On the walls of a stairwell - Need ideas

Our stairs that go down to our basement are next to our front entry. They go down to a landing and then turn back. The wall over the landing is visible from the front entry. I need ideas for that sort of large wall space and also for the wall going down the stairs. I'm not sure how to make it look balanced right.

Does anyone sit furniture on their landing like a shallow table or something?

Find a large artwork -- and several matching smaller ones (for example -- JUST an example -- landscapes? abstracts? botanicals?) that could go on the stairwell itself.

OR do the same thing with family photos -- re-do a bunch in black-and-white. Hang a couple of larger ones (use a larger mat too!) on the larger space -- and then create a wall display that could go on the stairwell with the rest.

Yes -- if there is room a small table with a thin buffet lamp or a small silk greenery arrangement could look wonderful too!

Yep, we did pretty much what teacats is recommending. A plant on the landing and some prints from Z Gallerie in a sepia tone.

Here's some information from e-bay guides about hanging pix on a stair: "Up a staircase, pictures should be hung to duplicate the rising levels of the stairs. It looks best to keep throughout a uniform distance between the center of the edge of a step next to the wall and the center point of the picture directly above. As for how high to hang, start off with the center point of the art about 5Â from the center point of the step. Super-Duper Tip: Trace your pictures onto large pieces of paper and cut out the shapes. Use a low-tack tape, like painterÂs tape, to place and arrange the paper templates on the wall until you have a layout you like. Affix nails or picture hooks into the wall through your paper template and then remove it. Remember to account for the distance each nail should be up from the center point of each picture."

On second thought, no, it needs to be a full wall. The space on either side of the range is not large enough to look good at differing wall heights. So I guess my only question is - is it okay to leave the top of the staircase open? There's not really enough room here for a swinging door but anything else to close it off?

I never understand the reasoning behind what some architects and builders have in mind when they do something like this. Please take more pics. What is on the left side of the stair? Are you in an area that needs a big entrance closet? I s there any ducts, or hidden house equipment in that closet? Please do a thumbnail sketch of the floor plan of the area. For instance, take over all dimensions. Then start in a corner and go all the way around the room with each dimension. Don't leave any measurement out. I have an idea, but need measurements and layout. Would love to help.

My stairwell leading to our finished basement is a hoot but it serves my purpose. The stairwell is across from the garage entrance (the one we use all the time) so I put clocks with the time where my family lives and under the clock is the location. I saw this in a magazine and I though how cool is that? I set the time for my son in Iraq, my mom in Vegas and my DH's family in Indiana.

I must say I LOVE Newhomebuilders style much better though!

hoyamom I LOVE that idea!!! I have to find a place to do that - hope you don't mind but I'm saving your pic so I have a reference. I'm on Central time, one son on Mountain time and the other on Pacific at the moment but he crisscrosses the country from Eastern to Mountain to Pacific ;-/ so I guess for him I need a chalkboard!!!

I didn't get to check this post yesterday and was glad to see some replies today. Thank you.
I have thought about re-doing some family photos in black and white or sepia for my hallway or stairwell along the side. The back wall that you can see from the entry has a light fixture below like Newhomebuilders photo. I need to put a new light there and wonder if I should use a sconce aimed up at the whatever-I-put-there.

Lindybarts - Wish I had a houseplant that looked that good. lol My thumb is green outside but turns brown when I come in. I killed a fern just like that once. : ( I'm checking out the Z Gallerie website you mentioned. Thank you.

Hoyamom - What a cool idea. Has your son seen that photo? I'm sure he appreciates knowing that you're thinking of him every time you see that clock - and many times in between probably. God bless.

Newhomebuilder - Thank you for putting the spacing on there. That will give me something to compare too. Had to look at that basket twice. That's unique. I sometimes sit things at the top of the stairs to take down when I go.

Thanks! The basket is called a stair (or step) basket and you can find them many places. It is now doing "double" duty for Christmas!

We haven't done this yet, but our basement is used for entertaining. And the stairs make a 180 degree turn as christie_sw_mo describes.

Our plan is to paint an abstract outline of a grand piano on the walls of the first flight of stairs and the landing. It would just be a simple black outline of the piano against off-white walls and the keys would somehow become a part of the banister.
