CL carved marble table. should I buy it?

I need to stay the heck off CL BUT I saw this table late last night and love it.

I emailed the seller but havne't heard back yet. I questioned the top color. Couldn't tell if was pink/rose tone or brown marble. I'm hoping not pink.

They want $40.00 dimensions are 30W, 16D, 30H

First question, should I get it or just leave it. I have a coworker who lives in that area that would pick it up for me. I am running out of room for furniture. I would have to eliminate something in my LR. Possibly the spindle table.

The new table would fit on the short wall and the chair could move where the spindle table is?

I have an area when you walk into the sidedoor that leads into the kitchen that it would work. It would be under the phone. Problem with that is my kitchen cabinets are light oak. My DR that is attached to my kitchen is dark wood but no room over there.

Second question, if I do go to buy it should I try and knock the price down? I'm one of those people that always just pay whatever is asked. I've read on here so much that most people put the price high expecting it to be brought down some.

For $40? I'd be *all* over that table! Pink top or not (easily covered or changed).

I'd replace the spindle table with it.

I had to look a second time before I saw it has a flat back! 30"W and 30" H..........that's a good buy!

I wouldn't stick it in the corner but would put it in the spindle table's place.

If you hear back from the seller, ask if they're flexible on the price. I like getting that out of the way before I show up. I wouldn't worry if they're not.........that's a great price.

My vote is the third option. I think mixing the painted with the wood will add more interest to your room and the legs of the stool match the sides of the chair backs. While I agree, it doesn't hurt to bargin, on CL it can always be a real gamble if it's something you really want and it's priced fairly well. I've lost out on stuff before because I tried to bargin over email, when I was really willing to pay full price if I had to. I think pricing on CL can be very subjective and regional as the merchandise can also vary quite a bit. So whatever you do, don't make an offer before you get there. What I've taken to doing when I need to sell something and a part is damaged, is to offer the damaged item for free along with existing sale. So, if I were selling those chairs I might word it like $50/chair for the ones in good condition, with the two damaged ones thrown in for free with a full price offer. I guess I am not one to bargin down to the very last dollar, but think more in terms of what an item is worth and what is a fair value. If I don't want to pay more than 75% of purchase price, I just don't reply to ad. If you liked them, I could see making an offer of $150 and settling somewhere in the middle, but not much lower, esp. if there is already another interested party and by waiting until Sunday, there is opportunity for many other replies to come in between now and then. I'm just curious how to someone would go about bargining it down to $120. Do you just state that is bottom price or make initial offer even lower than that? What to do then if seller refuses? My experience is that 9 times out of 10 a seller will either say no or make a counter offer.

Great table, and Canadel is a good brand. Are you going to try and refinish it yourself or have it done? You want to be sure that the finish on the top ends up looking the same as the pedestal. And, as Valinsv noted, it won't look anything like quartersawn oak, so you need to decide if that is a deal breaker for you. Are your chairs finished or are they going to be redone to match the color of the table? Are they quartersawn oak, and what style? Would you consider painting the chairs or slipcovering them for a different look? Will they have cushions or upholstered seats?

Dilly, thanks for the pictures to illustrate your points. The reasons I'm thinking about this set... - My table has no leaves and only seats 4 (look at leg configuration). I would love to be able to extend a table for making my GG windows, or cutting out sewing projects or seating several guests. - This set is oak, and so are my other pieces. - Among all my other real antiques I don't know if this might not just blend in, to the uneducated eye. (I'd know more after seeing it, I think.) - I know what beautiful antiques and quality furniture are and would *love* to have them. But on my tiny fixed retirement income ($730/month) I have to dip into savings to get anything and I need to be very careful about that. But if y'all think this will drag my room down, I guess I need to keep looking?

I was hoping to see a pic of the ottoman in your room because I was so curious how it would work; but I agree with you that it would've obstructed the inlay table which has become a secondary focal point given it's placement in front of the picture window. I think you and I and our DH's are very similar I can just laugh at it. DH thinks I've put too much furniture into my LR and would always cringe if I were to consider another piece. Now, I've moved on to the garden and just planted a bunch of annuals and strawberries in a bed and DH asks me a few days later, "Don't you think you planted them too close?" I do agree, good things come to those who wait. And sometimes you do need to just wait and live in a space to see what (if anything) you need to add. I particularly find that after a party I will know if I need something or need to rearrange a room. I ask myself: Does everyone have a place to sit comfortably? Was the arrangement conducive to conversation? Did everyone have a place to set their drinks? Could we all walk comfortably around the room? Did we have the right lighting for what we wanted to do? Then I also consider how we use the room on a daily basis and are we comfortable there. None of us here on this board know exactly how you use this room. There is always a balance between decor and comfort and while we can suggest items for the former, you and your DH are the best judges of the latter.

I think it's gorgeous. Would it work in your foyer, where you don't have to match other finishes? I'd be all over that thing!

Unfortunately, there's no room in my foyer. I have a large buffet that was my Grandmothers there.

Still haven't heard anything. It was listed yesterday in the mix of a TON of other listings. People are cleaning out and or trying to make some extra $.

More importantly, though, do you know you're being stalked by a glowing-eyed alien? I'd be v-e-r-y careful; "they're back" and they're watching you! LOL I love the kitty.

For $40? You could not get a cheapie table at Target or Walnart for that. You do have room for it on the wall and the other table can be put elsewhere.

It's a beautiful table at a great price. I agre to replace the spindle table with it. I think the price is more than fair for a piece of that quality. I would not try to bargain on this piece--just be lucky if I was the one that was able to snap it up before it's gone.

Still no email back. Ahhhh... starting to wonder if it's been sold already. People sometimes get annoyed when you write "Do you still have the such and such" Most people never remember to delete the listing. I'm going to send another email.

I wrote back Thanks and to keep me posted. Should I email again and mention I'd go a little higher? That's kind of crappy though for the other person. Not to mention I don't want to get into to a bidding battle or even a make believe bidding battle.

Sadly I doubt they'll leave it behind.

Coworker is going to check it out tonight and most likely pick it up.

He was just saying the other night,"What are you doing on CL again. We don't need anything else. Blah blah."

Glad to hear it! That really is an excellent price. There is a lot of variation in pricing on CL--you can usually tell when things are over priced or there is some wiggle room. But $40 is two $20 how easy is that? I know my DH is the same--even when I sell, he grumbles what a hassle it is--but I consider that my "mad money" and then don't feel guilty when I turn around and buy something else later. I sold three things on CL this past weekend and no one even made an offer--though I did give a combined deal of $25 off when one seller bought both a desk and bookcase I was selling.

Just got off the phone with the lady that picked it up. She's saying it's really and doesn't look cheap at all. Which is a good thing. I can't wait to see it tomorrow. DH still doesn't know but will get over it.

My LR is in the middle of being painted. I really like the color. I'll post pics of the new table and the LR hopefully in the next few days.

Here's that table! I really, really like it. DH didn't give me any grief about it either. He was like,"Oh ok. Yeah, it's nice..." He is a mystery at times.
