I only remember that, growing up, mom put copper tiles on the backsplash behind the cooktop and it looked lousy after a couple of years....it was stained and blotchy despite supposedly being protected with something. Of course that was 50 years ago, so who knows what would happen now with the products they use, but at the time, I was very unimpressed.

You do know you can get paintable wallpaper in a pressed tin design? That might give you more options for a non-shiny finish and be easier to remove if you get tired of it.

I gave up on the individual tile. I considered the paintable wallpaper, but more for the half kitchen in the basement. I want the tin tile that appears to be old and worn. I was thinking the 24x24 that has a 6x6, or smaller, tile design, but I'm concerned about the finished edges. Just window shopping the internet for now.

I have a tin ceiling in my house and tin does oxidize so it needs a protective coat to prevent it from deterioration. I think all unfinished new tin might be shiny but maybe a matte finish poly on it or maybe a whitewash technique might look nice while offering protection. American tin offers powdercoated options that look lovely on their website and I think they say you cut it with a guillotine papercutter or tin snips with gloves. Not sure about rough edges my ceiling has a molding around the edges so if there are some they are covered.

I have a tin backsplash, but it may not be what you're looking for, since we painted it rather than having the shiny metal.

@ roarah, are the joints smooth enough that they wouldn't be obvious as a backsplash? I have samples of white for a ceiling, from American Tin, but not of the aged tiles.

Does your counter have a pattern? I would be concerned about adding a pressed tin backsplash to a patterned granite. It could be too busy.

I was in home depot the other day, and they have pressed tin panels in a variety of finishes. There was a coppery one, a darker oxidized one, and a bright tin. Can't remember for sure- they may have had a painted, distressed looking one. You might find something there.

I like pressed tin, especially the real antique tin with the patina of years. However, I've always wondered how on earth one would clean it with the irregular surface on a backsplash. Is is necessary to use spray cleaner and a brush to scrub it? I'm neither overly OCD or a sloppy cook but I know stuff gets splashed no matter how careful one is. I expect if it was sealed well with a clear finish it would be best.

Another concern for me would be (as previously mentioned) that they have a busy pattern and would look best with a plain countertop. Or one could use a plain tile and paint with only light antiquing.

I bought some repro tin tiles to use on a room divider screen. They are a lot less expensive than the vintage/antique ones.

luckygal - To me, it doesn't seem any more irregular than tiles and grout. I wipe it down with a sponge.

I have the pressed tin look embossed paper backsplash, installed maybe 5 years ago with a finish applied that the manufacturer of the paper recommended..no longer remember what. It has yellowed slightly, but I still *love* it!!

Okay, bear (bare?) with me since this will sound really off the wall. I took an Annie Sloan chalk paint class. One of the techniques taught was painting a "tin" ceiling panel. It was actually the plastic ones sold at HD and Lowes. A coat of Duck Egg blue,some distressing and a dark wax finish and it looked like aged copper! I kid you not. I know it sounds tacky, but I was amazed at the final look.

I'm going to use this technique to fit some of the panels in the recessed areas on the side of a hutch and on the inside back of the top part of the hutch. Of course no pics yet since I'm just in the process of painting the rest of the hutch off white.
