I was going to suggest no more than $10/chair so ogoopogo sounds about right. They do need a lot of work--which you have to factor into your final cost. I do think you can get them for less (say $25) as people are really not thinking of taking on a patio project at this time of year.

Those are awesome. I have my guy here that would sandblast them and undercoat w/ rust proof and then you could spray paint them. I have done so many of these projects now that I feel like a pro. He welds also and has done great repairs. They will be TRULY beautiful when they are done. I used French Lavender spray paint on my glider and a clear sealer and it turned out great. You are a lucky gal. c

I called all of the auto body shops 1st. They don't do this anymore at most body shops since cars are no longer made of that kind of metal ...duh note to myself LOL.

I then looked under welding shop. I found my welder just up the street. He does do sandblasting and so does his best friend. They have to use it on iron railings...you know the ornamental trim on buildings/fences etc.

The caution with sandblasting is that it uses a very powdery silica that is EXTREMELY dangerous. You have to have lots of very expensive equipment to use it. A whole suit + breathing set up. You CANNOT do this yourself. I paid $150 for my glider to be done. He picked it up at my house and blasted it and coated it and delivered it back. The glider was free. So I have an approx. $500-800 glider for $150.

Check with the welders in the yellow pages and the auto body shops and ask who they know . Everyone was really nice when I was making my calls. GOOD LUCK ! c

We do that too Trailrunner. My hubby is in machining/fabrication/design. He has a smaller sandblaster (actually a glassbead one) but we have someone near us who has a sandblasting service. He did my old glider and chairs, also a wrought iron table and chairs that belonged to my grandparents years ago.

One tip that we have done is to use auto paint on these outside pieces. Works like a charm.

Holy Guacamole!! Maybe I ought to tell Mom to will her diamonds to someone else and I'll take her wrought iron suite of settee, chairs & 2 tables! haha. She's had her set since the early 60's, not quite as ornate as those you show Trail, but close!

I'm pretty sure the seller won't take my offer (started at $35) because the more I thought about it, the more I think she wants close to 10 times that. But I could be surprised. She'd e'd me earlier today to say she'd be in town, but I didn't get her e till tonight. I won't be down her way till mid January, so I'm thinking this might not pan out.

pesky, I am no expert but when those chairs are restored...and we are talking about 50.00 a chair max to do it , they appear to be the real deal and will be worth a lot lot more. Of course you want them for you so who cares what they are worth. I would go ahead and see them and keep in touch with her....can't hurt and maybe you will get a very nice surprise. Go ahead also and get some leads as to folks to sandblast and coat them. You can spray them your self with the final paint and clearcoat...wish I was out there...I would snap them up in a minute. good luck ! C

I love those chairs. I would love to find something like that for myself. They will require a good bit of work so I think you should start low on your offer and see how it goes. good luck, I hope you get them!

Oh my gosh...you'll never believe this...she emailed me and said if I promised to love them and refurbish them and not take them to a scrap heap, she'd let me have them for $25!! AND she's delivering them to me tomorrow or Saturday.

I'll give you all an update when we've exchanged funds.

They way I "read" her ad was that she really wanted rid of them and not naming a price meant she was hoping someone would offer big bucks for them, but would take "just about" anything to be rid of them. As cool as they are she didn't want to take the time or spend the money to fix them up and they were just junking up her place. You were probably the only one that responded. The only one that saw the beauty in them. I'm thrilled for you pesky1!

Oh these chairs exceeded my expectations. I picked them up on my lunch break and as I was bringing them into the garage tonight, I kept squealing with delight. Honestly, as is, they'd sell at an antique mall for over $100 each. I am torn between having them sandblasted and powder coated or leaving them all chippy. The original paint is intact, and the little knobs on the feet are still there, too.

I'll make new seats, and try to find some outdoor fabric for seats and if I paint them, I'll also paint my patio table and use the chairs with it. DH hasn't seen them yet, but he'll be tickled.

The seller said she found them on some property she just bought, they'd been out in the yard for a couple years apparently. She said her DH was just going to scrap them, and she was thrilled I loved them and made me promise I'd send her a pic when I finished them.

I'll work on them this winter, and I'll definitely keep pix posted.

Second (or 3rd) the suggestion getting sandblasting done if you want to paint, and do shop around. I had a very large milk can I bought at a garage sale for $3. It was pretty rusty and I didn't want to tackle it. I called around and got a wide variety of quotes, one specialty 'high tech' shop wanted over $200. (I realize they have to pay for the equipment, tho.) Old timer here in town who just does general body work only wanted $10. On the phone he said 'yup, just did one of those for my wife'. He did an outstanding job! It looked like it just came out of the dairy, all shiny and smooth. (I didn't think to ask him to do anymore, I used rustoleum primer and paint myself. If it were outside furniture, the auto paint is an excellent idea!)

Pesky, congrats on your CL score! I'd love to see a pix, too. If you decide not to sandblast them, you will still need to get rid of any rust and apply rustoleum. Sandblasting sounds a heck of a lot easier if you can find someone who is affordable.
