Should I buy these CL dining chairs?

I have been very challenged with my dining room (as you can tell from my various posts), and one of the things that I've been meaning to replace are our dining room chairs. They aren't the best quality chairs, a couple of them are broken, they are worn, and they don't all match. So, what do you think of these chairs from CL?

Btw, that table isn't our current table. We got a new one (long story). I don't have a picture of the table in the room, but it is this one:

I've been looking for a set of at least 8 chairs bc there are 6 in our family, and I'd like a couple of extra that match for when we have people over. These seats, although worn looking even look like they'd match my walls a bit. Thoughts? Thanks!

Those chairs look wonderful -- and will be VERY elegant with your new table! And yes -- the fabric does appear to work well with your wall color!

Go for it! But don't forget to tell them that you must try out the chairs for sturdiness first, of course!

I like them! I've been looking for chairs too and if those have strong joints, I'd get them.

My3dogs, a huge thank you for posting the link to Francis' website. Also, yayagal and patricia43, your enthusiastic responses have helped me to feel that I'm really "normal" in falling madly in love with these little works of art that are gorgeous replicas of South Pacific sailing history. The sailing vessel in my painting looks almost exactly like the Lapita Voyage Project canoe on Mr. Pimmel's website (scroll down lower on his page) with the following exception. I believe mine only has one sail. It was down, wrapped and laying on the deck at the time the artist captured the image of the canoe in the harbor so there is no sail in the painting. Pat43, yes I am including other historical artifacts in my decor. Thank you for asking. This summer while on Cape Cod, a handwoven Nantucket basket, a genuine scrimshaw, and a carved whale were purchased for display on the shelf system in the familyroom. The decor is British colonial but with a Hawaiian slant. My DH and I vacationed on Maui about five times, and I wanted to bring the relaxed feel of Hawaii to this remodel. I'll be happy to post photos when completed. The big problem is that I'm stripping the paint and varnish from the six unit shelf system that's in the familyroom. This has turned into a never ending project. If anyone has any magical suggestions, I'm all ears. To wrap this up, a big thank you for help with my decision; I'll go with the Pimmel canoe. Mine will only be 12" long. That's the size I wanted, and it's at the top of my price range at that. Also, your patience with my dithering about is much appreciated. Mahalo (Thank you!)

I agree with all of you: they're definitely Hollywood Regency. And I should recharacterize my own style, which is probably better said to be "*in* transition" rather than transitional. (: I do like clean-lined pieces, and our DR set is very Mission; the adjacent LR combines Mission and Art Deco; and our bedroom, where these chairs would go, is your basic Recovering Graduate Student/Random Wedding Present room. So funky/eclectic would fit in just fine there. And there's just something about these chairs... The room is a long rectangle. The half without windows is for the bed (not a bed per se, but rather mattresses on a metal frame) and the dressers, which are mismatched yard sale finds. On the other side of the room, I'd like to create a sitting/reading area next to the windows, with a gorgeous view of the mountains (by far the nicest thing about the room!). We got a red and tan handloomed Peruvian folk-art rug for our wedding, and that's what we'll use to set off the seating area. Also on that side of the room, framing one window, are some slender dark walnut modern-styled bookcases. And then the part I'd like to replace: a heinously ugly loveseat that a friend gave us, also on that side of the room. I'd much rather find some reading chairs and an ottoman than a loveseat anyway; the room's not that big, and the loveseat makes it a pain to open and close the curtains and shades. I agree these chairs don't look too comfortable, so they're probably not my ideal reading chairs. But they'd be good for draping the bathrobe or pulling into the LR for extra seating. I love the idea of velvet, and maybe even the box-pleated skirt -- hadn't thought of that, cool idea, thank you! I agree that they're great in a pattern, but I don't want lots of patterns clashing in my bedroom, I don't think. What would you think of a tan velvet on the back and the bottom of the seat, and then the top, round seat cushion in something like this: Here is a link that might be useful: I'd use this pillow cover to reupholster the seat...

I like it a lot! I have a 3 piece bookcase/drawer piece from Drexel's Chippendale collection I bought back in the 80s and it's still one of my favorite items. It has the same fretwork design your table has. BTW, it was very pricey and is not cherry, but mahogany. If yours is from the same era, it probably is, too, though I can't tell from the pic. It will look lovely in your home.

If you want the absolute MAXIMUM amount of money in the SOONEST amount of time: I think you should list and sell the pieces individually (4 ads: table, sideboard, chairs and china) but mention in each ad that you have the matched set available. Include links to each ad in your craigslist posting (ask for help on what the html would be if needed). Do offer a discount for purchasing more than one item. Remove all the items on, around or under each piece. Clean each item thoroughly and clean the area around each item so the photos are spotless. (You can stage a FEW items in the china cabinet for looks only. Do NOT use all items in there currently). Include exact and ALL measurements of each piece in your listing. Take the best pictures you can in the best light. Take FAR more pictures than the 4 CL lets you post (zoom out, top, bottom, details, front, back, etc....). State in your listing that you can email additional photos if requested. Include all known info about items before posting.

They look like they would go nicely with your new table.

But are the seats of the chairs done in a fabric or some type of vinyl? Looks sorta shiney in the picture. But they look like they would be easy to cover.

Thanks for the feedback! I haven't gotten a response to my e-mail inquiry about the chairs; so, we'll see. I like them, but I'm nervous about the chair decision bc it's such a visible part of the dining room. I asked the seller what the material is, but haven't gotten a response. I'm hoping that it's leather as opposed to vinyl, but may be that's wishful thinking.... I'll keep you posted and will post a photo if I do end up getting them. As always, thanks!

The chairs are very nice and if the price is right, any loose joints could be fixed. They will be appropriate for your new table. A linen of some other fabric would be better than vinyl or leather for the seats. You could change this yourself.

I really like the chairs. It is very difficult to find a set of 8 used chairs, esp. the armchairs. My vote is a definite yes, if this is a formal DR; but for daily use, I'd probably look for something a bit sturdier. Definitely check the arms as they look a bit delicate to me. I have some similar ones (antique), but very seldom use them. I place the 6 chairs around my table and the two armchairs are on either side of my buffet. If I used the armchairs daily, I think they would snap off at some point.

Another look that is popular and would increase your options when searching for chairs, is to get a set of two different host chairs (preferable upholstered) and then you only need find a set of 6 chairs, less the armchairs.

I would say it depends on the price, and sturdiness, and if the seat cushions come off for recovering. They would look great with your table and in your beautiful room. I would definitely go look at them.

The chairs are a good price (If I can ever get the seller to reply). I'm looking at a total of about $200 for all 8 chairs. Valinsv, I've thought about the upholstered head chairs and 6 sidechairs. The problem is that if people offer 6 chairs, almost always, 2, or at least 1, of them are captains chairs. I wouldn't want 2 head chairs and 5 side chairs and a captains chair. We actually do eat at this table every day. I figure for the price, even if the chairs break, it wouldn't be a big deal. Yes, I would definitely want to see if the seats come off. Right now, though, the idea of leather seats is appealing bc with 4 messy boys, there isn't a meal where each of them doesn't drop something on their seats. Javachik, I'll let you know in a couple of years! Although I don't love the chairs and they are damaged, I'm going to keep them around for possible use in our basement when we finish it in the next 5-10 years!

i really like them too. if they're sturdy enough i'd totally go for it. congratualtions, they'll be a great addition to your room.
