Have you ever used Mozilla Fire Fox? There is a free add on called Adblock that will block the ads out.

Yep- Firefox + AdBlock! No ads anywhere on any site.

My DD has told me to switch to Firefox from Internet explorer awhile back because of my complaints to her about the looong load time for pages, etc, etc and finally I did it and it did improve the load time a lot. However, until today when reading this, I had not realized there was the free adblock add on! I had only blocked popups before, but now--Wow, that it so sweet to see the whole webpage without ads! I just added it, and the change is wonderful! Thank you!!

I am sick and tired of going to a website and then seeing an ad for that site pop-up on the next thing I am on. For instance, i was buying shirts for my son on Jos A Banks a little while ago, and then came to this thread. Guess what was waiting for me on the right side of the page? UGH!

What other changes will I see if I switch to Firefox. Kind of like IE. Will I still be able to get Hotmail?

NHB--the others who are more computer savvy may be able to give more pointers, but I even forget that I've changed to Firefox because to me it looks so similar to IE (other than the ads not appearing now).

Yes, you can still get hotmail--I use that also. I've never used just hotmail to store my mail though, so I use Windows Live to actually receive it on my computer though that's not necessary--just my preference since I have Windows 7 operating system.

After installing Firefox, you just would likely want to select your home page (as you do with IE) and personalize the toolbar so it has the menu items you use most (as you do with IE, also). I love the faster page loading time and now--this adblocking is absolutely great!

If you download Mozilla Firefox and don't like it, you can always uninstall. I downloaded it, tried it first, then after seeing it worked fine for accessing the internet, I quit using IE altogether.

Thank you, sujafr. I have a new computer working Windows 7. I have not been terribly happy with it. Seems I get more ads than ever, and I have Google pop-up blocker.

Does Google still work with Firefox? There are tools that I like using from them. I also have a Comcast email account where I have used Outlook in the past, and am just going into Comcast to get my email because I was not crazy for the new Outlook or Windows Live. I'd like to change that though. I miss my "You have mail" alert. My Hotmail account is for junk, ordering, etc..

So, I can install Firefox without first deleting IE? That's good to know.

newhomebuilder... hotmail, google and any other website is accessible through any browser, whether it's IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc.

Web Browsers like Window IE or Mozilla Firefox are completely different programs and work completely independent of each other. So you don't have to uninstall anything to use one or the other. I often toggle between the two or have windows of both open on my desktop at the same time.

When the internet was first introduced, Windows IE was the only browser people knew about and it had the market all to itself. For years, programmers used IE as the standard and didn't feel the need to write script for a second platform. That's why when Mozilla was first introduced a lot of the sites didn't work on it. As demand for Mozilla grew that changed though and now it's more common than not that a webpage or search engine will work on several platforms.

newhome, all of those things work easily as well, if not better, in Firefox than in IE.

You might also try using Thunderbird, which is like Mozilla's free version of Outlook, except it works better, doesn't garble html emails, etc. Thunderbird can be set up to fetch your Comcast email. Use the exact same settings you were using in Outlook.

Unlike IE, you can have as many other browsers as you want running on your system (even open, even different versions) at the same time. If you don't like Firefox, try Google Chrome, also free. There are ton of others, but those are the biggies, and most recommended.

Hooray! That slinking green ribbon and red box are gone!!! The other ads are still there but that was the only one that had the glitch and freezing up my computer. All the others are fine. On my computer you have to eliminate each one individually so I zapped that sucker and one other but the others aren't bothering me. I'm so happy that is gone!!! Thank you Irish and everyone else! You can fix anything on GW and are the best!!!
