Please help me with some kitchen updates!

Hi Everyone! I am brand new to this board and after googling a few things I quickly found out that this is the place to be for excellent kitchen help! A little background.... We are buying this house that is 8 yrs the kitchen cabinets are a creamish bisque color from Kraftmaid... there is crown molding from kraftmaid as well. We will be replacing the appliances with streamlined stainless steel and there are hardwood floors. We are wanting to replace the current backsplash.. just not my style. I need help picking out a new backsplash and I am wondering if anyone can superimpose one onto a picture for me? i have seen this done and i think it would be a big help! I am leaning towards some sort of subway tile.. i just don't know if i should do more of a tumbled marble color or the bright white ones! any advice would be great!!

Also... the walls are going to be painted BM Powell Buff and all of the woodwork in the house is being painted white. We are also thinking of installing crown molding in the kitchen. DO you think that this would help break up the space between the cabinets and the ceiling? we will also be getting new blinds, french country style barstools, new oil rubbed bronze hardware and doing a window treatment on the kitchen window. Any comments or suggestions about the kitchen would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Welcome. I think when you replace the backsplash it will make a world of difference to your kitchen. And painting the woodwork will update the look too. Have you been to the finished kitchen blog where you can look at many photos of finished backsplashes?

welcome!! it depends on how much of a statement you want to make. i LOVE tile and had always thought this is where I would put my personal stamp when we re-did our kitchen. I'd have gone hog wild, but my husband preferred a more neutral scheme as he thought we'd get sick of something too busy or that made too much of a statement. I could see his point and wasn't up for an argument on it as I was frankly just happy that he had agreed to the renovation at all.

anyway, the first thing that popped into my head with your description of stainless sleek appliances and with the nice cabinetry and pretty wall color, is long thin strips of varying shades of slate.

i loved her inspiration pic and the combo of tiles used in it. also, i love rhome410's tile so search for some of her posts or check the Finished kitchen blog for pics of her kitchen (not sure if it is there yet).

we went with a crackle subway tile (sort of boring for someone who was after the WOW factor, but my husband is right in that it is a classic look and not something we'll grown tired of).

I don't know that you can get a real looking Shaker hollow door because the flat recessed panel area would have to be very thin in cross section. In my experience the raised panel portion of a hollow door is much thicker than the raised panel on a solid wood door, almost as thick as the stiles and rails themselves in cross section. Stylistically I don't think a 6 raised panel will work well on closets with the Shaker on the room doors. In a hierarchical sense, the Room door is the Primary door and should be fancier or more detailed than closet doors if they are not all going to match. I see nothing wrong, if you are not matching doors, with using a Shaker door on the room door and using plain slab doors in a paint grade with a good paint job on them for the closets, so that the closets take a stylistic back seat to the room doors. As for hollow vs. solid. I am strongly biased toward solid even for pocket doors. It is the hanging hardware and the workmanship of the hang that dictates their proper function, not the weight of the doors. The houses in my neighborhood have pocket doors that are 10 feet tall and four feet wide that are Very heavy. But you have to get good hardware, have a good carpenter do the install, and *make *sure * the *finish *carpenters *don't *nail *the *baseboards* and *door *casings *through the *drywall *and *into *the *pocket *doors *themselves*. Question for you: how do you feel about that floor tile in the laundry room? To me it goes a lot better in there now that the cabinet is a more neutral color. In your kitchen you have yellowy granite, yellowy/green floors, neutral tan backsplash and reddish cabinets so your colors are kind of fighting with each other right now. I have a feeling those cabinets are never going to look "right" with the granite unless the granite is a lot more reddish in person. Love your inspiration kitchen and think that look could definitely be achieved. If you're not ready to gut, painting the cabs is probably your best option. You could just sort of hide the floors with a couple of rugs until you're ready for the big redo. Or you could hide the floors with laminate floating floor as a temp fix...but would it start to look cruddy soon because of water?

Yes, as pictured, it's a fire hazard! Adding in ventilation really is a huge improvement in kitchen functionality, as well as adding a nice modern look with a chimney hood. I'd only plan on "refacing" the current cabinets if the boxes and drawers wer in very very good shape and I had zero gripes with the layout. Otherwise, refacing is money thrown away, as it's darn near as expensive as buying new cabinets. And, painting is only budget friendly if DIYed. So, that's why I suggested Ikea cabinets. THey're easy to deal with even if you are very novice DIY and they look like you spent thousands more than you did. THey're a real budget stretcher. The other main suggestion that I have for you is to GET DIYable if you're not currently. Big boxes hold classes on tiling, drywalling, and all other kinds of skills that cost a lot of money to have hired done. A modest investment in tools and some practice on smaller jobs will really help you to become comfortable with doing some of the reno yourself. I'm not saying to just read a book and then do the electrical yourself, but, at least become familiar with some electrical and plumbing and other trades so that you can confidently lay out the project for a professional to bid on and be sure that you've gotten someone who will do the job right. Don't let "construction" intimidate you! It really isn't that hard----or you wouldn't see some of the, um, lower skilset individuals, making good money at it.

Heidi, I think your home is completely charming. It's friendly like a big warm hug, and your view is to live for. It must make you feel good every time you look out the window. The wonderful thing about small houses is they're easier to clean and cheaper to heat or cool, leaving us more time and money for the important things in life like family, friends, and nature. Your home looks like a wonderful place to relax after a busy day. The quilt looks great hanging over the staircase, and what a great place to put it. One day I was apologizing for my messes to a dear older woman as I saw her in the front door and she said something I've never forgotten. She smiled, patted me gently on the arm and said, "Nothing creative ever comes of a clean house." :D (I'm thinking of framing that.) As for the fan, I think it's just perfect for your home, if that's what you're asking? I love the detail around the top. It reminds me of the antique Tiffany lamps with the camels and palm trees on them, which I always loved. The hammered finish where the arms attach to the blades is very pleasing. I love the color you've selected for the cabinets and it would look great with the tile. It goes with that beautiful leather chair that looks so inviting. Can you stain the cabs or would that need to be paint? Would the edges of the tile be harder to clean or maybe be crumb catchers? I can't feel it in my hand to decide. I would love to see more updated pictures. I'm terrifically color oriented and that green wall is throwing me off.

Thanks! I really like the subway crackle tile! it looks amazing!..... are your tiles more of a cream or a true white? and where did you find them? I think i do like a more traditional look.. so i think the subway tiles will be good for that! I think i will use some color elsewhere! What I don't like about the current backsplash is all the color blocks! of course the people that owned the house just put it in! wish they would have just let us pick something! haha! this is still the original owners furniture etc in the house.. we are planning on doing a dark walnut table and maybe dark walnut stools with fabric cushions to add some softness. I was also thinking of putting 2 large(nothing ornate) corbels underneath the island and having them painted to match the cabinets.. do u think that would look good?thx!

hehehe...as long as you're going to replace that backsplash, there's no need for my input. I don't like it either.

Corbels on the island would look nice--but be sure you won't miss the legroom.

I think the corbels are a good idea but only if you won't be whacking your knees on them... if the space allows comfortable seating for two with room to get on and off the seats, I would go for the corbels as I think it would be a really nice touch.

re: the existing backsplash, I have to agree with you completely... too busy - looks very chopped up - and, just my opinion, but I think the 4"x4" square is very dated looking.

my tiles are by Walker Zanger, Gramercy Park, bone china (off white), 2" x 6" subway. search under Redroze on this forum... she found some 2" x 8" subway tiles though Ann Sacks that were just a little bit more unique and really really nice.
