That looks awesome and so much bigger than in the other pic. I thought it was a small loveseat. You are so lucky with those things! It looks great with your armoire, too, which is a beauty! Tell me that wasn't a bargain find, too :)

Squirrel, the piece is 70", which makes it either a very small sofa or a large loveseat/settee. Yes, I think I did very well with this! You should have seen the home I bought it from--everything was top of the line. The owner actually gave me a tour once I asked about their plans to sell. They were very nice and expressed their happiness that "someone who appreciated it" got it. They were originally asking $475, then dropped the price to $450. They took my offer of $400. I think it's tough to sell upholstered furniture in general, and I don't think listing things a few weeks before Christmas helps either. I was actually the first person to look at it!

The french armoire was also a Craig's List treasure. I had been looking on Ebay and couldn't find anything I could afford. I found this one last year. It was in the Boston area. The owner wanted $1,200 and I ended up getting it for $1,000. It was a HUGE purchase for me, but as I look around I think it was a steal. Most like this go for thousands. I spent $400 having it cleaned and lightly restored. I love it, the age adds so much to my home (it is estimated to be between 200-250 years old). I've done really well with Craig's List, but my New Year's Resolution is to not even look anymore!! (There is truly nothing else I need, so I'm trying to avoid any temptations!)

This is a fantastic piece of furniture. So very lucky that you found it. I think you do so well, you should keep shopping and "flip" some of it.

Ohhhh, get out of here! Can we see the whole armoire? It looks so much like one I know, an antique which came from overseas. It's handcarved and irregularly beautiful!

That is a steal!

Squirrel, here is the full shot of the armoire. It is from France, but I don't know the region. It is a country piece, I am told, because of it's relative simplicity and wood (mostly pine). The restoration guy feels that this very, very old (Late 18th century to early 19th century). The wood on the back was cut with a hatchet. It has all the original hardware. It must have dismantled when it was shipped oveseas, because all the pieces are numbered for reassembly.

I know I got a good deal on this (I bought it from a younger guy who got it as a barter. He dabbled in antiques but was not a dealer or expert), but I also know that it is not as valuable as many I have seen on french antique websites. I think that's primarily because it's not the more desireable wood like cherry or oak, and though beautiful, the carvings are fairly simple. But I love it because of this I think--I like to imagine the young french girl who received this upon marriage, and think about the home it may have been in, and what was stored in it . . . So much fun!

Wow! I love your new sofa! And that armoire! (You know, most of those antique armoires come apart into small peices. They were built that way so the French could get them up in their small apartments)

That is a beauty. I can't believe the things you find! Don't you just love that old hardware, too. Interesting how they dismantel them; I think I'd heard that too, about getting up the narrow walkups :)

Sorry, Squirrel, I missed your question. Actually I was quite shocked to see that you like the paint color because I'm utterly sick of it!--it is the original builder's paint from when we moved in 8 years ago--it's called Warm Wool and I think it's SW. We desperately need to repaint the l/r and common areas, but I've been procrastinating because I have no idea what color to pick!

I realized that I didn't thank you all for your nice comments. It is so great to be able to share finding treasures with people who can appreciate it!

Deborah: Could you possibly "repurpose" the coffins you find into a lovely banquette or invert it for use as an armoire/media center? LOL, haven't seen any of those listed here!

Johnatemp: For some reason, I'm getting "curvier" with age as well, LOL (well, actually more lumpy than curvy these days). I am planning to use all these pieces in my "french country" bedroom makeover. I don't want it too over the top froufrou, however, and am trying to figure out the balance. I'm thinking lots of off-white linens combined with small amounts of really elegant toiles/checks. I have some really cool antique toile somewhere in the basement that I'm thinking of using as the color inspiration.

Texashottie: I will definitely keep you all posted because I'm going to be begging for help when I actually try to pull all this together!

Patricia43: Thanks for the compliments--actually I did have a little business for a while--still have the shop actually (I use it now for storage). I would "rescue" things, repaint, etc. and then resell. I loved it, but it was a lot of work and I learned that I'm not a salesman or businessperson!

It looks like a creamy, soft beigy pale yellow/cream from here, lol, whatever that is! One of my new favorite colors :)
