paint colors, separate but open rooms, 'flow', 'continuity'

I have a small house with living room, dining, and front hall (with stairs going up and small hall upstairs) that are all distinct rooms but they are very open to each other due to wide openings. I've had them all the same color, but it's time to choose a better color (or colors).

I just painted the living room. I want to change the dining room too, at least. I'm wondering what opinions are of painting these kinds of spaces different colors, or keeping it all the same for continuity. Keep in mind that in this case each room is pretty small.

Here is a pic to help envision. (Everything is a mess. We're waiting to see the living room paint in daylight to know if we need to put a second coat on, so stuff is everywhere.)
