Is this for the kitchen or a DR? It is a very, very delicate looking table. Any kids or future teenage boys going to be eating at this?

Blfenton- Dining area. We tore down the wall between the DA Window and the Fridge so it one space. It is a 1957 ranch of about 1400 sq ft. There is no separate DR. As of right now it is just DH and me, but we are planning on having children. I was looking for a table that was not too bulky looking since it is a small space just shy of 8 ft x 10'9" (non-window side).

We have a small eating area in our kitchen, although we do have a separate DR, and we tried to put a rectangular table in the space. We found that the corners just took up too much space. Does this table come in an oval shape. It might be a better shape for your space.
Oval tables are usually round and then when a leave is put in it becomes oval. Might be a better fit for people getting around it to sit.

Only problem with round/oval tables is that they are at least 42" wide as opposed to 36" for rectangular which seems too wide for the space.

Newbie- Aren't you doing a banquette? I would not have a table with legs, but a pedestal table. You'll be cursing those legs for the next several years, every time you try to sit at the banquette. My mom had this set up for a few months...and got a new table :)

Maybe I watch too much Sarah Richardson, but I'd start with the fabric. What's your fabric for the windows, banquette, chairs, etc. Do you have anything picked out, yet? Do you like it with the wall color? All the other accessories are easier to choose, once you have a color scheme, in place.

BTW, the kitchen is looking great, so far...and I wish you wonderful luck, with your inspection!

No.. I do not think a banquette is going to work. I am leaning towards a jute rug and woven blinds, kind of like in this photo.

Newbie- How much room do you have, in the dining area? Will there be enough space for a table and chairs? Have you tried using paper/cardboard templates and seeing if there's room to pull back chairs and get in and out, with the table, above?

The black table will look nice, with the jute rug and other finishes, but the legs do look a little delicate. Just remember, it may be more difficult to slide chairs on that type of rug, so make sure you can easily sit at the table. A banquette, bench, or armless settee might be a great alternative, if the chairs are too crowded on all four sides.

Beautiful inspiration picture...and is that your backsplash choice, too? It's lovely with the other finishes.

Lavender- I better have room for a table! 8ft by 10'9".

Newbie- Is that the entire dining area? Do you have to subtract the walkway, around the peninsula and access to the living room, from that measurement? I'm guessing the table is 36" to 42" across (on the short side) and chairs need space, to move back and you still need room for people to access chairs, on the sides facing the walls.

I'm not trying to be difficult, just asking if you've made a template of the table size, laid it on the floor and made allowances for chairs sliding away from the table (for people to get in and out) and access to all sides. Will people have to get out of a chair, if someone is trying to get past them? I know it's fine when it's just you and DH, but for company...it may be a little tight.

Here's the theory:

Each person requires about 24â³ of width so they can comfortably eat and avoid bumping elbows.
Allow 32â³ between the table and wall to allow people to get up and sit down easily.
Allow 38â³ if people are also going to be walking back and forth behind the table.
Allow 42â³ if you are going to serve people from behind their chairs.
If you have a china cabinet or buffet table, take your measurement from there, not the wall.

Hi Newbie. I haven't posted for a while, but just saw your thread so I thought I'd chime in.

For walking space behind a table and chairs, you'll need an aisle of at least 42". Recommendations are for at least 50" if the traffic is significant. Your room is 96" wide. Take away 36" for a table, and you're left with 60" for aisles.

I also like round tables, but they do require a wider room. I really wanted one in my old DR, but it was very narrow so it wouldn't work.

I like the table you posted above. I think it's chic, sexy, and slender without being too delicate.

Also, don't be tempted to go with a table narrower than 36". I have an antique QS oak "apartment" table that's 30". It was great in college in my studio with a tiny eating space, but it doesn't work well as a DR table when plates are set.

My new breakfast nook is only going to be 7 x 10. I guess by what breezy is saying I can;t have a table. Table ideas anyone? Please.

GreenAcresAli...It depends on how open your breakfast area is and what might be across from the table, or hem it in. In other words, it would help to see your layout.

In the dining room in our last house, we did well with placing the table 30" from the window wall...That's close to Marcolo's measurement. If you did that, and if the room is open to a decent aisle, you have plenty of room for a table. If, however, at the edge of 7 ft is a wall or cabinetry, you will be pretty tight.

One option would be to build in a bench on one wall, so there is no space behind the seating, which then allows the table to be more like 24" from the wall to give you a bit more room.

There may be other options. How many do you want to seat?

Newbie, I'm not a particular fan of the spindly legs, but that's personal style and otherwise, I like the table. I do agree with LL, that even without the banquette, that pedestal tables make for easier/more comfortable seating, especially if the space is tight.

As I said above, we had 30" behind our table in our previous house, and thought it worked great, but we served and bussed from the front side, mostly, which had a wider aisle and a large doorway. 30" on both sides may be tight to move around once everyone is seated. The room around it partly depends on chair style and size, too.

My mom had a dining area that was 7' x 10' and it was pretty tight. I think she would have used a banquette, if she were in that position now...and it would have worked much better. You don't have to pull a banquette back, to sit down, so as Rhome said...there's more room for traffic, on the other side.

If there hadn't been walls on all sides and the space had been open on one side, it would have been much easier. It got really tiresome, standing up, every time someone had to walk by...and we were small children :)

I have read all of your posts, thank you for your insight. Now I must go swim with sharks. Okay-- that is a little dramatic but this DA is killing me. The DA has been one of my biggest concerns all along. Not sure what I am going to do--must think more, although I really think I have done a lot of this lately. ;) Thanks again.

Newbie- Maybe go back and look at all the plans that Rhome and others drew for you, during your planning stage. I know that there were several wonderful dining area ideas...maybe something will pop out and make this decision easier.

You have a beautiful kitchen and that's always seemed to be your main concern. The dining area will be fine...just find a table that fits in your space and works comfortably for every day dining. It can be a little tight, when you have company over, but you don't want to be cramped on a daily basis. There's nothing worse than inching around a too big table, when there's only two of you eating dinner.

So, if you like black, plan on black and pick out a light fixture and move on. Get the kitchen finished, pass the inspection and then take a few days and go find a table. It will all work out beautifully and you and DH are going to love your new space :)

Okay-- I am a little calmer.

If I go with a banquette, should I do an L-shape? Or just one bench? Does it matter that the window in the DA is 28" from the floor-- will that be a problem?

Also what color should the bench part be? White-the same as the cabinets? Black? Wood tone of some sort? Should the table be the same. We do not have children yet, but they are in the plans-- I am afraid the white would get yucky. Sorry I have been thinking way too much this morning... yucky is all I can pull off.

@Lavender- Thanks. But unfortunately the plans Rhome and others helped with kept (1) kept the door to the garage where it was and now it is has moved to farther west on that same wall AND (2) their plans did not anticipate overhang for the peninsula.

I missed something. Why did I think you decided against the overhang? Are you still planning to have stools? That will be so handy and fun, when you're entertaining.

You could do just one banquette, or an L-shaped banquette, since I think either would look wonderful in your space. The window looks like you could easily work around it, just make sure you have the back of the banquette high enough, to support pillows without leaning against the glass.

I want to do something like this, but with the table pulled up to the banquette/window seat. My dining area will be plenty long enough, but only 10' deep, with a major walkway, so the banquette will make it easier to use the space.

Also, it might help if you repost your plan, so we can see how much room you have for the dining area, where you have the garage entrance and how much room you need for walkways, etc. Hope this helps :)

Wow- I really think they should make a special kind of pill to survive a kitchen reno (the mood swings, the stress, the frustration, the panic/anxiety at every other turn or worst, when you least expect it)-- oh wait, they do kinda sorta, it is called wine! :)

So I went out and relaxed a little yesterday and talked with my GC and he is totally gung-ho about building an L-shape banquette. I have thought about it and discussed with DH and I think it the best use of the space. I guess I still need to find a table...but hopefully that will be easier.

Now the decision with the banquette has come to whether there should be a back on it on the garage wall side or just pillows like it will have to be under the DA window? I have seen two different styles of backs--one that is a more traditional back and the other that is more like a headboard shaped cushion. Does any one have any experience with backs versus no backs?
