sink and medicine cabinet isn't in my budget right now. I definately want to replace the cabinet hardware, towel bars, and possibly the faucet.

I never thought about using the small recessed area to put anything but that is a great idea. Definately needs some print or photo, possibly on the opposite side of the recessed area. There isn't anything on the wall opposite the vanity.

Can you offer some paint choices for the dark tan with yellow casting?

In regards to the rest of the condo, it's simply walk into the living room-kitchen to the right. My sofa/loveseat is red/cranberry color. Past the living room is a small hall that's long enough to fit a floor runner. This hall leads to a bedroom on the left, and another bedroom on the right. The bathroom in the photos is near the bedroom on the right.

I know I'm probably pushing it with trying to get a spa look with my room size and budget but I'm hoping to get as close as possible.

Don't get discouraged. We have plenty of budget conscious people here who share advice. I am assuming you are fairly young so you can probably do something very, very contemporary to add a "Wow" factor to you tiny bath.

You are worried about the gray/black/yellow combo being dark. Big blocks of bold contrast should not seem too dark. If you choose a medium gray it won't seem cave-like. The floor is white. If you would use a black shower curtain similar to the one I showed it has lots of white in it. Hang some deep yellow towels around. Put red tulip in a clear glass and set it on the sink. It's simple and elegant. Painting the vanity the same yellow as the tub will make it cohesive and liven it up a bit. If you can't replace the mirrored cabinet maybe you could find a wood frame that is wider and has some detail, and glue it over the existing frame? You might be able to find one at Goodwill and take the art out of it and use it.

Check out ApartmentTherapy.com for creative, budget minded ideas for smaller homes. Consider shopping at Target for you accessories like the shower curtain. They have great contemporary stuff and it is reasonably priced. Ikea is good for towel bars and faucets. A new chrome or nickel shower rod will make the room sparkle. If you are artistic you could consider adding glass tiles for wall art. Is storage a problem in the space?

I think if it were me, I'd try to have some fun with those yellow fixtures and try not to take the whole thing too seriously. Here's a link to a shower curtain that would pull the yellow and leave some other options for paint. (see below)

If you wanted something a little more serious, PB has a couple of shower curtains that have a gold color in them. Look at Sawyer....nice contemporary floral with plenty of color to work with.

I think you really need to embrace the color of the fixtures and make it work for you. Black and white could work with yellow, but ultimately you run the risk of having the yellow stuff stick out like a sore thumb... JMO

One thing I'd try is using a grout colorant on the floor tile. [You can go light over darker grout.] Looks like the wall tile has a light grout (a bleach pen might help if it's spotty), but my eye goes right to the floor tile. I had a similar floor, sigh. Try to get wall and floor grout both close to the tile color. Trust me, it will be tedious but make a big difference!

Yes, vintage posters are everywhere but they are still one of my fav go-to sources for color combinations.

I chose ones that had oak-y tones in them, but you *could* choose a wall color and then paint out the vanity and mirror in the same shade (but I'd use semi-gloss on them). This would help the items "disappear" into the wall.
