I'd keep the same color....or perhaps "intensities" of the same color....that is the same color but less pigment to the gallon, Try it you can always add the rest iof the pigment and be fine....as long as you don't use more than a brushful out of the gallon.

Your new color looks gorgeous, especially against your beautiful woodwork. I like seeing different colors next to each other so I wouldn't be hesitant to paint the dining room a different color; I also think dining rooms should be differentiated from other rooms through color. I would probably keep the entry the same color as the living room or, as Lindac suggests, a darker or lighter shade of the same.

Love the color! I think the same intensity, different colors would work. I think if you have the entry, hallway and upstairs hallway the same, and then a different color for the DR and the same intensity different color for LR it would work. What color were you thinking for the DR?

I was at a party last night and saw that the home owners had done an interesting twist to the idea of using the same colors throughout their first floor. Their living room and kitchen are connected by openings, and both rooms were done in the same color. Kind of a soft grey-green for the walls and a creamy off-white for the trim. There is a short, narrow passage from kitchen to family room, and another opening from kitchen to dining room. The FR and DR also connect to each other by a doorway. The FR and DR were done in the same colors as the kitchen and LR, but with wall and trim reversed: hence, FR and DR walls are the creamy off-white, and the trim is the grey-green. The house is not a bungalow, ceilings are probably lower than in yours, and doorways narrower. But still, I wonder: suppose you were to do your LR and DR the same way and then reverse the colors in the hall which lies between those rooms? Just a thought...

boopadaboo, it's Bungalow Gold. Of course you love it, you recommended it! :) I will get better pics when the room is put back together. So far it looks a little blah to me in daylight but it's perfect at night. I'm reserving judgment until everything is back in the room and I've had a chance to get used to the change. It's also overcast today so not a good day to judge. But I definitely like the decrease in contrast with the woodwork and floors.

As for other possible colors, I could do green or red. I have a lot of green and blue upstairs so red seems like the better choice. I haven't "done" the dining room yet so there is nothing permanent to coordinate with in there besides the woodwork and flooring. It just needs to fit the character of the house and be ok with the living room, which is almost like the same room because the opening between the two rooms is so wide. The couch in the living room is a difficult yellow-green, so that's why I start in that room.

I vote for different color in the dining room. Yes, the opening between LR and DR is wide, but it is clearly a different room. I love red, but not sure how that would work with your gorgeous woodwork. Green is probably better.

I would probably even do a 3rd color in the foyer and hall.

I wouldn't consider green with your woodwork, which is absolutely beautiful! Stick to a warm color, since your wood is a warm tone~~IMO, green is way too cool and will make the room too blah.

I like the idea of the same color in the DR, and something different in the hall/up the stairs. ;o)

Hampshire Gray by BM would be a beautiful color as a compliment to the gold. It is a deep gray green which would look great with your wood trim.

We're in a bungalow as well and we have original woodwork, pretty much the same color as yours. Our Front entry way and living room are both SW Hubbard Squash (slightly lighter shade of gold than yours) and our dining room is SW Rembrandt Ruby. We have area rugs in both rooms and the gold and ruby colors are in both rugs (along with multiple blues).

I love having 2 different colors with the original woodwork. Our stairway is off the dining room and is behind a door- that's why we did the LR and entry the same color.

I have the exact same colors in the exact same rooms. I love how the gold becomes neutral.

I have the gold extended into the hallway and the kitchen. I'm kind of considering a different kitchen color but haven't decided yet. Our office area. Which opens off the hallway/foyer is bungalow blue.

I would do a different color, just because I think there are so many fabulous paint colors out there and IMO if you do the DR the same color as the LR, they will feel like a continuous space rather than two separate rooms.

I don't see red, though. My first thought was something more terracotta. My DR is an Aura color called Milk & Honey, which I love but might not stand up to your gold. You might need something a little more intense. Another color that I love with gold is purple! I know it's not for everyone, but something like BM Sleepy Hollow or Frozen In Time could look really cool.

Maybe try your LR color in a paler version in your entry.

Take all of this with a grain of salt, though, as I find it difficult to recommend specific colors without actually being IN the space.

As a general rule, continuity of color increases visual sense of space; using different colors shrink a space.

Fabulous color...I vote to use it again!

I say paint the colors that make you happy as long as they aren't totally jarring.

marcolo, that is what I was getting at with my original post. I'm not sure it's a good idea to make these little rooms seem choppy by painting them different colors. In contrast, the kitchen has 2 normal size doorways, and I think if it's a separate color, that's fine.

Bungalow_house, I too have a "little old house", and at one point I had every room painted in a different color. I have since started the process of repainting and am going with a soft, light grayed-green throughout. The rooms that now flow into one another that I've repainted make me visually breathe a sigh of relief. It's no longer the wall color that is the primary focus in my home, it's the decor, and how the rooms all flow together. Using the same color throughout is working so much better for me, especially since my home is comprised of small rooms that open onto each other.

I've had the same dilemma in my own bungalow. We first painted each room a different shade from the Sherwin Williams 'Arts & Crafts" interior palette, but have recently redone a few of them in more similar tones, precisely for the reasons marcolo mentions: in this small space, the radical changes in color did tend to make the rooms feel much smaller.

If you're interested, we've got White Hyacinth, Buckram Binding, and Roycroft Vellum in most of the rooms, with Hubbard Squash/Roycroft Adobe in the dining room. Just holler if you'd like any photos of these.

Their Morris Room Green is downright fantastic with the bungalow trim, but it is indeed on the cooler side, and that's a room we just repainted to a lighter beige. Also, be careful with the adobe/dark reds, since they can turn out to clash terribly with the wood. We started with a burgundy tone and had to switch to something much more orange.

Circuspeanut - those SW A&C colors are wonderful! When we moved into our house about 9 years ago, we had the entire place painted in Buckram Binding. In the ensuing years, however, I turned the place into a Crayola box, and can only ask myself, "What was I thinking?" ;-) Anyway, just wanted to say that the A&C colors are lovely and I can definitely see them in B_H's home.

I will definitely stick with one or another manufacturer's A&C palette. I'm not up for reinventing the wheel.

The new living room color is from the Eddie Bauer Craftsman collection at Lowe's. I think they are more "craftsman-inspired" than historically correct. They seem a bit more rich and vivid to me than other manufacturer's A&C collections, but still appropriate enough to go with the woodwork and darkness of a bungalow. Kind of appropriate to this house, now that I think about it, because it has some Victorian holdovers despite being built in 1922.

(BTW, there is nothing craftsman about my house...I think the A&C palettes are misnamed. They should be called "early 20th century".)

OK. I'm always hesitant to post shots of my house, because it's so difficult to photograph such small spaces without it looking like Barbie's Palace of Clutter -- but I know how hard it is to get images of what paint colors really look like.

The dining room is Hubbard Squash on top, BM Affinity Buttered Yam on bottom (the Roycroft Adobe was too burgundy-colored); looking into the living room which is Roycroft Vellum. (For some reason the Hubbard Squash always looks peachy in photos, it really isn't.)

circuspeanut, thanks for the pictures. Your house is lovely! I know what you mean about photographing the small spaces. I've tried 1) holding the camera directly against the opposite wall and 2) standing in a closet to get the widest shot possible. :)

I see what you mean about the dining room color. That echos what sueb20 said earlier about terra cotta. I like the way you added the living room color into the dining room above the picture rail. There is your continuity.

Not to veer off topic, but we have to refinish our woodwork too. The original stuff is in really bad shape. We made a lot of repairs and replaced woodwork that had been removed by a previous owner, and our windows were restored and weatherstripped so they are refinished already, so we have a multitude of finishes going on right now. Did you use clear shellac? I can't decide what to do with all our stuff, which is why it's still not done. I like it dark, but I can't achieve that without stain, and I don't really want to go there.

Re: potential colors and refinishing the old woodwork. Have you posted on the old house forum? You probably will get some expert advice over there.

And BTW my suggestions based on the house I'd visited were poorly worded. I hadn't meant to imply that you should necessarily paint your walls grey-green. My original idea had been to do the opposite in the hall than in the adjoining rooms. Of course, that was before you pointed out the woodwork. In fact, while I am a big fan of Any Color Other than Yellow (also of Any Color Other than Green), I can see a gold or caramel working very nicely with your trim.

Gold and caramel are the two colors I zeroed in on. I started with gold, and unfortunately, I'm not loving it. I like the intensity but the yellow is just wrong, I think. And I'm not liking the idea of perpetuating this color throughout the house. I wish I had tried caramel first. My partner is not going to be happy to hear this! :)

B_H, be careful with the gold and the caramel. I recently went to a new hair salon, and all the walls were painted a peanut-butter gold, with dark brown trim~~it made me hungry! I couldn't help but comment how it looked like I was on the inside of a pumpkin pie with a graham cracker crust. ;o)

Ha ha patty_cakes! I know exactly what you mean -- I have been in a room where the paint color looked so much like dessert that I just wanted to lick the wall! :)
