Paint color for nursery

I bought this crib set for our unborn child (sex not yet determined) and will be starting to paint in about a month, so I need some ideas!

I love the wall color shown in this picture but I kinda think it's too much with the busy print. Should I rather go for a light blue or mocha? I think I'd like to keep it fairly gender-neutral even though we're finding out next week whether it's boy or girl... I usually go for a simple contemporary look, nothing too clutter-y or busy.

Thanks Christy! I kinda like that idea too... leave the color in the bedding and a few accents maybe...

thank you everyone. We have no idea if our new addition will be a boy or a girl. I am secretly crossing my fingers for a boy, though, since I have two girls already :) I am not afraid of color... I definately do not like white walls! LOL! As I said, most of our living area is behr prominade. I absolutely love this color. Our kitchen is a milk chocolate color (forgot the name) and it works because our cabinets are all white. The computer/play room is glidden honey beige. Our bedroom is orange and our daughters room is behr midsummer night dream (another color I really love). So while our colors are all over the place, they all seem to work together because they have the same level of intensity. So far nothing in this last room really works with the rest of the house. The honey beige is not a bad color, it is just not as warm/creamy as I expected. It is definately more of a yellow. I think I might need to prime in there before I continue looking at color samples against the wall.

Congratulations on your upcoming arrival! Gray is a great neutral for a nursery and is a color that will grow with your baby. A couple of good ones to look at are Revere Pewter, Edgecomb Gray, Cape Hatteras Sand and Barren Plain - these Benjamin Moore colors run the gamut in the "greige" area and will offset your white furniture without being too dark. I believe in the bold, contrasting color for stimulating the babies eyes and brain activity.... I used a bold Disney Towel to place on the ceiling above the crib. It was a bold Mickey Mouse on a huge beach towel with red and black as background color on towel. When my son laid in crib the contrasting colors of towel kept him busy. He's now 22 years old. Been a straight A student thru high school and is a junior at University of Cincinnati majoring in engineering. Just adding lil more info.

Well, I'm a girl and once I was old enough to state my preferences, I demanded a blue bedroom with no pink. My sister wanted green. Being gender neutral doesn't mean you need to be color neutral. I'd pick a real color - one with some fun to it - yellow, blue , green, - and go from there. And I personally think that rug would suit a library better than a nursery.

I would do 3 walls in the light brown (cappucino) color, then one accent wall in the light blue.

Inspiration pic might be on the right track, but perhaps the mistake was pulling a color from the textile. A color like BenM's Ansonia Peach might be a better solution -- it's not a literal pull from the bedding, but it works none the less. With that said, it only really works if you like it and the idea of a soft pumpkin wall color fits your idea of what your new lil pumpkin's room should look like.

I love the Ansonia Peach! I find the original too strong, the cream boring, and the blue cold.

I love the peach and think it is very gender neutral. I am also decorating our first nursery and came to this realization: you can't really use most of a bedding set, so there is not going to be as much color as you think - just from the crib skirt really. Bumpers are no longer recommended for use due to SIDS, and neither is the quilt, unless you toss it over a chair or something. So a bold wall color can't really hurt :-)

The furniture is mostly black as well... so it feels like a softer color would be better. Thanks for all the ideas, I think I'll check out that Ansonia Peach.

Great mockups! What program did you use, Funcolors? I just bought a new computer with PhotoShop installed, but have no idea how to use it :-( I must start playing with it.

Pretty bedding! I really like the blue and peach wall colors. One way to display the quilt is to use a quilt rack.

When my DD was a baby, I (painstakingly for me) made her bedding, including a patchwork duvet cover for her crib. Since she couldn't use it for the first year, I displayed it on a Pottery Barn quilt rack right next to the crib, over her antique drysink changing table. It's still there and she's 6 years old - can't bear to take it down yet and it works with her big girl bedding (which I made out of the same blue floral fabric).

juddgirl, that is precious. There's a thread on conversations about birthday parties for little ones -- and it started me just a'missing the heck out of the days when my little guys were actually little! My youngest just hit the big 1 - 0. And my oldest just got a physical for winter sports and he's coming in at 5' 10, 190 lbs and the new shoes we bought are a men's size 14. He's a moose.

Point being, I totally relate to not wanting to take down the quilt! I'd hold on to displaying it for as long as you can get away with it!!! Those days go fast and you can't get 'em back. (now I need a tissue)

Anyhoo, I paint virtually with Photoshop for the most part and pretty much do exteriors exclusively. Every now and then an interior room gets in the mix.

funcolors - I can relate to them growing up so fast. My oldest is 24 and my baby is 6 - going on 40! I'm sure she'll want a rock star room someday soon, but until then I get to satisfy my English country cravings that don't work in my generally rustic house :-)

Seriously, you have impressed me with your Photoshop skills and have inspired me to look into a tutorial so I can start using it for the many unfinished projects I have going on here!

Firstly, congratulations on your new little one's nearing arrival!

My first thought was to go with a neutral tan or cream color. SW Softer Tan is one thought. But I don't know if the colors on the bedding show true on my monitor, so I could be way off. Good luck and congrats again!

We believe in home decorating, you want to strive for balance. We are a fan of the blue as it tones down the vibrant and warm tones of the red and brings balance.

Although it is more expensive, we also recommend you use no or low VOC wall paint to help reduce the fumes.
